Racing for Keeps

“Still sure about this?” Q asked without looking away from the red starting light above the center of the race track.

“I’m not exactly getting cold feet,” Bond said, eyeing the way Q’s beautiful long fingers curled around the steering wheel.

“No takebacks,” Q continued as though he hadn’t heard him. “No ‘one more thing’s; if I beat your time, Q Branch keeps the car.”

Bond’s time had been good—hard to beat. But Q’s brain was in this car’s engines, his blood in the motor oil. Nothing was certain.

The red light turned yellow. Q’s fingers tightened on the wheel and his leg twitched above the accelerator.

“Now we’ll see how you handle a stick,” Bond said, just before the light turned green and the Aston leaped forward.

Whether Bond kept the car or not, he had already won one hell of a ride.

  • However as Amanda was only 15 at the time, her family told Charles she was his if he was willing to wait several more years
  • Four years later in 1980, Charles and Amanda had planned to join Lord Mountbatten on a tour of India which would give the pair time to get to know each other; However, a month before the trip was to take place, Lord Mountbatten was killed in an IRA bombing
  • When Charles returned from India, he proposed to Amanda
  • Amanda, who had lost two grandparents and her youngest brother in the bombing was now reluctant to join the royal family and turned down his proposal
  • Shortly after his relationship with Amanda ended, he started courting Lady Diana Spencer, the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend, Lady Sarah Spencer
  • Lady Diana was 18 years old at the time their relationship started while Charles was already 30
  • Because of the severe press attention that Diana had been receiving, Prince Philip told his son to either marry her or put her out of her misery and end the relationship
  • They had been dating less than a year when Charles proposed to Diana in February 1981; contrary to popular belief that Charles proposed at Windsor Castle, Diana later admitted that he proposed on a ski holiday

  • Charles and Diana’s marriage official ended in 1986 when both were seeing other people
  • Contrary to popular belief, Charles was never in an intimate relationship with Camilla Parker Bowels as the time of his marriage to Diana and it only ever became physical when it was clear that his marriage to Diana was over
  • Charles became incredibly depressed during this time and would spend endless hours working in the garden, even in the pouring rain
  • In fact, the Royal Protection Officers became so worried that Charles or Diana may try to kill themselves or even each other, they hid all firearms on the property
  • Charles and Diana finally announced their separation in 1992 following years of speculation
  • They were divorced in 1996
  • Just over one year later, Diana was killed in a Paris car crash
  • Charles was woken from his sleep by Diana’s brother-in-law who worked as a private secretary to the Queen to be told of the car crash and he later waited by the radio listening to the news; he found out that Diana had in fact been killed in the accident when he was listening to the radio
  • Diana’s brother-in-law, Alexander, later returned to the room to tell Charles the news only to find him crying having already heard (although the Palace was yet to confirm the news, the French priest who read Diana her Last Rites let it slip to the press)
  • Charles decided to wait until morning to tell his sons the news; he told William first who wanted to be there when he told Harry
  • Charles wore a blue suit to Diana’s funeral because it was her favorite color and she loved it on him
  • In 2005, Charles married Camilla Parker Bowels (nee Shand) who opted out of publicly using her title The Princess of Wales
  • A big fan of Polo, Charles played frequently as a young man and only quit after suffering a fall in 2001 which knocked him unconscious
  • Charles is also an incredibly talented painter
  • He is very interested in gardening and has done extensive work in the gardens at his country home, Highgrove
  • Charles is also greatly interested in the environment, he promotes recycling (even making the palaces green) and the Aston Martin given to him by his parents for his 21st birthday was even made to run on wine
