Lego Aims to Use Plants to Make Their Bricks

What if one day the world’s Lego bricks were made from plants?

Sounds like a bit of a stretch, but it might actually happen.

Lego bricks today are made from the same type of petroleum-based plastic they were made from since 1963. Now, considering Lego’s booming success in the market, today, that’s a lot of carbon being projected into the atmosphere. Fortunately, the Lego Group’s doing something about it.

The Lego Company has devoted itself to make all of it’s Lego bricks and packaging mediums from sustainable materials by 2030. And one of the sources of these materials are plants; sugars are extracted from vegetation, such as wheat and corn, and then are used as a substitute for petroleum in the bricks. The Lego Group’s prototypes are still undergoing development, as quality, safety, and play-ability are major foundations of the company’s success.

Lego has already stated that they will spend 1 billion Danish Kroners (143,317,810.00 USD) and assign at least 100 employees in order to make this happen.

So, maybe not tomorrow, but one day Lego bricks will be made from plants! Great job going green, Lego!

Nicaragua re-affirmed its commitment to its decision to refrain from the Paris Agreement, and has criticized the accord for failing to hold the world’s most major polluters accountable as well as not recognizing Central America is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the effects of climate change, facing drought and harm to agricultural systems, threatening food security for many of the region’s poorest. Nicaragua is the 4th most vulnerable country to climate change’s effects in the world, according to the Global Climate Risk Index 2014. It maintains that the deal does not do enough to hold countries like the U.S. accountable. Voluntary commitment on the part of history’s largest polluters, they say, is not enough. Dr. Paul Oquist, Minister-Adviser of Public Policies of the Presidency of the Republic of Nicaragua, asserted that the Paris Agreement should take into consideration historical and financial responsibility for climate change, and be legally binding for the few countries who since the Industrial revolution have contributed more than 70 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions.

Dear Student Nurse;

Today you came to our unit at an extraordinary time.
Scratch that, it wasn’t a day that was necessarily unheard of, but perhaps a day we would rather you remember as a heartbreaking reality, and not a day you were shooed aside and out of the way.

Dear student, we know you were scared when you scurried behind us, as we responded to the asystolic rhythm on the cardiac monitor, so instead of throwing you in the deep end, we found you a little place on the periphery where you could take in the whole scene, and learn everyone’s roles… we know you were a little annoyed, we know you wanted to stand close to the patient, we know you wanted to help, but the room quickly flooded with dozens of people who moved lightning quick to save this life. It wasn’t our intention to sideline you, but we have a hope that where you stood you were able to take it all in, not just the nurses, but the role of the doctors, respiratory therapists, and nursing assistants too - so when you start out as a baby nurse, you won’t feel so lost, so when you have your first code - you will have the picture in your mind of the flow, and what each person should be doing.

We know you have a thousand questions, and we have every intention of answering every single one of them after we’re done, but right now, we are orienting two new baby nurses on the unit - ones who were in your shoes not too long ago as a student, where they had the opportunity to take all of this in, from the periphery - today is their chance to see it up close, to put in practice what they’ve observed, for us to support, explain and correct each of them as they are doing it, and our focus right now cannot be split.

We understand your friend got “to do it all” with their own preceptor, and that’s awesome, but it’s possible that the unit they were on may not have had a new nurse (or more) on orientation and although you may not understand it yet, it takes a hell of a lot of focus and demand of attention when you are precepting, so we are not super nurses - we are prioritizing safety when we choose to have the new nurses in the thick of it, and the student observing.

We understand you’re hurt, we understand you feel sidelined, but please consider the family standing next to you while you’re complaining about “not getting to do anything.” Please consider this is not just a skill to check off; it’s a human life that’s fighting to stay alive, it’s a very devastated family that’s also taking in this very chaotic scene.

Dear student nurse, today you witnessed a patient crashing, and you witnessed a patient dying. Moreover, you witnessed firsthand how we are going to support you when you are a new graduate nurse, when your very first patient codes. Today you stood on the sidelines, consider how powerful a tool that observation alone really is. As nurses, we don’t often get this opportunity…today you did.

All the tomorrows, you may not get that opportunity to just watch, listen and learn. You will be on the frontline; the primary or secondary nurse - the adrenaline, the fear, mind racing, all the hands on practice you can take, the heartache, the stress, the responsibilities….so today, stand back. Take in the bigger picture, for chances like today will not come often.

