gloria root

A woman-of-color who writes poetry or paints or dances or makes movies knows there is no escape from race or gender when she is writing or painting. She can’t take off her color and sex and leave them at the door of her study or studio. Nor can she leave behind her history. Art is about identity, among other things, and her creativity is political.

What's your opinion on the new season of ahs?

I got this message like 5 billion years ago, but I’m only just answering it now because I’m a piece of shit.

I think Freakshow took way too long to find a direction and solid plot. For more than half of the season, I was left wondering what Ryan Murphy was aiming for. Twisty lasted 2 seconds, and the writers somehow swiveled his story around to be something that would provoke sympathy from the audience, though it just felt like a very forced effort. Nearly every main character annoys me, and I feel that it’s very important for a TV show to have at least 2 characters one really roots for. I was rooting for Gloria until she was murdered… I guess I’m rooting for Dandy now, because he’s just… fascinating. FASCINATING. Finn Wittrock is doing a spectacular job, and everything else just pales in comparison. Sure, we needed Twisty to show Dandy the light and whatnot, but why build Twisty up that much to just throw him away and have a little tiny pity party before he goes? Who even remembers him, anyway? No one in the series, apparently. Anyway, go Dandy.

I think Elsa’s storyline is the weakest. Just a disclaimer - I’m not insulting Jessica Lange, so don’t eat me. But it’s really one of those “been there, done that” roles. Minus the leg sawing. But aside from that. It’s just a repeat of Coven’s Fiona. Aging lady who used to be top dog is now being upstaged by some young fresh face (or faces) and, blinded by jealousy, tries to eliminate the new competition but fails in the end (sorry, but Elsa’s ending probably isn’t the happiest).

Sure, the freaks are getting their two seconds of stardom, but it’s really just focused on the able-bodied actors. And sure, the freaks weren’t trained at Julliard, but many of them are holding their own against our seasoned returners - especially Paul the Illustrated Seal and Amazon Eve. I’d much rather see Penny and Paul than Jimmy and Maggie. Speaking of Jimmy and Maggie, the pressure for Evan Peters to have a love story every single season is incredibly tiring. I think it would be so much more interesting if he was single and not looking for anything. Even though Jimmy annoys the cashews out of me, I’d prefer it if he was just there doing his lobster thing without fucking everything that moved and breaking Dot’s heart because ooooo he just LOVES Maggie (why? I don’t know why because there has been no substantial interaction between them. They just survived being captured and now they’re in love and that’s all that matters la dee da).

Hmm… what am I trying to say here? Well. It’s scattered. This season is scattered. From the random green smoke that came with Edward Mordrake to Stanley’s 13 inch dick, it’s just… what is going on. I mean, I can now finally see the direction we’re going in, and I hope it’s not going to be the predictable mess I think it will be. Jimmy cut off his hands so Maggie fainted because oh god how’s he gonna finger me now (just kidding) and Maggie’s going to try to be goodie two shoes and get Stanley out of there and Stanley will blackmail Del into killing more freaks and then everyone will find out but then they’ll blame Maggie too and then Maggie will die and Jimmy will cry out “NOOOOO” like he always does and then he’ll either murder someone or drink himself to death and then Bette and Dot will be like surgery yes surgery no surgery maybe and before they can go through with the surgery someone will stop them and Elsa will be ruined and the freakshow will collapse and basically everyone will die because that’s AHS and oops Ryan needs to kill more people than he planned on so there will be random killings that don’t make sense because oops we need them gone and then Dandy will pop in and have an epic faceoff with Jimmy and Ethel’s ghost will just sit in a corner and say wise things because Kathy Bates still needs her paycheck and Angela Bassett will run around in circles doing whatever but at least we have her because she’s famous and we need to give her as much screen time as possible for more viewers and more money and then either Bette, Dot, or both will still be alive at the end because Sarah Paulson’s characters just don’t die on AHS ever and then it will end on either a very unsatisfying note or a very cheesy one like last season and Ryan will scramble to connect the seasons because surprise they’re connected even though he said the point of the show was that they weren’t connected but surprise bitch.

ANYWAY. Freakshow is my least favorite season and Murder House will forever be my favorite. Bottom line - bring Lily Rabe back and keep her, change up Jessica Lange’s roles, stop giving Evan Peters a love interest, stop underappreciating Frances Conroy, and figure out what the fuck you’re going to do before you try to execute it.

- Questions? Comments? Concerns? I am entitled to my opinion, so if you happen to read this incredibly long mess and have a problem with it, keep it civil please -
