HERB WITCH APOTHECARY

I’ve been spending the last week assembling my very first herb witch starter kit!

My friend gave me this fantastic cubbyhole box and as soon as I saw it I knew what I’d be using it for.

This is my first attempt, so I don’t have everything I had my eye on yet, but it’s as complete as it’s going to be for the time being.

I have 54 herbs and resins in my kit, some that I purchased and others that I pilfered from my parents spice cabinet, or my own.

- Blessed Thistle         - St. John’s Wort         -Vervain

- Mugwort                   - White Horehound     - Juniper Berries

- Lady’s Mantle           - Motherwort               - Damiana

- Red Clover               - Calendula Petals      - Gardenia Fruits

- Agrimony                  - Mullien Leaves         - Licorice Root

- Honeysuckle             - Nettle Leaf               - Dandelion Leaf

- Ground Ivy                - Buckwheat Herb      - Jamaican Dogwood

- Lavender                  - Chamomile               - Hibiscus

- Neem Powder          - Rose Petals              - Pink Himalayan Salt

- Jasmine Flowers      - Linseed                    - Fennel

- Black Salt                 - Paprika                     - Chilli Flakes

- Safflower                  - Cardamon                - Tumeric

-Cinnamon Sticks       - Thyme                      - Oregano

- Rosemary                - Parsley                     - Basil

- Mulukhiya                - Chives                      - Nutmeg

- Ground Cumin         - Ground Ginger         - Cayenne Pepper

-Ground Chia             - Dammar Resin         - Amber Resin

- Vatican Mix              - 4-Star Resin             - Frankincense

You can probably tell which ones came from my kitchen and which ones I bought. I’m having a lot of fun reading up on elixirs, spells and teas you can make with these herbs as well as planning out my herb grimoire. If anyone has any tips for a baby herb witch send them my way please, I have so much to learn!

Fairy Spice Cakes

These delicious cakes are best left in the garden for the Elemental Folk on nights such as Samhain or Lammas.

½ cup sweet Muscat wine
2 tablespoons fine brown sugar
1 large egg
⅔ cup flour
½ teaspoon poppy seeds
⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
⅛ teaspoon salt
Sunflower oil for frying

Mix the egg and the Muscat wine in a bowl. In a smaller bowl, mix together the flour, poppy seeds, cinnamon, sugar and salt. Stir this into the egg mixture. Let it stand for about ½ hour. Combine the nutmeg and honey in a small bowl. Heat some oil in a frying pan (about ½ inch in the bottom) until it’s hot. Drop the batter into the oil one generous spoonful each time and fry until golden. Place on paper towels to drain and then dip into the honey mix. Delicious!

Roasted Sweet Potatoes

There are one million and one ways to make roasted sweet potatoes. They are one of the most versatile vegetables and can be dressed up in many ways ranging from savory to sweet. Here is just one way that I like to prepare these for meal prep.

Ingredients

2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced

Seasoning blend: 1 tsp kosher salt, 1 tsp black pepper, ½ tbsp lemon granules, 1 tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp freshly ground nutmeg, 1 tsp ancho chili powder, 1 ½ tsp Herbs de Provence, ½ tsp smoked paprika.

Olive oil

Directions

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

On a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, arrange your sweet potatoes into a single layer.

Drizzle a layer of olive oil over the potatoes and then sprinkle over the seasoning blend (you may or may not use all of it – if you don’t, save the rest from chicken, it’s incredible).

Using your hands, toss the potatoes so that they are evenly coated.

Roast in the oven until the insides are tender when pierced with a toothpick.

NOTE: For meal prep, I tend to “under roast” my potatoes because I do not want them to become too soft after reheating for a meal.

Divide into meal prep containers after the potatoes have cooled.

Enjoy!

