A Jew and a Muslim walk into a wedding...

Last weekend my fiancé and I went to a friend’s wedding and we happened to be seated next to a very sweet elderly Jewish couple at the reception. He is a very well known attorney in the greater Detroit area and is the son of Jewish immigrants. She is a retired parol officer, and like me, comes from mixed cultural backgrounds. It was their first time at a Arab-Muslim wedding and they were just astonished at the similarities between our cultures, religion, language, traditions, etc. We spent the whole night talking, getting to know each other, they gave us relationship advice, professional advice… Eventually, we got to talking about how divided the world is right now because people are so set on talking about our differences when we should be recognizing that we’re all human and we all do the same things (in different ways, of course). I mean, this couple had differing political opinions than us on certain things, like the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but we are able to see past that. In the end, all any human wants is happiness and security for their loved ones. That’s a beautiful thing that we need to hone in on in order to put an end to terrorism. If you’re Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, atheist, black, white, brown, American, Latino, Arab, Oriental, Straight, Gay…if you’re a human being, I invite you to be my friend. Let me get to know you and I’ll share who I am with you. Talk to me. About anything. Any comment, question, anon, or direct message that comes from a place of respect will be responded to. So let’s just talk!
