glacial rivers

Because of the heavy rainfall, Icelandic has plenty of rivers and they are relatively large, glacial rivers and fresh water rivers and streams

The water in the glacial rivers is usually a milky grey and they can smell of sulfur. The flow volume can be enormous, they are ice cold and you need to be very careful around them. You won´t survive falling into one like this

Arctic fox on a glacial river

Watch on

Fox eyes.
Stuck in the highlands late last year as an impassible glacial river rushed down from the mountains, I spent four days under rainy skies with the arctic foxes. During this particular moment, I sat frozen as he edged closer and closer to the water. Even a slight shake of the camera could have scared him away.
They’re truly beautiful creatures. (at Þórsmörk)

The Gulf of Alaska is informally known as the place where “two oceans meet”, although this is not entirely true. The lighter blue is sediment-laden water from glacial rivers that runs off and meets with the ocean water (dark blue). Since ocean currents are always shifting, the border will fade as the glacial river water mixes with the ocean.
