Ooookay fandom, can we have a little chat about this “M'gann is now Space Mom” thing that’s been going around since the final? At first it was just making me a little uncomfortable, but @hufflepirate mentioned something that got me thinking about it more, and now I am very uncomfortable with the whole concept.

Because, look, just because J'onn and M'gann are an ~official couple now, doesn’t mean M'gann has to, or wants to, or is even remotely comfortable with taking on that role. Like obviously I don’t know for sure, and she very well might, and next season may give us more insight into it, but to me, with what we know about her, it just…doesn’t feel like something she’d be keen on at all? Especially not yet.

Space Dad/Papa Bear is a natural role for J'onn, because he’s already been a parent, because that role or relationship is incredibly important to him and was an important facet of his identity (eg: “My first daughter. When she came along, I finally realised I had a mission in life. I had someone who relied on me. Having her gave me direction.”). Even so, he’d been working with Alex for more than 2 and a half years, and with Kara for something like 8 months (?), and presumably looking out for them a lot longer, before he first even acknowledged that he considered them like daughters (1x11). And it really wasn’t until the very end of Season 1 and through Season 2 that he started being more open and affectionate and really embracing that father-figure role, first with Alex and Kara, then Winn, and then Maggie a little too.

Which is to say, he’s had a lot of time to figure out what he wants his relationships with the other characters to look like, and even though he’s already been a father, it’s still been a long process for him.

M'gann, on the other hand, has never been a parent (I mean, as far as we know, I suppose). More than that, she’s hardly ever even had a family: “I had a mother, once. She wasn’t warm, that wasn’t our way, but she cared for me, I know she did. I’d forgotten that feeling until now, what it felt like to have a family.” She literally hasn’t had any close, familial relationships since she was a child, something like 500/600 years ago (ugh @ martian ages, I make that up completely).

J'onn had a wife, children, friends, a career… We don’t know all that much about M'gann’s life on Mars, but we do know she felt like an outsider in her society so it’s unlikely she had many friends. We know she was in an arranged marriage, she was a soldier, and then she was a fugitive. She is far, far more emotionally inexperienced than J'onn (and honestly, than most of the other characters on the show). Like, my heart breaks every single time at the vulnerable, open way she tells J'onn, “I wanted…to be your friend,” in 2x10. And that it takes her a long time to figure out that what she feels for J'onn is romantic instead of platonic (“I feel it too. I have for awhile. I just didn’t…know what it was.”), whereas J'onn is far more confident in his feelings, suggests to me that she hasn’t had anywhere near enough close, caring and emotional relationships of any kind. (Also, did you notice she always says “care” and not “love” (2x11). Has she ever had anyone tell her they love her? Has she ever told someone else? (On a scale of 1 to 10 how badly does she need a hug?))

So she’s only just, just getting used to the idea that there are people who care about her, who want to help her, who want to be her friend, and who consider her family. To throw her into the deep end and expect her to suddenly take on an incredibly intense and demanding role? Surely, that would terrify the crap out of her? It’s way too much pressure too soon. It’s unlikely that she believes in herself enough yet as well. She seems so insecure in accepting that she means something to people. Already in 2x22 she seems more confident (the easy way she calls the other white martians her “friends”, my heart), and that confidence will hopefully only grow. But she needs time.

It’s also just like, not ever something she’s given any indication of being interested in… She wants friends. She wants a family. Never, ever has she suggested that she wants to be a mother. Like, fuck, she needs a mom just as much as any of the other characters do.

Which is not in any way to say that parent-child relationships can’t also be friendships, can’t be incredibly strong and mutually supportive. But it’s undeniable that the nature of a parent-child relationship is different than a regular friendship, and that for the most part the parent takes on the carer/support role. Which, yes, we know she’s nurturing and caring and good at looking after people - with both Kara and Alex in 2x11 for example. But I really feel like M'gann needs support and she needs friends/family in a very different way than J'onn does.

The parent-child relationship is something that has been missing from J'onn’s life, so it heals something within him [But also, can we please not make him be a father figure to every single character? Can we please let him just have a friend? James had a good dad, can’t they just be mates? I digress..] But the relationships that have been missing the most from M'gann’s life, the ones she most needs, are friendships, are equal relationships, are people who will support her and look after her and tell her they’re proud of her and with whom she can be as emotionally vulnerable with as they are with her.

