John Reese Rises.
From the darkness of the underground, to the top of the world (or the roofs of Manhattan), this is the symbolic rise of a hero.
Just look at the contrasts between those two scenes.
When we first meet John, in the subway (literally underground), he’s depressed, aimless, passive, all filthy. He doesn’t care about anything, and certainly not his appearance. And he’s all alone.
By contrast, in that finale scene, he’s at the top, in the light, smiling, he’s fighting, with a clear purpose. He has his spotless trademark suit. Clean shaven and hair perfectly disciplined (a known indicator of John’s mood).
The Machine is with him, Harold is not far. The symbolic hand on his shoulder is showing us he’s not alone.
