Culture and Customs: The Grizzly Bear was a dance popularized by the Ziegfeld Follies in 1911. Danced by couples, the only step was to walk around in a lurching way the the beat of the music and yell out occasionally, “It’s a bear!” A good dancer would know lots of other fad animal dances of the time, including the Bunny Hop, the Monkey Slide, and the Kangaroo Dip.
