Here’s a treat to the Two Best Friends Play fan community! It’s a video of two Okinawan Goju-ryu karate masters demonstrating sanchin, featured in today’s Karate Master 2 episode. In short, sanchin is a practice where a karate-ka must control his breathing and apply tension to all of his muscles while a partner strikes his body with kicks and palm strikes, with usual targets being the ribs, the shoulders, the thighs and the testicles. The objective is to sharpen the mind and harden the body.
It’s painful to watch and not for everyone, obviously, but it’s living proof of how incredible these people are. Don’t forget the large, grisly callouses they’ve developed on their hands due to makiwara practice.
Morio Higaona, the older of the two masters, was once described as “the most dangerous man in Japan in a street fight”.
Above: The Japanese Kanji for Goju Ryu, the ‘hard-soft style’ of karate-do. A traditional style bred from the roots of Okinawan Naha-Te, Sensei Chogun Miyagi is it’s founder. This is my style, and there is little more in this world that I love as much as it’s kata and spirit. Yes, I may wander the world of the martial arts and try my hand at different styles, but I will always consider Goju-Ryu my true home, where my heart will always reside.
how old were you when you first started martial arts . i was 8 when I started taekwondo im soon to be 29 at the end of the month . So I want to here when you first started and what made you want to get into tell me your story
Jundokan’s Miyazato Eiichi, direct student of Chojun Miyagi. performing Seipai kata. The author of the video says “This my be the last film of him doing kata before his passing”. It’s a great video of one of Goju’s, and Karate as a whole legends.
I got to say this I love seeing all the support that each every one you give to one another its awesome to see the martial arts community support one another no matter the style . I especially like seeing have we all check up on each other seeing how training goes teaching or just day to day life you guys rock. this is what it means to be a true martial artist caring about the people around you its our passion and drive for the martial arts that makes us family
Woah. I went in with a bum knee thanks to a bad throw in Judo, and I honestly didn’t think I could do it. But I told myself that I would rather try and fail then give up, so I went through it. I gritted my teeth, bruised my knuckles, limped along the mat, and opened up some welts, and it was all worth it. I am officially a red belt, which means that I am only two testings away from Shodan (First Degree Black Belt). Bring it on….but let me sleep first. Please?
cool television special/documentary about a couple of Chinese Goju-ryu Karate tournament fighters who look for the missing link between White Crane gongfu and Okinawan karate. They interview masters from different branches of White Crane, as well as Goju-ryu.
do you ever wish you could train with some of you followers that live in other states even other countries . I know I would love to train with some of my followers whether it be my own style or with others that train in different styles . just to get some good cross training in or learn some new movements to enhance your own style would be nice
