go stars go!

hey i wanna talk about erik klose

  • “i feel like he could hold me up forever” erik isn’t just emotional support he’s a soccer player and he is s t r o n g
    • he got them Midfielder Thighs™
  • he fuckin loves soccer movies ok
    • nicky, already grinning, in response to erik’s parents asking how his day was: alles ist gut
    • erik, sliding into the room in his socks and running into a wall: soLANGE DU WILD BIST!!!!!
    • used Bend It Like Beckham and She’s The Man to practice his english
    • he definitely has a poster of jess bhamra in his room, she’s his hero
  • he is SUPER tall
    • (he’s actually taller than matt when his hair isn’t spiked)
  • him and nicky are low key competitive as fuck and they run together when nicky starts training for exy
  • nicky quickly learns that trying to outlast a midfielder on a run just. doesn’t work. they do the most running on the team and typically go whole games without getting subbed out.
    • 3 miles in nicky is wheezing and dying and erik is laughing like the absolute traitor he is
  • but!! it wasn’t all sunshine at first i mean come on,, this is the foxes
    • when nicky first got to the Klose’s he was reserved, quiet.
    • erik was taking a year off to travel with friends during the first 6 months nicky was there
    • when both parents agreed nicky could stay for the summer for some extra classes so he could graduate on time (by american standards), he finally met erik
    • tall, athletic, kind erik, erik who came home with all kinds of candy from all kinds of countries to give to a boy he never met all to make a pun about what a “sweet deal” it was to have someone new in the house, he felt his heart race when nicky smiled at him for his ridiculous efforts
    • that’s the first time the klose’s saw a real smile come from nicky
  • erik convinced nicky to go to church after a while
    • it was hard at first, especially when nicky noticed erik was getting some weird looks from some of the older people in the congregation
    • when nicky asked why, erik told him about how when he came out his grandmother stopped speaking to him, and how some parents didn’t want to let erik come over to see his friends
    • but then erik told him how his parents told anyone who wasn’t okay with their son that they weren’t worth having around, that they loved erik and they wouldn’t allow anyone to try and make him feel bad for being himself
    • and how his cousins snuck out and took him to his first pride parade in hamburg
    • surrounded by people who actually care, nicky started to hope again
  • nicky starts to smile more and erik…he’s so smitten. his new mission in life is to make nicky smile
  • erik’s humor is usually really awful puns and dad jokes, but he also is really good at keeping a straight face while saying absolutely ridiculous things, leading people to question whether he’s really serious or not and nicky fighting super hard not to bust out laughing (because he’s the only one who can tell he’s joking)
  • nicky prides himself on being pretty fashionable so he’s not entirely sure how the hell he lets erik get away with wearing those awful toe shoes. the. the individual toe ones.
    • you know the ones
  • the first time they kiss, erik was climbing a tree and fell out, because all his grace stops the minute he steps off the field
    • it was a forehead kiss because, well, erik’s face was bleeding, but yea
    • they’re a bit of a mess, but they’re cute, ya know?
  • nicky and erik are the type of couple to go to the grocery store at 2am because they really want to make mac n cheese and accidentally end up buying 4 pounds of candy instead while serenading each other to the weird 90s music the store is playing
  • erik loves aldi’s and wants to live there. everything is so cheap, nicky. they have my favorite cheese, nicky. nicky. where are you going. nicky i live here don’t leave we haven’t bought any bread yet-
  • he owns crocs. he just. he does. he bought orange ones when nicky joined the foxes and fuckin little white fox paw insert thingies because he’s a supportive boyfriend, dammit
  • he draws smiley faces on everything. notes to nicky, his notes at school, on his meeting notes at work, and his favorite place: on nicky.
  • he’s one of those people who can’t tan for shit, he just burns then freckles. nicky is constantly nagging him to wear sunscreen. he always forgets and sends nicky pictures of his bright red shoulders only to get pages of texts ranting about sunscreen and melanoma
  • he’s got scars everywhere but theyre all from like. the dumbest stuff. there’s a big one on his knee from sneezing while on a run and subsequently tripping on the sidewalk and wiping out. several are from falling out of trees. he broke his nose falling out of the shower because he freaked out when he saw a spider. again, all his grace is on the soccer field. everywhere else he’s a hazard.
  • he’s really, really clumsy. he loves fiercely because that’s how his parents taught him. he knows he’s lucky to have a family that stuck by him, he knows it’s the least they can do, but so many gay kids have shitty parents. kids like nicky. and erik may be gangly and clumsy. he may be competitive and he may not always understand how nicky feels because he hasn’t experienced what nicky has. but he has fallen out of more trees than anybody he knows, and falling in love with nicky is an ache he’s never been able to ice away, and would never want to anyway.

