Watching this is making me so thankful that I live in an era where people with mental illness are treated with kindness and compassion and humanly. Granted it’s still not on par with the treatment and understanding for Physical Health and there is still a stigma attached to it. But my gosh, everything has changed so much in a mere 50 years and god knows I’m thankful for it.

Lucifer is awesome, go watch it right the fuck now
Going into the show, I wasn’t really expecting much. I thought it would be your typical, garden-variety show constantly trying to outdo itself with how durk and edgee it could make the devil character. Good, but nothing special.
I have never been so pleasantly surprised in my life. The show is amazing! I think the reason it works so well is because the characters are treated as characters, not one dimensional tropes with no development or motivation.
This version of Lucifer is quickly becoming one of my favourites, and let me tell you why. Might be spoilers, idk?? Scroll past if you don’t want vague as shit references to stuff that happens in the show.
You get the usual devilish things, the arrogance, the sex, the rock n’ roll lifestyle.
There’s the wrath. Even that’s different to every other devil I’ve seen on screen or in print. It’s this quiet wrath, and it’s somehow more unsettling than simple violence could ever be, though he’s not adverse to that either.
But you also get some very surprising elements to his character. Insecurity and deep rooted fears of rejection that genuinely hinder the character in tangible ways. He runs away when Chloe sees the scars on his back, and he’s so clearly terrified in that moment. Those scars are the constant reminder of the greatest rejection he’s ever faced. The moment his wings were cut from his back and he was cast away by the parent who was supposed to love and protect him, but instead put him in charge of a glorified torture chamber and turned his very name into the embodiment of evil.
All of that trauma created a need to be wanted, a constant undercurrent of loneliness we see him try and fill with wild parties and sex. We see intense sadness when he realises all those people, those men and women he shared his bed with, don’t really consider him meaningful. He’s just a good fuck. It hurts him to see that said over and over again because he so desperately wants to mean something to someone, anyone. I have never seen that before with this kind of character and it’s honestly one of the most quietly heartbreaking scenes I’ve watched.
We see the other side too, the fun, jokey part of him resulting in some of the funniest dialogue I’ve heard outside of the comedy greats. The stubborn and childishly impatient part that causes him to barrel into situations and wonder why it all went wrong. There’s softness there too, a delicate part of him that cares so, so deeply for those close to him but never quite understands how to express that without making himself too vulnerable. It’s the same part that cries when his own cell in hell forces him to kill his brother over and over again, because he’s never wanted to hurt Uriel, or any of his siblings, and never got to to tell him that.
There’s so much more than I can list right now. I’d be here for hours and I still haven’t gotten to how awesome Chloe Decker is. Finally, a truly strong female character who is treated like an actual person with actual fears, likes, dislikes, and motivations. She’s wonderful, an absolute bamf but still sits and plays princess tea part with her daughter because that’s her idea of having fun. Then there’s Maze and Linda and Ella and the Goddess of All Creation (also known as Mum) all amazing female characters, two of which are POC. Trixie is adorable, and a refreshing take on modern kids. She’s smart and funny, and her interaction with Lucifer is hysterical. Dan is a great male character. He tries his best bless him, and he’s a really good dad. He and Lucifer are a fantastic bromance…if they can stop bickering that is.
Just…go watch this show. Please. Treat yourself. Don’t pass judgement until you’ve seen the second season, because that’s when all the character development set up in the first truly pays off. Not that the first season isn’t awesome, because it is. Go watch. It’s on Amazon Prime.