I just… Can’t she just be? Can’t we let her choose for herself where she fits in the Superfam? Can’t we let her develop her own relationships with the other characters, outside of J'onn’s?

I don’t know, it just feels like a huge disservice to her character, and it feels like fandom just wanting her to fill a role without really giving any thought to her as a character and whether it’s one that actually fits. And we should also maybe think about why we’re so eager for the only black woman on the show to take on a maternal and emotionally supportive role towards the other mostly white characters, despite not giving any indication that that’s what she wants. And then…maybe not do that.

Like I get where this trend is coming from, and I love that people are including M'gann more, and I get that it works to slot her into the superfamily in this position. But like, we’re clearly all already capable of exploring non-traditional family dynamics, because obviously that’s what the superfam is, so it really shouldn’t be that much of a stretch to include M'gann as part of the family, as J’onn’s partner, while not necessarily ‘co-parenting’ with him. And I guess if people really do think that that’s what she’d want, then I feel like you owe it to her to give her the narrative importance to explain that choice and what it means for her, instead of just taking it as given. Because unlike with J’onn, there’s (currently) no canon backstory to ‘Space Mom’, except that she’s dating ‘Space Dad’. And that is really not a good enough reason.

Okay so I feel like this is not explained well at all, but as an example have a read of this fic by @aeveee. It seamlessly balances M'gann’s relationship with J'onn, J'onn’s relationship with his kids, and M'gann’s friendship with Maggie and Kara, without minimising any of them, and it’s a really lovely exploration of how these women might relate to and support each other (which the show has squandered). When M'gann is relegated to a purely maternal figure, that depth has the potential to get lost, and that’s a huge shame.

(And just to be clear, I’m not talking about like, tagging M'gann and J'onn as like ‘my parents’ or whatever, because that’s a personal thing and a general fandom phenomenon I think. I’m more thinking in relation to the fic/headcanons/meta etc that I’ve seen, and making her in-universe 'Space Mom’, rather than just an individual fan calling her mom.)

Tldr: J'onn has had a lot of time to process and get comfortable with being a father figure to the other characters, there was a very clear historical reason he chose to be, and most importantly he had agency in choosing it. Let’s not take M'gann’s away from her. Just because she’s J'onn’s partner doesn’t mean she’s also the Spacefam’s mom. That very well may be a role she chooses to fill in the future, but it’s highly unlikely she’s ready for it yet, and regardless we should let her choose it for herself (which requires actually give her the space/focus in fan works to do so).

I saw one of these powerpoints in the sp tag but i wasn’t satisfied with it so i got inspired. what year is it

i wanted to go into more detail especially about craig and those guys but i spent WAY too much time on this already so WHATEVER HERE IT IS

anonymous asked:

Headcanon on types for the boys? Specifically Akira and Goro but anyone else you want to :o(also thanks for turning on Anon >w<)

hokay since i’ve gotten a huge influx of asks over the past. like. 24 hours, i’m just gonna do akira and goro here but if y’all want more feel free to ask me!

(also: unless i get a bunch of asks telling me to kill myself or some garbage like that, i’m never turning off anon. i know what it’s like to be shy & want to stay anonymous for requests like this.)

akira

  • ok so akira would never really claim to have a type like
  • honestly if you were to ask this question to his face he’d just look at you funny
  • “type?? what r u talking about??”
  • he really loves p much all kinds of people, there’s no physical or personal trait that’s really a deciding factor for him or that tells him “yes that. that is the kind of person i want to be dating.”
  • it just kind of happens.
  • there are CERTAIN trends tho like
  • he really loves to fluster his s/o so there’s a good chance he’ll go for someone who’s easy to rile up like that
  • someone who can fill long silences between them, also, because he can be kind of quiet but he can sit and listen to people talk for ages. he just likes listening, likes the fact that people trust him with their words. even if it’s nervous chatter, it’s still their thoughts.
  • people who are passionate also grab his interest like, even if he’s got no idea what they’re talking about he’ll still listen and be like entirely enraptured because they’re just so ENTHUSIASTIC about it.
  • LOOK i know it sounds kind of generic but i see akira as someone who can really see the beauty in everyone so
  • say what you will

