Why don’t other school shootings stand out as much as the Columbine High School Massacre?

This question is something I have been pondering over for a long time. Why did Columbine make such a huge impact when school shootings just like it happen so often? What made Columbine so unique? I have some theories as to why this could be.

1. The Duo: I believe the relationship Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shared is one of the biggest factors. The fact that there was not one shooter, but two, truly captivated so many people. How often can a person find someone willing to go through such heinous acts alongside them, and at such a young age? These two grew up together for many years and shared an intense hatred for the world around them. They knew what they wanted to do and began planning many months before the event took place. Because of this, the Columbine Massacre played out like no other. While most shootings have just one culprit acting on a short spurt of passion or anger, Eric and Dylan had been hellbent on revenge for a long, long time and worked together to make it happen. Neither one of them got cold feet or chickened out at any time, which proves how dedicated they were to each other and their plans.

2. The Trend: Both of them knew how the world would react to their story, that they would gain a large following and a series of copycats. In the journals they wrote and webpages they created they stated many times how they knew society would allow their names to live on forever. They knew 100% that the media attention they would get after they died would cause a domino effect in the years to follow, and they couldn’t have been more right. Since 1999, the number of school shootings has skyrocketed and are even beginning to become a trend. There were 17 major shootings in 2012 alone. Eric and Dylan hated everyone and wanted them all to die, and they were aware that by going through with the Columbine massacre, people would continue to die because of them through proxy, even after they themselves were long gone.

3. The Warning Signs: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold left a staggering amount of clues and raised many red flags in the time leading up to the massacre, but it still never occurred to anyone how two young boys were capable of doing such a thing. It never even crossed anyones mind. It’s like they left a trail of breadcrumbs that no one noticed until it was too late. The two boys intentionally left bombs and guns in desks and drawers in their rooms like it was a game, and anyone could have found them and prevented the whole thing… however Eric and Dylan both knew no one was looking. They left everything out in the open so that the world would feel the guilt after the tragedy.

4. The Reasoning: The two of them documented their journey and their thought patterns leading up to the day for the world to find after the damage had been done. They wrote their plans and what they were thinking in great detail on webpages and in journals, even taping or recording themselves talking about it. No matter how many times we look at their explanations or reasonings or justifications behind their actions, we will never fully understand why they did what they did, however Eric and Dylan really did try to make it so.

5. The Making of an Icon: The way they looked, the clothes they wore, everything they did became absolutely iconic. You see a black t-shirt with WRATH written in red lettering or a white t-shirt with NATURAL SELECTION written in black and you know straight away where it’s from. The names Reb and Vodka will forever belong and make you think back to them. The black trench coats and suspenders and combat boots, the pair of gloves they shared on the day of the crime. It all seems like one big movie scene and it all links back to them. Nowadays you see the ‘new’ school shooters idolising and copying everything Eric and Dylan did, like wearing their own t-shirts with edgy phrases such as 'Humanity is Overrated’, all trying to stand out in the way the Columbine killers did so easily.

6. The Timing: The 1990’s and 2000’s were a very significant time in our history. Eric and Dylan were a part of the first generation of people to grow up with revolutionary technology such as computers and the world wide web. In this time, media was really beginning to flourish like never before and while there have been school shootings prior to Columbine, none of them ever received such an astronomical amount of attention because the means for it had never really been there to that scale. Columbine was revolutionary and Eric and Dylan, both having an above average knowledge on computers, media and the internet, knew that it was the best time to make the attack. “Producers will be fighting over our story.”

Of course, there is no right or wrong answer to this question. No one will ever really know why Columbine stood out so high above the rest. Our society works in mysterious ways and with so many tragedies happening somewhere in the world every day, there’s no way of knowing what one will make the headlines next.

DBK’s confiscated BMW items

His essay about “The Man in Black” killing preps was found in the glove box.

