But the gig should have happened the previous month, except Paul McCartney went down with a throat infection once the band had arrived in the city.On the right is a ticket for the original concert. A very interesting clip that dates to November 12, 1963. On this day the Beatles were scheduled to perform at the Guildhall, Portsmouth, England. However, Paul was suffering from stomach flu and the concert had to be cancelled.

As you can see in this clip (filmed backstage at the Guildhall for the Southern Television show “Day By Day”), Paul gets more and more uneasy as the interview goes on. Towards the end of the interview John notices that there is somethng wrong with Paul and tries to make some kind of contact with him.

Remember when Paul in 1963 got sick with stomach flu, and John was worried with him, like us today

November 12, 1963

It was on this day that The Beatles gave an interview to Jeremy James for the Southern Television show, Day By Day. The interview took place backstage before a performance that would turn out to be cancelled due to Paul McCartney falling ill with the stomach flu. The show at Guildhall in Portsmouth would be postponed to December 3 of that year.

In the brief interview, which would be broadcast-ed at 6:05 that evening, Jeremy James asks the band not only about their music but also about their Royal Variety Show performance, which had taken place just the week before. The performance in which Lennon is most notably quoted saying:

“ For our last number I’d like to ask your help. Would the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewelry.”