akechi

  • so i’ve said before that this kid cares about his public image
  • and that also kind of carries over into his “type”
  • (this is more talking about b4 spoilers occur, folks. he’d be a lot more genuine to his own feelings in an after-game scenario)
  • generally he dates people who are…conventionally attractive to japanese media?
  • fashion-forward, generally, pale, dark hair, etc
  • honestly if this boy follows his heart god knows where it will lead, but as long as he’s got a choice about it he’s probably going to pick someone who will look good with him on camera
  • he most readily goes for someone who is confident, who can handle the media backlash that happens whenever he’s rumored to be dating someone
  • but insecurities aren’t a turn-off, honestly, because he knows how that goes. intimately. way better than he should.
  • kindness goes a long way, also. he just can’t stand to be in the presence of someone who is hateful for longer than he absolutely has to
  • someone who has a life of their own, also, who can be busy and doesn’t need to cling to him constantly

here’s the thing:

you remake yourself into something you think people can love.
keep the skin, scrap everything else
rework your personality, your temper, your likes and dislikes
until you are nothing but a husk hollowed out and filled so that you aren’t really the same person at all

you stop laughing like you used to,
because you’ve been told the wildness of it is ugly
you keep your hair longer because people like it that way
and stall the discussion of your gender so that people won’t ask questions
keep the correct pronoun usage to a few close friends, as a selfish allowance

you steal bits and pieces where you can
a phrase you like
the way someone walks
paste them into this blank self you’ve created
and try to rebuild from other people’s parts
some things are new, specific only to you
but really, isn’t it all new?

the days pass
and you don’t understand.

you thought people could love this
could love you
if only you were easier to love

but this is still you
if only something you have created

and oh,
you are impossible to love
in any form.

okaY so ConSider ThIs–Mick’s medical skills probably aren’t half bad.

Like Len said, Mick’s always been the muscle to Len’s brains, and that means more often than not, Mick is the one coming home with the injuries, which he usually had to treat himself–Len isn’t an option, because as clever as he is with his hands, Len doesn’t really do gentle with anyone other than his sister (and sometimes not even then), and as a general rule, Mick doesn’t like to be touched by anyone that he doesn’t know and trust .  So he had to learn to administer medical treatment to himself.  He’s not a brain surgeon, but he’s about as good as someone who’s self-taught can be.  He knows how to check for a concussion and internal bleeding, how to stitch up an injury and deal with infection, and has a grasp of basic pain relief.  (He also probably knows how to deal with bullet wounds pretty capably as well).

Mick doesn’t really like to advertise these skills–they’re helpful when he needs them, absolutely.  That’s 99% of the reason why he cultivated them, but this particular skillset is distinctly removed from the version of himself that he likes to project.  Now, he doesn’t hide them either, but the ship can treat most other injuries, so really he doesn’t see much point in utilizing them when they’re unnecessary.

Ray is the first to find out.  Mick had meant it, after the gulag, when he’d said that they were even, and was personally content to leave it at that.  But Ray’s medical (and self preservation) sensibilities are terrible, and even though practically all his ribs are broken from that damn sledgehammer, his solution is to just go “eh, I’ll just bandage them and get back to work,”  because that’s how they deal with broken ribs in movies and stuff, right?  Wrap bandages around them and troop on?  Ray just makes the mistake of asking Mick for a hand bandaging them.  Ray winces immediately after, intimidated by the force of Mick’s glare, and pretty sure Mick is going to refuse his request for help on the spot.  He did not expected Mick to sigh in irritation because for fuck’s sake, sure, if you wanna die of pneumonia.  Instead, Mick does a quick check–running his hands along Ray’s ribs, trying to ensure that none of them are in danger of puncturing a lung.  Then, he firmly steers Ray into bed and gives him painkillers, as well as stern instructions to rest.  The rest of the crew coos at this, though Mick maintains that he was not doing a nice thing, he was just preventing an act of egregious idiocy.  No one actually believes him.