Video: Dylan’s BMW is the second car on the right next to his best bud pulling in. Matching Rammstein stickers - Dylan (bottom of his rear window), Eric (top rear window). Kinda like the OTP glove sharing thing. ;)

This is in reply to c0atimundi’s comment in the Quirks: Indiosyncrasies of DBK’s: punk gloves which I posted a while back. Based on studying close-ups of their gloves in the death repose shots, I would say that the two most probably shared a pair of thick, heavy weight padded black gloves on 4/20. Looking at Dylan’s signature finger wave in the Morning Ritual video we can make a comparison and definitely say it’s not those gloves since they are more of a knit pair of gloves.

The clue-in for me was that both have the same exact white cotton padding material oozing out of the finger holes where the gloves were probably hastily cut with a pair of handy scissors just shortly before they left Eric’s house.  I did some searches of images of people that DIY finger cut  heavy-weight style gloves and none seem to show this same type of white cottony material where the cuts were made.   I’d say it’s a good bet that it is one single pair of gloves shared by both for NBK if not a certain type/brand of gloves that they both bought/wore for the day - we just can’t be certain which scenario is the case.  Given how much injuries and bleeding their hands sustained just during their practice shooting at Rampart Range, they probably opted for a heavyweight, thick gloves that could absorb the kick-back shock and spare their hands.  Why cause themselves any unnecessary pain during NBK when the idea was to inflict the pain on others that day? Anyway, just a little observation I made recently and wanted to share for any further thoughts/input.

Another interesting side note: I also marked an arrow in the death repose shots of the ingenious wrist match strikes the two are wearing in opposite yin/yang mirroring of their dominant hands: Dylan on his right wrist and Eric on his left.  They almost seem symbolically like shared brothers-in-arms silver bracelets. The two invented these tools so they could quickly strike a match and light their incendiaries and pipe bombs effectively.  I believe the FBI was actually impressed because this hadn’t been invented nor used before.  Too bad these clever dudes did what they did and killed themselves, huh?  Sharp, creative, talented minds, what a misplaced waste…

- Winter taking Matt and Mello by surprise every year, scrambling to find their scarves, gloves and hats

- Mello complaining every year about how they can only ever find three gloves because he swears they bought new pairs last year

- Matt sharing the glove with him, wedding both their hands inside and keeping them there even when it becomes too hot for both of them

- Matt having comedic ear muffs which look like orc ears

- Mello slipping on the same damn icy spot every other day no matter how much grip his new winter boots have

- Mello blowing out puffs of air as Matt smokes to imitate him

- Matt telling Mello he would make a terrible dragon unless he can do it out of his nose

- Hurrying inside out of the freezing rain, practically running to the bathtub to start the hot water while both of them shiver, peeling off wet clothes before climbing into the warm water with the most relieved sighs

One of the challenges in my life as a busy working single mom is meeting people. I met someone yesterday who is a beautiful example with listening to his intuition and not letting fear control most of his life.

He is touring the United States and we happen to meet for a night. Sharing some of my favorite spots in Arizona is always a joy. However, I appreciate most the lessons learned. He told a story of his travel in Korea where (unwisely) he was hiking a tall mountain during the winter without proper attire and equipment.

Instead of wisely going back to his hotel when his hands began freezing, he continued on alone. While hiking in a more precarious area he was came upon a woman climbing over an icy rock. She slipped and almost fell to her death but for my friend catching her by the shoulder. A man who was also hiking in the same direction that had been scowering at him as they passed each other finally confronted him about his lack of protection for his hands. Although the language difference made communication challenging, the Korean learned he didn’t have gloves. This man had packed up the hill an older pair of gloves and extra food. He proceeded to hike with my friend sharing gloves, food, and even one of his clamps from his own feet.

If my friend had not been there what would have happened to the woman? If the Korean had not been there… My friend would have had serious health challenges at the least. I am amazed and awed at how we help one another when following these prompts.

