Prompt: Cas goes to heaven to ask Dean’s father for his hand in marriage.
Castiel manoeuvered through the junkyard as he looked upon Bobby Singer’s heaven. It was beautiful really, an amazing replica of Sioux Falls, only one where the air was just slightly purer, the birds singing slightly sweeter and the inhabitant of the run down cabin massively happier.
“Hello Bobby” Cue the choking sounds that usually took place when Castiel materialized near people. Humans. “JESUS CHRIST” Bobby heaved about, clutching the club that he somehow got his hands on. A life of hunter’s instincts couldn’t be unlearnt apparently. “No, it’s still me, Castiel.” That was fair, he looked absolutely nothing like Christ in this vessel atleast.
“But how - you’re not - are ya?” Fear was evident on his face. It made Castiel strangely happy. He had long grown attached to humanity, but this was what made them so beautiful. It was how much they cared, how much they loved. How much this man, who had lost so much at the hands of angels had it in him to care for Castiel.
“No. I am not dead" he confessed “If that is what you mean. I do have a purpose for visiting. I wished to ask for your blessing for when I ask Dean to marry me.“
“MARRY - That little idgit finally manned up and and asked you out, didn’t he? Of course ya have my permission Cas. Make my son happy.”
After a round of alcohol and being forced to consume those strange but beautiful fudge like objects called brownies by Ellen Harvelle, even after continuously insisting that angels didn’t lose weight, he went on his way, for he had one last destination in mind.
John Winchester was sitting on the porch of his home in Lawrence when Castiel showed up. “John Winchester?” He walked up to him. He could sense John tensing, his eyes masked pain, but Castiel could see the warrior behind them, he saw Dean.
“That’s me” he enunciated gruffly, still focused on the sunset, in the distance. “Now who the hell are you, and why are you here?”
“My name is Castiel, and I am an angel of the Lord.” That caught John off guard all right, but he refused to show it on his face. He turned around, to face Castiel. “Well? What do you want then?”
“I would like your permission for Dean’s hand in marriage”
“YOU WHAT -” John sputtered, trying his best to control his emotions but evidently failing. “Why the bloody hell would you do that? What are you like his guardian angel or something? You’re not even -”
“Human? Indeed I am not. I do not know about guardian angel, for I have grieved him often. Perhaps you could consider me to be one of sorts as I did raise him from perdition on heaven’s orders.”
Castiel knew the years in heaven had done John Winchester good. He had let go of his bitterness and anger until all remained was the father that Dean had idolized and Sam never had a chance to meet. “I’ve had some years to reflect on my life” John began gruffly, again reminding Cas of Dean, he spoke with the air of someone who’d rather do anything apart from talking about his feelings “I’ve had a couple of years, and I realized that I wasn’t the best father to Sam and Dean. If Dean accepts, I trust his judgement. But tell me this Castiel, do you love him?“
Castiel smiled easily, for thinking of Dean always made it easier for him to do so. “I love Dean. I loved Dean from the moment I saw his soul in hell. I loved him when he was lost, when I was lost. I loved him when he wasn’t himself and when he gave up on himself. I gave up on heaven for him, and I would do it again if I had to in a heartbeat.”
“He’s your Mary, isn’t he?” John’s eyes held pain and longing “Go, marry him. Make my son happy. And Castiel?” Cas looked up, pleasantly surprised for all that he had prepared to say to John, his acceptance had touched his heart and for that Cas would be forever grateful. “Tell my boys that I’m proud of them.”