Sara is next.  She does not get injured so often anymore (I mean, it does happen, but more often than not she emerges from ridiculously dangerous situations utterly unscathed, a skill of which the rest of the crew is very envious).  But her old wounds might as well be fresh ones, some days–there was no time for proper healing on Lian Yu, and certainly not as a member of the League of Assassins, where you either got up and kept fighting or were left for dead.  As a result, many of her old wounds still pain her–a knot of scar tissue just under her arm that aches fiercely when it rains, a knee that hurts to move when she overexerts herself (which is hard, but not impossible).  Before joining the Legends crew, she would have masked her pain.  She’s gone years just gritting her teeth and pushing her way through.  But the more time that passes with the team, the less her instincts tell her to hide the pain–the more comfortable she is letting herself be seen at her weakest.  Now, on her worst days, after particularly brutal battles, she’ll give up on it altogether, and limp through the Waverider to collapse on the couch (yes, the Waverider has a living room, because I say so).  Now, the team will all try to comfort her in their own ways.  Jax and Ray will sit on the other side of the table and play board games with her.  Stein tries to replicate Clarissa’s mac and cheese (he cannot, but the effort is thoroughly appreciated), Rip will quietly postpone their next mission, and Len offers comfort as non-obtrusively as he can.  But Mick? Mick shows with a heat compress and a liniment for her knee and some advice–(lay on your side and put a pillow between your legs, it will straighten your spine and take the pressure of your injury) from old injuries of his own.

Jax (and by extension, Stein) find out the extent of Mick’s medical expertise in the field, when Jax takes a bullet in the side.  He’s hemorrhaging fast, flames flickering out as he unfuses with Stein, who looks so worried that a heartattack may be a legitimate risk. They’re far from the ship–but not from a nearby medical clinic.  Before the rest of the team can process what’s going on, Mick is pressing a jacket (requisitioned from Snart) to Jax’s side, and rushing him into the clinic, where one of the doctor’s takes over.  That should be the end of it, but Mick has had more than his fair share of bullet wounds, and backseat drives the fuck out of that medical procedure, because there’s no need to be so rough, doc and if I’d wanted him to bleed out I would have left him out there, jesus and basically just glares and intimidates until the doctor, in frustration, pushes the tools into Mick’s hands, because “you do it, then!”.  Mick shrugs, and does the job more neatly and efficiently than the doctor could have hoped (much to the man’s chagrin).

After that, the rest of the crew starts coming to him for everything.  For such a violent, large person, Mick is surprisingly delicate when treating injuries, with a feather-light touch.  Most of the crew discovers that they prefer being treated by Mick (who tries to avoid causing them pain, and who is almost sympathetic when he has to) than they do Gideon in the medbay.  Kendra gets a cut on her leg while sparring? She’ll hop, leg dripping, to his room and knock on the door–”Hey Mick, can you take a look at this for me?”

Stein thinks his back is acting up again? “Mr. Rory, would you mind terribly advising me on this?”

Even Rip gets in on it, though he argues that its because when he’s injured, he likes being able to receive treatment in the comfort of his own quarters.

Every time, Mick grumbles, don’t you guys have Gideon for this? I thought this ship was from the future–.  But every time, he takes a look at it, because he just knows that if he refuses they’ll just stand there looking sad and mopey, before limping off to the medbay, and for fuck’s sake, he’s not heartless (and maybe he likes knowing that he can use his hands for something other than destruction, but that’s another beast altogether)

TL;DR–consider Mick Rory, entirely against his will, becoming the team medic (and sighing because, damn, if he doesn’t step up, these idiots are all gonna die.)

(PS, let it be noted that, inevitably, there may be some basis in batmanisagatewaydrug’s headcanons in here, particularly her headcanons about Sara’s old injuries causing her pain, because her headcanons are so good that I can’t help but think of them as ingratiated into canon.)

Okay but i literally cried cause i love donghyuck so much. He is so precious and so pure hearted even though he mess up with people he loves so much like a little brat he actually has a golden heart. He always tries his best to make people happy. I hope he is happy and healty and rests well and eats well and knows he is loved so much by so many people and knows that he is so precious that he is one precious angel and i am so thankful for his existence and i hope be will always be so happy. I hope he’ll always smile and shine on us brighter than the sun itself. God bless him, i love him so much, i would die for him.
