The Zeros (Prince Keith)
Yay for productivity! For the anonny who requested a Keith soulmate fic :)
It’s a soulmate timer fic, I hope you all enjoy! Meanwhile Joshua will be getting a stern talking to. How dare he, the butthead.
You tried yanking the sleeve down to conceal the mocking numbers. The fancy sleeves were a good couple inches too short. Damn it. The lacy trim almost reached, but almost wasn’t good enough. The zeros had been eerily still for almost seventeen years now. Every single one of those days they mocked her. You couldn’t remember time before they stopped. Back when You were a naive and blissful ignorant child, with a head full of dreams and romantic fairy tales.
The day would have been a glorious one spent for any child, for it had been a festival day. Papa started the day off by making a delicious breakfast. Bacon, eggs, biscuits, sausages, and the pancakes. Oh yes, the pancake incident. There were plates stacked high with pancakes everywhere. Mama finally had to yell at him to stop, it was way too much food for just the small family of three. Papa just stood at the stove confused, and the batter bowl in hand.
“But there’s more batter…” Mama collapsed her head in her hands and groaned aloud. At last you all left for the festival after freezing the remaining pancakes. They seemed to last for weeks afterwards those damn pancakes. Breakfast every morning was pancakes until at last they were all gone. Papa seemed to get an especially full stack with a side of evil glare from Mama. Who always managed to get away with having none. Complaining of the carbs, that she was on a diet, and that fruit was a fine breakfast.
At last it was time for the festival! You bounced eagerly on your feet excited for the day ahead. The excitement soon wore off upon realizing you had to wait. The king must make his traditional boring speech first and blah blah. The king blabbered on while you lost interest almost immediately. Perched high atop of Papa’s shoulders, you wiggled and twisted looking for entertainment. Finding nothing you resorted to tugging and playing with Papa’s hair. At last the surrounding people started cheering. Festival time?!
“Little monkey.” Papa patted your knee to claim attention. You answered by tugging a patch of his hair.
“The royal family is formally introducing the young prince. Hence today’s celebrations.” The prince?! You perked up excited something was happening at last. Of course everyone knew about Prince Keith, but only important people had met him so far. Papa and Mama taught you about the royal family. They said Prince Keith was still little, only a couple years older than yourself. So he was sheltered away during his young years from the prying eyes of the kingdom and the media.
The pretty queen stepped out on stage. Her gown was so beautiful! You stared in awe, you wanted to wear something as pretty as that dress one day! A tiny figure broke your admiration of the queen. Standing behind and almost swallowed by the vastness of her dress was a boy clutching part of the skirt. The poor thing! He looked so scared, if he was in your preschool class you would surely share your snack with him. He looked to be too old for preschool though, maybe kindergarten. Or even *gasp* in grade school!
Suddenly everyone started cheering, the young prince’s expression changed in an instant. He went from looking frightful to as if something smelled terrible. Maybe someone farted on stage. You giggled at the thought of their dignified king farting. The king was still blabbering on and Prince Keith was now standing up front and looking out to the crowd. You were lost in giggles and the excitement of the crowd. You couldn’t hear the beeping coming from your wrist. Papa cocked his head to the side and was about to question his wife if she too heard the noise. Another round of cheers distracted him and all was forgotten.
Mama hadn’t discovered the zeros until later right before dinner. Eating at the festival would be a special treat. Though Mama still brought her to a bathroom and ensured clean hands first. Mama assisted you in rolling up your sleeves when she gasped and held your wrist tight. She pulled your arm closer looking at something, Mama’s eyes were so big. Hand washing forgotten she picked you up and ran outside. She called out Papa’s name frantic, turning around in circles so fast you were getting dizzy. At last Papa found you and the spinning stopped. Mama was upset about something, she pulled on your arm again. Now Papa was looking too. You wish they would tell you! You were old enough! More important than that you wished for dinner greater. After a full day at the festival you were hungry! You were about to ask when Mama and Papa finally focused on you.
“Noms?” You asked trying not to whine. Papa only replied ‘soon’ and started asking you about a timer? You didn’t understand. Mama tried to simplify it for you. Oh the numbers! They meant the ones on your arm. Mama taught you what they meant awhile ago. When they reached zero you would meet your soulmate! But the numbers were so high, 6128 days Mama said. You couldn’t count that high, it must be a long time away.
You looked to your arm in question, but the high numbers that counted down everyday were gone. In their place stood zeros. Zeros!
“Mama, zeros! Where soulmate?” Mama didn’t respond, her eyes were wet. Papa had lots of questions though. You tried answering them but you were so hungry. You didn’t know why he was asking you these things, Papa should know that you didn’t meet anyone! You were with him all day long!