Also, think olden times; farm land; middle of winter; no civilization for miles; you are snowed in; all you have is grains and spices in storage. What is mama gonna do? Lovely little factoid on this meal origin.
For new followers: Short story, I inherited my great grandmothers cookbook when my mother passed. See food link or tag. I tend to post some of her recipes, modified for Health benefits obviously. Feel free to use the original ingredients like whole milk and real brown sugar (which is nothing more than grained sugar and pure molasses)

Foodie Friday: Vanilla Dutch Babies

Servings: About 8

Ingredients:
-3 tbsp butter
-3 eggs
-¾ cup all-purpose flour
-¾ cup warm milk
-1 tbsp sugar
-2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
-pinch salt
-pinch fresh ground nutmeg
-pinch cinnamon
-confectioners’ sugar for dusting
-toppings

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees (Fahrenheit)

2. Put butter in a large ovenproof, non-stick saute pan and place in the oven.

3. Meanwhile, combine the eggs and milk until the mixture is light yellow and no longer stringy, then gradually whisk in the flour, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt until you have a smooth batter.

4. Carefully remove the hot pan from the oven. The butter should be completely melted. Swirl it around to coat the inside of the pan completely (in the picture above, you can see that my pancake has a slight tear on the right side… this would have been prevented had I ensured that the pan was completely coated), then pour the remaining butter into the batter and whisk to blend. Pour the batter into the hot pan and return the pan to the oven. Bake until the pancake is puffed in the center and golden brown along the edges, 20-25 minutes.

5. Using a spatula, remove the entire Dutch baby from the pan and place on a cooling rack for a few minutes (this will allow the pancake to cool while still allowing steam to escape, preventing sogginess).

6. Dust with confectioners’ sugar and add toppings (fresh fruit, preserves, honey, syrup, whipped cream… the possibilities are endless) and slice into wedges to serve!

Magical Ingredient!

From ice cream to cookies to chocolate and scented candles, it’s difficult to imagine life without the presence of vanilla. It is without a doubt, everywhere in our lives, and it has become one of those ingredients that we sort of take for granted. But it may be surprising to note that at one point, vanilla was so difficult and expensive to obtain that the primary flavorings of choice in the western world were nutmeg and rose water.

Vanilla extract (when pure) is the flavoring pulled from the vanilla bean, a fruit of the orchid of the same name, which is native to Central and South America. One of the ingredients introduced as a result of the Columbian Exchange, it was greatly popular with the wealthy and nobility, though virtually inaccessible to those of lower station due to the difficulty in cultivating it outside of the Americas. This problem would be solved in the mid-19th century when it was discovered that the plant could be hand-pollinated in the absence of the symbiotic bee species of the native plant.

Today, vanilla is still cultivated by hand and is the second most expensive spice on the market (saffron being the most expensive) due to the intense labor and import costs (the majority of today’s vanilla being cultivated in Madagascar).

The uses of vanilla even after being introduced to Europe by Hernan Cortez were not limited to cuisine. The oils of the pods could be used as an aphrodisiac, dabbed behind the ear to encourage attracting a lover.

As a magical ingredient, we’d have to look at the Totonac legend regarding its creation. According to the legend, the Princess Xanat was prevented by her father from marrying a mortal man. But love ultimately won out and she fled into the forests with her lover. Both she and her lover were then hunted and beheaded, and where their blood mingled on the ground, the first vanilla orchid sprouted. Though rather depressing in its beauty, it gives natural vanilla an interesting place in magical use.

In general, vanilla (from here on out, I’ll simply be saying “vanilla” as opposed to “natural vanilla” because it’s clearly what I’m focused on… I’ll get to talking about artificial vanilla in a bit) is considered to be an excellent ingredient for love, lust, healing, and luck spells. The scent helps to calm the senses and open one up to romantic suggestion, while also serving to heighten libido both in men and women. In healing, the scent and flavor tends to promote calm and relaxation (there’s a reason why it’s the main flavor of many comfort foods), and on top of that, the oils were once believed to help treat stomach ailments.

Because the vanilla pods were used in tributes to the Aztecs after the Totonacs were invaded, the spice has come to also be associated with luck and money, and is often uses in sachets and food spells that encourage both in one’s life.

But say we take it a little bit further. Keep in mind that at this point, I’m focusing on some of the ways I use it in my practice, as vanilla is easily unique from witch to witch in its usefulness. In addition to love and healing, I also associate vanilla with cleansing and beauty. The calming properties of vanilla are excellent in helping to reach the state of mind needed to help dispel negativity, and the plant itself is rather beautiful (though I may be biased due to my love of orchids). Vanilla cosmetics therefore are excellent for glamour spells!