In your recent Battle Fever J post you mentioned that the film Saturday night fever inspired Battle Fever J's secondary theme but you also mentioned in another post that some of the Metal Heroes were inspired by Robocop were there any other toku series that was inspired by a film like those series were?

Oh yes, several!  It’s been happening for a very long time, at least since the 1970s but it didn’t end there.  We’ll get back to the 1970s and one of the most obvious examples later but let’s look at two recent Super Sentai series inspired by the success of Western franchises.

In the early 2000s, no one could dispute there was magic in the air and that magic was making money hand over fist.  Starting with a massively successful book series and an equally huge film adaptation, the adventures of Harry Potter might be the defining pop culture franchise of the decade.

There were a lot of attempts to cash in on the success of the Potter idea and Toei was not one to ignore a trend that might make them some money.  That’s why in 2005, they produced Mahou Sentai Magiranger.

The similarities were pretty obvious given that the heroes could travel around on broomsticks:

There was a moving painting in their secret magical room headquarters:

And those are just two examples. The inspiration was pretty obvious.

Just because it drew a lot of inspiration from another franchise did not mean it was a carbon copy or a bad show.  For a while, Magiranger was one of my favorite series of all time and I still really enjoy it to this day.  I find the borrowed ideas and concepts more fun than frustrating.  It’s always amusing to see how familiar ideas get translated into new media in other countries.

Now, inspiration doesn’t always come from live action franchises, sometimes you can see an animated success inspiring a series.  In the late 1990s and early 2000s the biggest animation studio in America was Pixar.  This was just before Disney outright purchased them and completely abandoned traditional animation in favor of computer animated films so they were the big player on the black where CG animation was concerned. In 2006, Disney released Pixar’s latest animated film and it was a huge success (at least among the target audience) making not just a ton of money in the box office but driving a merchandise machine that continues today as well as leading to two sequels and several spinoffs.  That movie was Cars.

In 2008, Toei found a way to bring some of the Cars aesthetic and concepts to their Super Sentai series with Engine Sentai Go-Onger,

Now, I have no official confirmation that there was any direct influence but it seems pretty obvious upon reflection.  Cars had come out in Japan on July 1, 2006 and became a hit.  The Sentai series are always planned a year before they begin, so 2007 was when the planning for Go-Onger began. The timing is just a bit of a hint.  What else gives away the inspiration is in the show itself.

First of all, the car characters are sentient vehicles from a world without people, just like in the Pixar film.

The main car hero is a red racing car, just like in the Pixar film:

And the cars have big friendly eyes at the front.  Plus, when interacting with their human friends on Earth, most of the time they are animated characters created on screen using cell-shaded CGI.

When you add it all up, the influence and inspiration is pretty obvious.

Now, let’s go back to the 1970s for one that’s pretty infamous for being pretty much a rip-off.  Let’s start with the show itself and we’ll get to what it drew inspiration from at the end.

In 1978, Toei company produced and released a movie called Message From Space.

It is the tale of the Evil Gavanas Empire who control most of space and just taken over the peaceful planet Jillucia who send a message into space seeking help to defend their world.  Going with the message is their Princess and a powerful warrior.  The films was directed by Kinji Fukusaku (Battle Royale) and was a minor box office success.

However, it did well enough to inspire a TV spinoff written by Shotaro Ishinomori called Message From Space: Galactic Wars. Now, what this is inspired by/ripped off from can pretty much be explained in this one screenshot from the TV version.

Yep, the entire Message from Space concept was a blatant attempt to cash in on Star Wars. The comparisons are incredibly obvious with an evil Empire, a ragtag band of rebels, epic space battles, planet threatening death machines and lovable robots sidekicks.  Here’s the real kicker though, I have heard that Toei actually got the official release of Star Wars pushed back in Japan so their film would come out first!  Message from Space was released April 29, 1978 to Japanese theaters while Star Wars didn’t arrive officially until June 30th of the same year!

So, there you have it.  Three more times when tokusatsu drew direct inspiration from other media franchises outside of Japan.  I do love seeing these cross pollinations of media and how they change and adapt and are used to create new ideas or how they can be added to an already existing franchise to create a new work.