Without a doubt George Harrison. However, I don’t see him as a Beatle, but as a person. There is a difference for me. I know how much it annoyed George to be addressed as a Beatle years later. He was an independent person who once played in a band called The Beatles. George gave me a lot of humanity and I’m still profiting from that today. He was my best friend.
—  Klaus Voormann on whether he has a favorite Beatle, and on his friendship with George Harrison, translated from an interview with Berliner Zeitung, 24 November 2003

Mafia AU: Bokuto, Kyoutani and Hinata's civilian s/o (who doesn't know they're in a gang) seeing them kill for the first time?

Here I go with my angsty ass. Some parts are more sad than others, but it’s the Mafia life. What do you expect?

Bokuto Koutaro:

Since the day your relationship started he vowed to protect you from the unsightly element sin his life. What exactly that was you were unsure of until you found yourself eye to eye with the face of a dead man. Bokuto was breathing heavily, almost as if he was having a panic attack at the expression on your face. He made a promise and he couldn’t keep it. It was only a matter of time before he fucked up.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I never should have involved you with my life.” He muttered, burying his face in his hands as he began to pace, running through all the possibilities of how he could make you forget what you had seen.

Your mind felt muddled in confusion and terror as realization danced on you that Bokuto had just killed a man in front of you, almost too naturally. There were a million questions you wanted to ask, but neither of you were in a condition to think rationally. You needed to breathe.

Shakily you stood from your spot on the pavement, suddenly feeling lightheaded for a moment before calling out to your distraught lover. “Kou, I need to go home,” He nearly jumped at your voice, fumbling to say he’d take you home right now. Even so, he was still a sweetheart. “Alone. I need some time to think things over. You understand, right?”

His stomach dropped into his ass, but he knew this was to be expected. He just killed a man in front of you for god’s sake. “I get it.” Bokuto sighed, watching with sad eyes as your back filled his vision, not bothering to look back because if you did, you’d both crumble.

Kyoutani Kentaro:

You knew all to well the short temper your lover had, being the one to calm him from his rage before he could do anything he’d regret. But this time he didn’t regret pulling the trigger on the bastard who came far too close to you. A man with malicious intent. Being part of the mafia had it’s downsides, promises to lead a life of loneliness unless you want to watch the ones you love be turned against you.

You shouldn’t have been surprised to be put in such a position, but you were in shock. There was a man lying dead in front of you, there wasn’t anyone who wouldn’t be afraid. Unless this was only a daily repercussion for someone like him.

Kyoutani spared you a glance, body stiffening as you sat motionless on the ground, eyes fixated on the blood slowly trickling out from the lifeless heap. He hated this. He hated himself. The last thing he wanted was to hurt the one he held so dear to him, accepted him despite his faults. You watched as he clenched and unclenched his fists, appearing conflicted as if in a struggle with himself. You’d admit that you were scared, not of him, but rather for him. Whatever he was involved in you wanted to help deal with.

“Ken, let’s go home.” You called out to him softly, and for the first time in a while Kyoutani felt relief. Why weren’t you running away? Why don’t you hate him? “Please, we can sort this out when we get home.”

Golden eyes bore into you as he finally turned to face you, unsure of what to make of anything. “This needs to-I have to take care of this…” There was something about his voice that made you sure he’d come home to you.

Gently, you leaned up to place a chaste kiss to his cheek, fingers tracing his jaw lightly. “Be careful, and please come home to me.”

Hinata Shoyou:

He didn’t want to do this, not in front of you at least. It was naive to think that he could lead a double life with the hopes of not getting you involved with the mafia. How foolish.

The shot echoed through your ears as you watched with wide eyes as a body hit the ground with a thud, a pool of velvet already beginning to form.  You couldn’t breathe nor think, stricken with fear and confusion as you watched the man you love pocket the gun before making a beeline towards you. This wasn’t right. Hinata, the boy who was quite literally a ray of sunshine, the one who made you misshapen omelets in the morning, and even shared his gloves with you on cold days had just killed someone. Nothing made sense and your world was spinning out of control from your finger tips.

The redhead knew all to well the expression on your face, one of fear and confusion. He cursed himself for dragging you into this, but he knew that trying to explain himself would only make it worse.