The majority of products today that are labelled as “vanilla” are artificially flavored, using a chemical called vanillin, and at this point, the witchy community is often a bit divided. Many, including authors such as Scott Cunningham, consider the artificial extract to be magically inert and encouraged acquiring natural extract and pods. On my end, however, I see it as a more or less decent substitute for the frugal, thrifty, or budget-oriented witch. This is because of the flavor and scent associations. They help trigger the memories, emotions, and mental states that we associate with vanilla, and therefore serve much the same purpose as the natural thing. So if you’re reading this article thinking “how the hell am I supposed to afford that,” know that you’re not required to buy natural vanilla.

That said, those who have access to the natural thing have much more versatility in how it can be used. Place the seeds or the pods in sachets, jars, bottles, and bags; use vanilla oils and extract for offerings, consecrations, candle dressing, or as an aphrodisiac; bake or cook to your heart’s content, taking advantage of the flavor, properties, and even vanilla’s ability to enhance and lift other flavors!

So when looking at that vanilla Dutch baby during breakfast, consider how amazing vanilla truly is before taking that first bite!

May all your meals be blessed!
Blessed Be! )O(

Base Protein Pancakes + Meal Prepping Tips

Servings: 1 jar

Dietary: Vegetarian, adjustable to Gluten-Free, High Protein

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup quick oats (use gluten-free oats to make this a gluten-free recipe!)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Sweetener of choice, to taste (I use about ¼ tsp stevia)
  • 1/3 cup cottage cheese (I prefer to use 2%)
  • 1/3 cup egg whites
  • Flavouring of choice: my go-to is ½ tsp cinnamon + ¼ tsp vanilla extract. If you’re adding cocoa powder, it will really thicken up the batter so have some sparkling water/club soda on hand to thin it out*
  • 1 tbsp nut butter of choice
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt (or yogurt of choice - skyr is a personal favourite of mine)
  • ½ cup fruit (I typically use frozen mixed berries, but just about anything works!)

*I use sparkling water in pancakes instead of flat for extra fluffiness, but flat water will work just fine to thin out the batter!

Directions:

  1. In a blender, Magic Bullet, or food processor, add oats, baking powder, sweetener, cottage cheese, egg whites, and flavouring. Blend until smooth (you can leave some oat chunks if you prefer this, but be aware that it will affect the consistency of your batter).
  2. On a non-stick or greased skillet, pour about 1/8 cup of the batter and cook until browned. Flip and brown the other side. Set pancake aside, and repeat with remaining batter.
  3. Line the inside of a jar or tupperware container with nut butter. Add a pancake to the jar/container, top it with some of the yogurt and fruit, then add another pancake. Continue until you’ve used up all your pancakes, yogurt, and fruit.
  4. Tighten the lid to your jar/container, stick in the fridge, and get excited for a delicious, pre-made, on-the-go breakfast in the morning!

Flavour Combos:

  • Vanilla Cinnamon - ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp vanilla
  • Green Tea - 1 tsp matcha powder, ¼ tsp vanilla
  • Dark Chocolate - 1 tbsp cocoa powder + 1 tbsp mini chocolate chips to top while cooking
  • Vanilla Latte - 1 tsp espresso powder, ¼ tsp vanilla
  • Christmas Cookie - ¼ tsp ground ginger, ¼ tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Mocha - ½ tbsp cocoa powder, ½ tsp espresso powder

Meal Prep Tips:

  • I typically multiply the recipe by 6 if I’m meal prepping - be careful with this much of baking powder, the batter will gain a lot of volume so ensure you have a lot of space in your blender.
  • While the pancakes are cooking, I line my jars and containers with nut butter
  • As you make the pancakes, add one to each jar before adding the second
  • This is a really easy meal to assemble while the pancakes are cooking, and the clean-up isn’t bad, so if you’re making enough for the week it should take about an hour total
  • Store in the fridge! (duh)

Challah French Toast

Challah bread is the most perfect bread in all of existence. It was birthed to become french toast.

Ingredients (for 6 large slices)

1 loaf of challah bread, preferably 1-2 days old, sliced into 6-8 thick slices

5 eggs

1 cup almond milk (or whole milk)

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ tsp kosher salt

1 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp ground nutmeg

¼ tsp ground cardamom

2 tbsp organic honey

Zest from ½ grapefruit

Butter for cooking, small amount of vegetable oil

Fresh fruit of your choice

Powdered/icing sugar for dusting

Maple syrup

Directions

Preheat your oven to a warm temperature, about 200-220 degrees Fahrenheit and place a baking sheet topped with a wire rack inside.