Those first world intellectuals engaged in repopularizing communism tend to make movementist strategies and tactics their default practice. Placing their faith in disorganized rebellions, they argue either explicitly or implicitly that we must tail every unfocused mass protest that erupts in response to global capitalism. The argument, though not always stated, is that these protests will, through some inexplicable mechanism of combination, produce a revolutionary critical mass, at some point on the distant horizon, that will finally resolve the communist hypothesis- this is precisely what is now called movementism.
There was a time, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, where most of us believed this movementist strategy was synonymous with revolutionary praxis. We went to Seattle to protest the World Trade Organization; we assembled in Quebec City to challenge the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas; we proclaimed that we were part of a beautiful and fragmented chaos of affinity groups, conflicted organizations, disorganized rebels, all of whom were somehow part of the same social movement that was greater than the sum of its parts. We believed ourselves to be raindrops that would produce a flood capable of sweeping away capitalism, unwilling to recognize that this was perhaps a false analogy and that we were more accurately, in very concrete terms, a disorganized mob of enraged plebeians shaking our fists as a disciplined imperial army. Years ago we spoke of “social movementism” but now it only makes sense to drop the “social” since this phase of confusion was incapable of understanding the social terrain.
So while we should endorse every rebellion against capitalism and imperialism, no matter how desperate (as Frantz Fanon once put it), we should also realize that the unfocused nature of these rebellions is intrinsically incapable of responding to the problem of necessity …

[Movementism] goes nowhere because, due to its very nature, it cannot approach the point of unity- the point of theoretical and practical totality that post-modernists warned us to avoid- that should emanate from the understanding that communism is a necessity. For when we speak of necessities we also have to speak of building a unified movement that, due to this unity, will possess the intention of making what is necessary a reality.

There is no such thing as a meat, cheese, milk, egg-eating environmentalist.
Excerpt from Adaptt.org

Meat-eating environmentalist = Oxymoron

Animal Agriculture and Environmental Destruction

Many people who fancy themselves to be environmentalists are fond of demonizing the automobile industry, calling it the number one agent of global pollution. (Just look at some of the literature emanating from such “mainstream” organizations as Environment California and the Sierra Club.) However, when it comes to environmental destruction, animal agriculture is the elephant in the room that no one wants to acknowledge, confront, or talk about. Animal-based agriculture is the number one cause of deforestation, air pollution, and water pollution. Therefore, those people who still incorporate meat, eggs, or dairy products in their diet cannot claim to be environmentalists.

Here is a summary of how the production of meat, eggs, and dairy products takes a staggering toll on the ecosystem:

Water Pollution

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the runoff from factory farms pollutes our rivers and lakes more than all other industries combined. In the U.S. alone, animals raised for food produce 130 times more excrement than the entire human population—86,000 pounds per second. A typical pig factory farm generates as much raw waste as a city of 50,000 people. Chicken, pig, and cow excrement have polluted over 35,000 miles of rivers in at least 22 states and contaminated groundwater in at least 17 states.

What’s more, chicken, pig, turkey and cow excrement comprise the sole source of all the recent E. Coli, salmonella and listeria outbreaks in which spinach, tomatoes, peanuts, jalapeño peppers, cantaloupe and other plant products have been implicated. E. Coli, salmonella and listeria have only one source: SHIT (human or animal)! Since spinach, peanuts, jalapeños, cantaloupe and tomatoes don’t shit, spinach, peanuts, jalapeños, cantaloupe and tomatoes cannot be blamed for this problem. E. Coli, salmonella and listeria found their way to the plants because people who enslave animals for meat, dairy or eggs contaminate the waterways by dumping nearly 2.7 trillion pounds of manure into America’s lakes, rivers and streams annually. Contaminated water eventually ends up on some of the crops as run-off, passing E. Coli, salmonella and listeria to the consumer. Also, more frighteningly, there are many times when farmers literally spray tons of RAW animal shit directly on the crops. Make no mistake: ALL E. Coli, salmonella and listeria incidents occur because of animal agriculture. Meat, dairy and egg-eaters want to eat billions of land animals. So ConAgra, Smithfield, Tyson, Perdue, etc. MASS PRODUCE billions of land animals far in excess of the numbers that would occur if these animals were left to their own reproductive devices and inclinations. Billions of land animals produce trillions of pounds of excrement.

Chemical Pollution

The majority of pesticide intake comes from animal products because the meat, dairy and egg industries douse billions of animals with chemicals to kill flies and mosquitoes that spread diseases from animal to animal. These chemicals seep through the pores, where they’re permanently stored in the animals’ flesh. Only a small percentage of pesticide intake comes from plant-based foods. But the majority of that residue can be washed away pretty easily. You also have the option of purchasing organic plant foods, which solves the chemical problem altogether. While you might be able to buy some chemical-free animal products (which is pretty hard to do because animal feed is rarely organic), there are still four issues that can never be overcome: slaughterhouse cruelty; the commodification and enslavement of animals; the deleterious effects of consuming animal protein, casein, cholesterol, saturated fats and trans fatty acids; and the environmental destruction and world hunger caused by animal-based agriculture. The government also allows crops set aside as animal feed to be sprayed with 2 to 20 times the amount of chemicals used on crops set aside for human consumption!