Counting the Hours

The day after the explosion in the town square, Rosaline and her sister found themselves tending to the injured – and dying – victims of the attack. As ladies of the Capulet household, they should have been nowhere near the grim realities faced by the citizens of Verona. Their aunt had protested mightily when the sisters donned their aprons and marched toward the door to leave.

“You will do no such thing! A lady does not debase herself among the peasants! You will bring even more shame to this house than you have already!”

Rosaline wrung out a cloth, watching the blood mix with water and sighed to herself – her aunt’s words echoing through her head. How she hated that woman. She couldn’t wait to be out of the Capulet house and away from both her aunt and uncle. Free to do what she pleased.

She paused realizing the familiar train of thought – one that had come up too often in the last few days. Away from the household meant marriage to the Montague.

“…and here I thought you were counting the hours.”

His last words before their separation the previous evening had been a jape – throwing her statement during their mockery of a picnic back in her face. Yet…she’d had no retort – no argument. Perhaps she was too distracted by their adventure in pursing the villain behind the treachery. Perhaps…there had been truth in those words.

Marriage to the Montague felt like a prison sentence at the time of the prince’s declaration. Her freedom had been ripped away from her without a second thought by the man who’d professed to love her. She’d wanted to go to the nunnery - escaping both her dreaded betrothal and any future interaction with Escalus. Yet, while she’d prepared her departure, Rosaline had time to think upon her predicament and the choice she was to make. A choice that would impact not only her, but her sister. In the quiet of the Capulet household after the discussion with her uncle, she began to truly deliberate over the man to whom she was betrothed.

In the church that fateful evening, Benvolio had protested the marriage of Romeo and Juliet just as much as she. He’d also saved her at the hands of the despicable Truccio the day of the riot. She knew he’d seen her and the prince in the alcove yet said nothing of his discovery. Montague could have berated her for refusing to take the carriage to the abbey yet he’d accepted her apology during the betrothal ceremony without protest. And when she’d taken off running after the explosion, he’d followed without objection.

So when he’d teased her about counting the hours to their wedding, she hadn’t disagreed. She could honestly imagine a life away from her aunt and uncle where Livia would be safe. After all the sisters endured, the possibility of a life free from the Capulets and their scorn seemed an answer to their troubles.

Rosaline turned and continued her ministrations on the wounds of the young man who lay before her. Charred flesh rendered black by fire, still there was no complaint to be heard from his unconscious form. She did the best she could to clean and dress the injuries, knowing it was unlikely the young man would live to appreciate her careful work.

She gathered the cloth and stood up, only to see the strong form of Benvolio Montague leaning against a stone column, his hand upon the hilt of his sword. He did cut a rather dashing figure in his doublet, she thought absentmindedly.

The young woman nodded her head in his direction and moved to the table to deposit the bowl and soiled linens. After a moment, she felt his presence next to her. A warmth and comfort she was surprised to welcome.

His voice was low and quiet – out of deference to the injured and dying around them, to be sure, but…possibly out of respect for his fiancé as well…you dolt - her inner voice chided.

“Montague.” She responded and offered no additional reply.

“I went to your villa and was told you’d come down here.”

“Of course I’m here. Would you expect me to sit in that house all day, doing nothing to help the people after an attack during our betrothal ceremony? I am not useless, Montague.”

He placed his hand upon hers, stilling her motion. “Peace, Capulet. I would never call you useless. On the contrary. You are one of the most fearless women I’ve ever come across.”

Rosaline looked up at him, expecting the same teasing countenance she’d seen in his eyes the day before. Yet there was no such expression. His eyes bored into hers with sincerity and…appreciation?

“Well…thank you.”

He removed his hand from hers and she felt the sudden coldness from his lack of touch keenly on her skin.

“Would you like some help?”

Rosaline smiled and nodded. “Yes…Benvolio. I would appreciate your assistance.”

She watched as the corner of his mouth rose in a gentle smile at the use of his given name. It remained there while she placed the fresh linens in his hands. He cast his eyes downward, almost shyly, when he spoke again.

“Perhaps after we finish, I may escort you and your sister back to your household.” He shrugged, looking more like a timid schoolboy than the confident Montague heir. “I’d hoped we could talk more…about those behind the attack.” He paused. “And about…other things.”

Rosaline tilted her head and looked her fiancé in the eyes.

“I’ll be counting the hours, my lord.”

His smile grew larger at her words - the jape now something intimate between the two of them rather than a barb to be used against one another.

Rosaline once again found the truth in those words. Counting the hours, indeed.

  • Victor: No, seriously, I have no self control and I told the pretzel vendor we’re engaged.
