NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler Telescope has spotted the first roughly Earth-sized world orbiting in the “Goldilocks zone” of another star – offering perhaps the best bet so far for life elsewhere in the universe.

A year on Kepler 452b, which is about 1,400 light years from us in the constellation Cygnus, is 385 days, meaning its orbit is just a bit farther away from its star than the Earth is from the sun. That places it squarely within what planetary scientists call the habitable zone, or “Goldilocks” zone — not too cold and not too hot.

“In my mind, this is the closest planet indeed to Earth,” Jon Jenkins, Kepler data analysis lead at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif, said at a media briefing. “The star is a little bit older and a little bit bigger and brighter, so it’s good that it’s a bit farther from its star.”

batman-and-goldilocks asked:

Okay so your slytherin percy posts are actually perfect and i noticed you mentioned in your last ask about your headcanons, and i was wondering if you would like to share them bc im 100% sure theyd be perfect

Awe thank you! So here’s just a few head canons I have down so far for Slytherin Percy (I haven’t gotten too extensive yet but this is just the general outline.)

  • He’s a pureblood. His mother and he come from the long and noble Jackson line. Sally was part of the Order and her family actively fought against Voldemort during the war. Because of this, they were deemed ‘blood traitors’ and hunted down mercilessly by death eaters. After Sally’s parents were killed she fled and lived with her Nomadic Uncle. Two years later a death eater tracks them down and her uncle sacrifices his life to save her.
  • Percy’s father, Poseidon, is a nomadic pureblood from Greece, exploring the world and learning about different types of magic along with his two brothers. Sally meets him one summer and she can tell he has a different type of magic than her own. By the time he continues on his journey Sally is pregnant, surprise surprise.
  • When Percy is born she can tell that there is something slightly different about his magic as well, something that reminds him of his father. She can tell he’s going to be extremely powerful
  • He does accidental magic as little as a week old, making his bottle float across the room.
  • His wand is made from the combination wood of an oak tree and ash tree, long, not too flexible but not too stiff, and with a phoenix feather  core.
  • His magical skills include - healing charms, elemental magic (mostly water and some earth), legilimency/occlumency, and a bit of dark magic (lesser known)
  • His favorite subjects are DADA and charms
  • His patronus is a fox.
  • He meets two kids on the Hogwarts express. A pretty blonde haired girl named Annabeth and a scrawny boy, Grover. Although Annabeth seems to dislike him at first, they quickly become the best of friends, despite ending up in separate houses. (He in Slytherin of course, and she in Ravenclaw)
  • He becomes the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch Team, playing the position of a Beater.
  • Percy and Annabeth start dating in their fifth year. They’re the couple to beat in practically everything since the team up together whenever they can. (Gotta watch out for those Slytherin/Ravenclaw duos)
  • But they’re extremely competitive with each other. She plays chaser on the Ravenclaw team and half the match are them fighting and/or flirting
  • He has some trouble fitting into the Slytherin house at first. There seems to be conflict with blood purity and ideals but he soon finds his rhythm within the house of snakes.

Right Time, Right Place: The Greenhouse Effect

This image, released recently by NASA, is the first one of Earth taken at a distance since the famous “Blue Marble” photograph, first published in 1972.

Looking at such pictures really causes me to marvel at how unique our home planet really is. As far as we know, we’re the only the planet with intelligent life, the only planet with active plate tectonics, and the only planet with liquid water on the surface. Are all these things related to each other? Yes indeed.

A year ago nutrify sent me this bracelet because I was going through some difficult times.

It’s a reminder that during your journey or whatever you’re going through, sometimes you’re on top of the world - stay humble - and sometimes you’re on the bottom - stay hopeful. So simple but so comforting.

It reminds me of how far I’ve come in a year and how much things can change if you keep working towards your goal. (Also reminds me what a great, supportive friend she is 😊❤️)
NASA’s Kepler Mission Discovers Bigger, Older Cousin to Earth
NASA's Kepler mission has confirmed the first near-Earth-size planet in the “habitable zone” around a sun-like star. This discovery and the introduction of 11 other new small habitable zone candidate planets mark another milestone in the journey to finding another “Earth.”

Finally, we may have a ‘Goldilocks Planet’! (not too hot, not too cold…) Today, NASA researchers announced results from the Kepler spacecraft mission that appears to have ultimately validated the mission’s objective: to find an Earth-like planet in the ‘habitable zone’ of its parent star. Kepler-452b may fit the description: slightly bigger than Earth (but still probably Earth-like in the sense of having a solid surface), slightly older than our planet, and well within its host star’s habitable zone. Does that mean it harbors life? We’re far from knowing the answer to that question, but the possibility that life might exist elsewhere in our galaxy just became slightly more real.

Nasa finds ‘another Earth’ in Milky Way which 'would feel a lot like home …

Nasa has found a twin Earth orbiting a star like the Sun in the Milky Way which scientists say 'would feel a lot like home.’ Kepler 452b - which has been dubbed Earth 2.0 - is six billion years old, has a 385 day year and orbits its star at the same [Read More]
Chris Colfer takes a different kind of glee in 'Land of Stories' books
Chris Colfer 's performances in "Glee" made him a Golden Globe-winning star (and a hero to kids who've been bullied for who they are . His "Land of Stories" books, for kids ages 8-12 and beyond, have made him a best-selling author.
By Chicago Tribune

Colfer visits Naperville and Skokie bookstores this weekend to meet tween fans and sign copies of the fourth book in “The Land of Stories.” Titled “Beyond the Kingdoms,” it’s the latest installment in Colfer’s fairy tale remix/mashup set in a never-never-land encountered by a brother and sister. “Beyond the Kingdoms” tails the twins Alex and Conner Bailey as they recruit Goldilocks, Jack, Red Riding Hood, Mother Goose and her gander to thwart a plot by some of the wickedest villains ever to darken children’s dreams.

“Glee” ended its six-year run last spring. “The Land of Stories” is paging toward its happily-ever-after conclusion — Colfer and his publisher planned for the fifth book, out next year, to be the finale. But in an email exchange, Colfer hinted at a possible plot twist. This is an edited transcript.

DAY 3: January 3rd:

  • I started my day talking with my friend again until 2:50 because i was super tired this time. >.<
  • I woke up around 8:00 because my mom and I had to go to Artesia because my mom’s friend’s mother had passed away. It reminded me that I should talk to my mom more because I barely know her.
  • After the funeral, we went to Goldilock’s and ordered Kare-Kare, Dinuguan, and Halo-Halo!
  • Then she dropped my off at North High for my first B-boy Jam!
  • The Jam was pretty fun I learned a lot.
  • After I went to my friend’s house @shamalamaringdingdong, we talked and I played with her little sister while she baked pazookies and made thai tea. She is a really good cook!
  • We had a movie night with a couple of friends from Key Club and watched Pitch Perfect and Hangover II.
  • I played pisoy and texas hold ‘em with the guys, but since we didn’t have any money, we bet secrets and stuff.
  • I ended up leaving around 10:10 with my sister, we went to target and then headed home.

Resolution Update:

  • My sister and I went to Target to go pick up some food: lettuce, red potatoes, and   lemon pepper.