In a large, shallow dish, combine all of the ingredients to make the dipping custard.

Heat a pat of butter over medium heat in a non-stick pan along with ½-1 tbsp of oil (so the butter does not burn)

1-2 pieces at a time, dip the slices of challah bread into the custard and allow it to soak into the bread for about 30 seconds per side.

Let the excess custard drip from the bread before placing into the pan to cook.

Cook the french toast on each side for about 2 minutes or until golden brown.

Place the cooked pieces of toast into the oven while you cook the others.

Once all pieces are cooked, dust with powdered sugar and top with the fresh fruit or topping of your choice.

Garnish with fresh mint, drizzle with warm maple syrup and serve.

Enjoy!

Swamp Witch Honey Jar Spell to sweeten a friend who's done you wrong.

This spell was inspired because I had a big fight with a best friend and I wanted to talk it out but she wasn’t having it and so I did this so she’s come around and wanna make up, we’re back to being our usual selves so I think this worked well!

Ok things you’ll need

- a small jar

- honey (I used orange blossom honey for friendship)

- bay leaves

- ground cinnamon

- paper with their name, also a picture, something belonging to them any taglock that connects them to you really.

- ground nutmeg

- sea salt

- Florida water

- a red candle

Ok lets get started on this honey jar!

ok so first I’d recommend cleansing just because I always do before any spell work no matter how small but that’s just a personal thing.

First take your jar and put in some Florida water in the bottom, just a tad like enough to cover the bottom and imagine the water cleansing away all the nasty words you or they may have said.

Then take the sea salt and imagine all the pain it’s caused you dissolving within the bit of water.

Then take the name of your friend (or picture or whatever you’re using as a taglock) and place it in the jar, if you’re using a name on paper or a picture make sure you fold it 3 times toward you because you want the friendship you had to come back to you as healthy as before.

Next take some of the cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle it in the jar.

Place some crushed bay leaves inside as an offering to the jar for helping you.

Finally cover everything in honey, don’t be sparing the more honey the sweeter the feelings.

Close the jar with all the contents inside and hold the jar, telling it how much you want your friend back even if you’ve both said regrettable things and were mean, tell it how none of that matters to you now and how you’d love it’s help.

Now take the red candle and rub honey on it from top to bottom so you’re drawing everything back. Doesn’t have to be a lot just a drop or so.

Then put some honey on your tongue BUT DON’T SWALLOW THE HONEY NOW and ask the candle to bring your friend back to you and to make them feel the same way about you as they did before the fight that upset you both.

Next drip the wax on the jar top and seal the jar so that it cant open. Keep doing this until you think it’s enough, the jar shouldn’t be able to physically open after you seal it.

Then if you have a candle left after sealing let the candle burn out on top of the jar.

Leave this jar to sit somewhere either sunny or important to you where you won’t forget it, I have mine on my altar where there is a sunny spot

Sweet Dreams and Good Sleep Tea

I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately, and my dreams have been blurry or a bit unsettling so I experimented with some herbs and came up with this tea!

INGREDIENTS:
- one peppermint tea bag (to induce sleep. This is going to be the base of the tea)
- a couple of pinches of ground fennel (for increased memory and inducing dreams)
- a pinch of ground nutmeg (for inducing sleep also)
- a pinch of dried rosemary (for pleasant memories and warding off nightmares)
- (optional) a teaspoon of honey (for extra sweetness in sleep)

UPDATED Massive Spring Cleanout SALE/TRADE

I have a MASSIVE Sale/Exchange, mainly in credit to my Spring Cleaning Skills.

I also just want people out there in the community to know that I can get so many things that most seem to have a difficult time with <3

I’m here to help! I am also in a great deal of pain financially, so everything is for sale primarily. I will have a small list at the end of my Exchange Posts of the few things I am willing to trade for.

I have never traded on the Exchange, but I have a small online business and sell consignment in my town at 2 stores. I have a PayPal account that is linked to my Etsy for convenience <3

Happy to meet you all, and I hope you find what you are looking for!

Xoxo, Ginger