“You need to leave.” His voice, normally warm and gentle, was cold now, no hint of emotion. His expression had hardened into a mask, trying to hide the hurt as you stared at him, mouth agape.

The words were lodged in your throat, unable to make a sound as you flitted between the blood and your lover. “Bu-But I–I can’t-” You never finished, quickly being shoved out of the alleyway, sirens already sounding from the near distance.

“It’s better this way. You shouldn’t be involved with someone like me.” Hint growled, turning towards the alley once more before bidding you a final farewell. “Goodbye, ___.”

when will i stop hurting over this

anonymous asked:

could you do a jack maynard imagine where it's just him and reader doing normal day-to-day things eg. shopping for food, washing up ect? I love your writing btw x

Thank you!

Domestic life with Jack would include:

  • Arguing over who’s emptying the bin
  • Jack wearing marigold gloves to do his share of the cleaning (he so would though)
  • Changing the duvet cover takes a literal age
  • He somehow ends up inside it ???
  • “Help, I’m stuck!” And then you climb inside it to find him but it was just a trick so he could cuddle you and it’s really warm and toasty. “I could seriously lie here forever.”
  • “How many bags for life does one person need!?”
  • “Jack, we do not need a big trolley.”
  • “Yes we do, if one of us wants to sit in it.”
  • “You’re not sitting in the trolley.”
  • Having a list full of healthy fruits and vegetables to get but somehow only getting two avocados and a bag of carrots
  • Dragging him down the healthcare aisle and he gets proper awkward in front of all the pads and tampons, playing with his fingers and looking anywhere but at them
  • “They’re just pads.”
  • “Yeah, but… they’re for… that area.”
  • “Carry on and you won’t be getting near that area.”
  • Going down the aisle with all the biscuits and sweets and crisps and he keeps asking for things
  • “Can we get-“
  • “Yes, Jack.”
  • Going down the alcohol aisle and he suddenly becomes a wine expert
  • “I don’t care, Jack, they all taste the same.”
  • Stocking up on Ben and Jerry’s because it’s on sale
  • Standing by the fridge freezer and he’s stood by the cupboards and passing each other stuff to put away
  • “Dinner?”
  • “Yes, dinner… Takeaway?”
  • Doing the dishes and Jack sneaks up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist just as a slow song comes on the radio and he begins swaying to the music
  • Getting comfy on the sofa, all stretched out in jumpers and sweatpants, head on his chest and you’re just falling asleep when…
  • “I want Doritos.”
  • Jack pushing you in a trolley (“Oh, so it’s okay when you go in the trolley!”) through an empty Tesco, racing up and down the aisles as you tell him to “slow the fuck down!” and worrying about what the staff think but it’s just gone midnight, they really couldn’t give a shit
11. “Don’t you dare throw that snowba-, goddammit!” / 25. “I can’t believe you talked me into this.”

Scenario: December, heavy snow, Suga and Yachi walking home with their crush and the crush relaizes the opposite doesn't have gloves! Reaction to them giving the babies one of gloves, one for temselves and making them holding hands so "every hand will be warm now"?

Sugawara: Sugawara would smile to himself, turning down his crush’s offer at first, because he wouldn’t want their hands to be cold. However, thanks to the cold and his lover’s determination in sharing their gloves with him, it wouldn’t take him too long to give in and take them up on the offer. Sugawara would chuckle at their innocent and genuine behaviour, blushing very lightly once the skin of his hands would finally touch theirs.

Yachi: Yachi would probably openly blame herself for her stupidity and forgetfulness, looking up in confusion once her crush would offer sharing their gloves. Feeling slightly dumbfounded and perhaps even getting a thought of not deserving such kindness, Yachi would start stuttering a little, her fingers fumbling with the buttons of her jacket. Once her crush would actually put one of their gloves into her hand and holding out their own for her to take, Yachi would gather up the courage and hesitantly take her lover’s hand.  (On another note: She would be very prone to getting such ideas herself).