Water Use

Raising animals for food consumes nearly half the water used in the United States. Since no one needs to eat an animal in order to survive (except those living in icy and desert settings—see the ETHICS, LAWS and TRADITIONS section), that means fifty percent of all the water in America is wasted on animal-based agriculture. It takes an estimated 800 to 2,500 gallons of water to produce a single pound of beef, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. Maintaining a carnivorous diet for a single person requires 4,200 gallons of water per day. A vegan diet for a single person requires only 300 gallons of water per day.

Land Use

Of all agricultural land in the U.S., nearly 80 percent is used to raise animals for food. More than 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain for animal feed, and about 85 percent of the seven billion tons of topsoil lost in the U.S. each year has been directly attributed to the enslavement of cows. It takes twenty times more land to sate the appetites of meat, dairy and egg-eaters than vegans: those who eat animal products require roughly 3.25 acres of land per person per year to feed themselves, whereas vegans require only 1/6 of an acre per person per year.

Rainforest Depletion

About 214,000 acres of rainforest, comprising an area greater than that of New York City, are destroyed every day. Some of this is for cows to graze, while some of it is to grow crops for animal feed. More than 2.9 million acres of rainforest were destroyed in the 2004-2005 crop season in order to grow crops that feed chickens and other animals in factory farms.

For every pound of hamburger produced in rainforest countries, approximately 220 square feet of rainforest are cleared to grow the required feed. Through this clearing approximately 2,600 pounds of living matter will in the best of circumstances be displaced, or destroyed altogether. This living matter includes roughly 20 to 30 different plant species, over 100 insect species, and dozens of birds, mammals and reptiles. What is more, along with the biomass found in coral reefs, rainforest vegetation is said to be one of the most promising sources of heretofore-undiscovered chemical compounds for treating many diseases that were once thought to be intractable. These resources are simply laid to waste when rainforest is cleared. Even worse, unlike coniferous forest land, tropical rainforest can never be replaced once it has been cleared.

Energy Use

The meat, egg, and dairy industries are heavy consumers of fossil-fuel resources. Raising animals for food requires more than one-third of all the raw materials and fossil fuels used in the United States. The best flesh-food enterprise returns a paltry 34.5 percent of the invested fossil-fuel energy as food energy, measured in terms of caloric expenditure. In contrast, the poorest crop enterprise returns a whopping 328 percent. In other words, the least-efficient plant-based food is nearly ten times as energy-efficient as the most-efficient flesh food!

Air Pollution

Whether you’re a hardcore liberal who believes that humans are responsible for global warming, or a staunch conservative who believes that the warming of the earth is a natural cycle, I think we can all agree that intentionally emitting nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere can be classified as pollution. And pollution has the potential to sicken the earth and its inhabitants. Liberals and conservatives alike must understand that the feces of all animals in the meat, dairy and egg industries emit nitrous oxide and methane, two highly noxious pollutants. Plus, when it comes to carbon dioxide, few people recognize the devastating impact that destroying rainforest to grow crops for animal feed can have on the environment. For example, it’s becoming increasingly well-known that burning one gallon of gasoline in an internal-combustion engine releases about 19 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But clearing and burning enough rainforest to produce just one hamburger releases 165 pounds of carbon dioxide. Veganism, as always, is the best, most efficient way to help the environment. After all, there is no such thing as a meat, cheese, milk, egg-eating environmentalist.

