greatest olympians

Michael Phelps: swimmer, world record holder, greatest olympian of all time and instigator of hand holding on medal podia

The greatest British Olympian of all time, Sir Mo Farah, is banned from the US for 90 days because he has part Somali citizenship

“On 1 January this year, Her Majesty the Queen made me a knight of the Realm. On 27 January, President Donald Trump seems to have made me an alien.”
- Sir Mo Farah

Eighty years ago this month, the United States competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games in Nazi Germany, and 18 African-American athletes were part of the U.S. squad.

Track star Jesse Owens, one of the greatest Olympians of all time, won four gold medals. What the 17 other African-American Olympians did in Berlin, though, has largely been forgotten — and so too has their rough return home to racial segregation.

“Determination! That’s what it takes,” one of the athletes, John Woodruff, said during a 1996 oral history interview for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. “A lot of fire in the stomach!”

Woodruff won the gold medal in the 800-meter race — and he did it in Adolf Hitler’s Germany.

“There was very definitely a special feeling in winning the gold medal and being a black man,” Woodruff said. “We destroyed his master-race theory whenever we start winning those gold medals.”

arschmittyLast night featured @m_phelps00 winning his 23rd gold medal and 28th Olympic medal…surpassing HIMSELF as greatest Olympian of all time. Cannot express how proud I am especially after watching him overcome so much in the past few years and now being a father and soon to be husband to the lovely @nicole.m.johnson!!! You deserve every thing you’ve accomplished and I’m so excited to see you excel in your next chapter of life! Love you!!

Two other children of Zeus rose to take their place among the greatest of Olympians. These were the children of Leto, the beautiful daughter of the original Titans Coeus and Phoebe. Hera was tormented with jealousy of Leto. So the Queen of the Gods sent a serpent after Leto to vex her and to prevent her from finding a place to deliver her babies.

Leto frantically went from place to place, but found no welcome anywhere, since everyone feared incurring the wrath of Hera. She finally found refuge on Ortygia, the island of her sister Asteria, where she gave birth to Artemis.

Immediately after her own birth, the newborn Artemis precociously helped her mother through nine days of labor and delivery until her brother Apollo emerged. Themis, Leto’s aunt, took care of the young gods and nourished them on ambrosia and nectar—the food and drink of the gods.

Artemis and Apollo cherished their mother, who had gone through such an ordeal to bring them into the world. They defended her honor (or perhaps their own pride) when Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus, boasted of having more and better children than Leto. The two killed most (or all) of Niobe’s children, leaving Niobe to weep eternally.

Artemis and Apollo remained close to each other forever. Both siblings would become associated with the skill of archery, and they enjoyed hunting together. In addition, both had the power to send plagues upon mortals.

“Don’t you love the gods, s i s t e r?”
                      “More than I love you?

Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps went the exact same time.

4:02.67 during prelims in 400fr.  A senior girl in high school went the same speed as the greatest Olympian of all time.

right after he won he was like “come at me” and like acted that he was hot shit like

If I could serve my country in such an awesome way, I would be humbled, not an egotistical asshole.

Edit: I know he was being yelled at by another swimmer, and I know that he’s like the greatest Olympian of all time, or whatever. I just don’t like him. Sorry my personal opinion doesn’t match yours.

my brother is talking about how it's reasonable that the male swimmers had breakdowns when katie ledecky beat them in practice because "physiologically that shouldn't happen, there's a reason men and women don't compete and women shouldn't be able to beat men" can you come kick his ass for me

Katie Ledecky can kick his ass and she’ll do it after winning every race she’s entered in because she’s just that good
She’s not suddenly less talented just because some guys feel emasculated because ~a girl~ is better than them at Sports (even though the gender separation of sports is total BS there’s no real reason behind it because girls perform at the same physical level as boys when allowed)
Even Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian of all time, said in an interview that he’s glad Katie isn’t in his heats because he knows she’d beat him
Anyway I’ll fight anyone over Katie Ledecky and the rest of the women on #TeamUSA because they’re all incredible and they deserve respect

Michael is my favorite swimmer. Words can't explain how beautiful he is, and I'm so glad he's on the right track again and I'm so proud. Plus Boomer is so adorable. Nathan is my second fave. So nice and such a sweetheart, again words can't explain. 😭

I loved how emotional Michael was leading up to and during these Olympics. I feel like we finally saw the real Michael, somehow.

I do not believe he was actually addicted to alcohol and all that stuff. I believe he had a drinking problem in the sense that you shouldn’t do it so much when you’re in training and you definitely shouldn’t think you’re still okay to drive. That’s why he went to rehab - as in rehabilitation - and not an addiction clinic.(idk how it is reported in your country or where you are from, but here they sometimes just take what they read and don’t think about context or whatever.)

ANYWAY, he definitely seems on the right track as you say AND HE IS SO HAPPY WITH NICOLE AND BOOMER AND IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY TO SEE THAT.

and also, Dad™ Michael coming out these Olympics - and I don’t mean with Boomer but with the other swimmers
