Why Bill Nye Changed His Mind on GMOs | RealClearScience

“… early last year, in a very public about-face, Bill Nye changed his mind on GMOs.

"I went to Monsanto and I spent a lot of time with the scientists there and I have revised my outlook and I’m very excited about telling the world,” he said backstage on Real Time with Bill Maher.

GMO opponents were quick to denounce him.

“Sadly, it appears that Bill Nye has gone to the dark side,” Jennifer Lilley lamented for the conspiracy-oriented Natural News, under the ridiculous headline “Monsanto propaganda scientists brainwash Bill Nye into changing position on GMOs.”

But it wasn’t brainwashing that made Bill Nye change his mind. As he explained in his 2015 book Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World, it was a healthy dose of evidence, coupled with an abrupt awakening to the unscientific nature of the anti-GMO movement.

“Recently, I mingled in the crowd at a political rally in New York City. The theme was anti-GMO,” he wrote. “I can tell you that it’s not the big corporations that scare me. It’s these people at the rally.”

By and large, the protesters adopted a conspiratorial mindset, he noticed. The ever enthusiastic Science Guy was unnerved. “I’m all for raising legitimate questions, but these people seemed to be woefully uninformed and obsessed with finding a scapegoat for what they perceive as society’s ills,” he wrote.

He contrasted his experience at the rally with his visits to Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University. At both locations, he met scientists who, like him, aim to use science to change the world for the better….“

Hillary’s Lawyer May Have Exposed her Emails to Chinese Hackers

Maybe it wasn’t Russia after all. Hillary’s lawyer, Heather Samuelson, had a Lenovo Laptop, which has been banned from use by State Department officials since 2006. Banned from use…because the Chinese company had pre-installed malware programs in them that allowed remote access, according to the Washington Examiner. Samuelson perused Hillary’s emails in an effort to sift through and separate…

Signs Point to Takeover of Marijuana Industry by Bayer-Monsanto

From Humans are Free:

The purchase [of Monsanto by Bayer] means a lot of things, and none of them good for consumers. For one, it strengthens the monopolization of the world’s food supply. It also means more genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and chemicals to be doused on them.

Now, some are predicting the merge could also mean the takeover of the marijuana industry. Monsanto has an intimate business relationship with Scotts Miracle-Gro, “a convicted corporate criminal– and Scott’s Miracle-Gro is trying to take over the marijuana industry,” according to Big Buds Mag. …

“Michael Straumietis, founder and owner of hydroponics nutrients company Advanced Nutrients, has constantly warned the marijuana community about Monsanto, Scotts Miracle-Gro, GMO marijuana, and corporate takeover of the marijuana industry.”

The two corporations, which have now merged into one, have agreed to share trade secrets about plans to produce genetically modified marijuana.

So it’s conceivable than in the near future, it will be difficult to get non-GMO marijuana. What a world. Read the rest.

Preparing the meat that we raised together as a family.
July 11th 2016
Atlanta, Georgia

This is our fourth year of running our backyard rabbitry. Our rabbits are cared for and loved. We have a great admiration and respect for the animal. Before we butcher our rabbits my children have learned to say, “Thank you for being here for us and for making us stronger, we will not waste your meat, you are now a part of us.” The children do not have any problems with the harvesting of the rabbits they help raise. They are excited and feel like they are contributing to the family. We believe this makes them more confident growing into the people they will become and more respectful to the environment they are growing within. There is something that has changed within us since we began raising our own meat. There is an understanding that is gained by being responsible for the lives that we end so we can continue. We are tighter as a family because we shoulder the reality of understanding how much dies to keep us alive. Past experience in sharing these particular endeavors that we engage in as a family lead me to believe that many of you reading this may find it unsettling, to say the least. We only ask that you try to understand that we are choosing not to participate in factory farmed meats. The meat that we harvest and eat in our house has been loved or, if hunted, has lived a real life.

We hope our latest family blog post finds you doing well and in the present moment with an open mind.

Most respectfully,

Academies of Science finds GMOs not harmful to human health
Genetically engineered crops do not cause increases in cancer, obesity, autism or allergies, a new report says

Genetically engineered crops are safe for humans and animals to eat and have not caused increases in cancer, obesity, gastrointestinal illnesses, kidney disease, autism or allergies, an exhaustive report from the National Academies of Science released Tuesday found.

Work on the 388-page report began two years ago and was conducted by a committee of more than 50 scientists, researchers and agricultural and industry experts convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. It reviewed more than 900 studies and data covering the 20 years since genetically modified crops were first introduced.

Overall, genetically engineered (GE) crops saved farmers in the United States money but didn’t appear to increase crop yields. They have lowered pest populations in some areas, especially in the Midwest but increased the number of herbicide-resistant weeds in others. There’s also no evidence that GE crops have affected the population of monarch butterflies, the report said.

The review was thorough and systemic, assessing many of the issues that have been raised about genetically engineered crops over the years, said Gregory Jaffe, director of biotechnology at the non-profit watchdog group the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington D.C. The group was not involved in the report’s creation.

One GMO’d super plant = cabbage, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, kale, broccoli, cauliflower.

Brassica oleracea is a species of plant that, like the apple, has a number of different cultivars. But these cultivars differ widely from each other: cabbage, kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, collard greens, and cauliflower. Nutty that all those vegetables come from the same species of plant. (via @ajsheets)