Thoughts on Okja

I have thoughts so here’s a sort of scattered list

  • I find it interesting that in the three Bo Joon-Ho films I’ve seen(The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja) he never goes for an outright sad or happy ending, he tends to land somewhat pensively between the two and that’s interesting.
  • Also I’m noticing that across all three films he has some themes he keeps returning to which tend to have an environmentalist bent and I’m all for it, I’m just noticing a pattern now. (chemical waste=monsters, man made ice age in response to global warming and now corporate consumerism)
  • I have rarely felt as viscerally uncomfortable as I did during every scene with Jake Gyllenhaal. Like he’s going all out, I can’t say it’s a bad performance but like…that voice…what the hell was he doing with his legs in that bit?? Like wow
  • I love how natural the little girl is. In her acting and in her look. She doesn’t have movie star looks, she just looks and acts like a real kid and she was stellar and I love her she’s played by Seo-Hyun Ahn and I hope she has a long and successful career.
  • Also what a badass that child is. I love the moment when the Mirando people wanted to like take a cute photo with her and she broke their dumb cardboard thing.
  • Paul Dano has just the weirdest energy as an actor in general. I think the best use of this was in Little Miss Sunshine where he was just a weird teenager. Now as an adult he’s like some weird violent fairy(I don’t mean like in a homophobic slur way I mean like a strange magical creature) he’s really odd and brings that to bear in an almost aggressive gentleness for this role that is both sweet and deeply unnerving.
  • I do not like that there is a scene where Paul Dano(ostensibly a heroic figure) violently beats up an Korean man, I’m not sure if this is mitigated by the fact that a Korean filmmaker made the film it’s not really my place to say but that is a thing that happens. Other than that I like his character and his determination to help Mija and Okja and keep them safe is very nice.
  • Steve Yeun is really great. I suspect if I had been able to sit through The Walking Dead it would have been for him. He’s so charming even when he’s being kind of shitty, I like what they do with his character.
  • I liked the energy Lily Collins brought to the group as Red. Sort of generally pissed off but also with a lot of heart and Devon Bostick was…odd. Partially because of my hangups associated with his character by season 3 of the 100(still havent seen season 4) but also that whole nobly starving to decrease his footprint was…I don’t think it was a bit much for the film but for the character it sure was.
  • Tilda Swinton is doing her weird schtick here. And gets weird teeth again idk what else to say she’s good and also it’s another weird role. Less aggressively strange than her Snowpiercer character maybe but it’s a near thing.
  • WATCH UNTIL AFTER THE CREDITS
  • I don’t know if Okja looked as immersively real as an effect as some people claim? It’s not like Avatar or something(Shit movie very good effects) but the expressiveness they got into this CG animal and how realistically he interacts with the environment around him is incredible and a true artistic feat.
  • but also I recommend you watch this on a big screen. There are a few moments with small on screen text that I could not read on my 30 inch tv screen.

She’s the one with the messy unkempt hair colored by the sun. Her skin is now far from fair like it once was. Not even sun kissed. It’s burnt with multiple tan lines, wounds and bites here and there. But for every flaw on her skin, she has an interesting story to tell.

Don’t date a girl who travels. She is hard to please. The usual dinner-movie date at the mall will suck the life out of her. Her soul craves for new experiences and adventures. She will be unimpressed with your new car and your expensive watch. She would rather climb a rock or jump out of an airplane than hear you brag about it.

Don’t date a girl who travels because she will bug you to book a flight every time there’s an airline seat sale. She wont party at Republiq. And she will never pay over $100 for Avicii because she knows that one weekend of clubbing is equivalent to one week somewhere far more exciting.

Chances are, she can’t hold a steady job. Or she’s probably daydreaming about quitting. She doesn’t want to keep working her ass off for someone else’s dream. She has her own and is working towards it. She is a freelancer. She makes money from designing, writing, photography or something that requires creativity and imagination. Don’t waste her time complaining about your boring job.

Don’t date a girl who travels. She might have wasted her college degree and switched careers entirely. She is now a dive instructor or a yoga teacher. She’s not sure when the next paycheck is coming. But she doesn’t work like a robot all day, she goes out and takes what life has to offer and challenges you to do the same.

Don’t date a girl who travels for she has chosen a life of uncertainty. She doesn’t have a plan or a permanent address. She goes with the flow and follows her heart. She dances to the beat of her own drum. She doesn’t wear a watch. Her days are ruled by the sun and the moon. When the waves are calling, life stops and she will be oblivious to everything else for a moment. But she has learned that the most important thing in life isn’t surfing.

Don’t date a girl who travels as she tends to speak her mind. She will never try to impress your parents or friends. She knows respect, but isn’t afraid to hold a debate about global issues or social responsibility.

She will never need you. She knows how to pitch a tent and screw her own fins without your help. She cooks well and doesn’t need you to pay for her meals. She is too independent and wont care whether you travel with her or not. She will forget to check in with you when she arrives at her destination. She’s busy living in the present. She talks to strangers. She will meet many interesting, like-minded people from around the world who share her passion and dreams. She will be bored with you.

So never date a girl who travels unless you can keep up with her. And if you unintentionally fall in love with one, don’t you dare keep her. Let her go.

Human beings may be the only living creatures in the entire universe who have a universal consciousness. We have a staggering sense of the immense and mysterious cosmos we are part of.Therefore, not only do we have a global responsibility to save our planet. We have a cosmic responsibility.
