I don’t personally like roleplaying with icons, and I think tumblr puts a lot of emphasis on aesthetic over substance.
Of course, people are more than welcome to use whatever format and graphics they like! Some of you guys come up with some really cool stuff, and I love to see how creative you can get!
But for me, I’ve been roleplaying and writing since before tumblr was even a website; my focus has always been communicating through text. Though illustration makes a great addition, I’ve been taught that it should never be the primary focus; anything you want to explain should be understandable through description alone, especially in a situation where you’re writing for, say, a bare-bones tabletop game scenario, where the players often have physical, static figurines.
At some point I’ve actually felt like people tend to pass me over because I don’t really format or use a lot of nice graphics and such– I made some icons for Nedzu from Beatrix Potter illustrations, and I might go back and cap some from the manga, but overall I just won’t use them.
