I want to make it clear to all my followers: I LOVE YOU ALL! Narrowing this down to a list of 20 was super difficult.

But, I thought it would be good to take a few minutes to give a special shout-out to my tumblr friends and family, the ones I talk with a lot, make my tumblr life better and whom I will follow forever.

I always feel like I have to look just like the character or people will hate it. And since I'm bald and stocky and don't want to be Professor X my options feel super limited. It's choosing the character that's most difficult for me. I haven't even got to the "making the costume" difficulties stage yet. >____<;;;

Um…are you cosplaying for yourself or for other people? Serious question. I mean yes, you want others to like your costume but what’s more important is that YOU love your costume. You do not have to look just like the character. Cosplay is about having fun, not being a perfect duplicate of a cartoon. What about the fun of making & becoming a new version of a character you love?
My friend Wendell is also bald & stocky. You might have seen him. He’s the Shadowcat to my Colossus, among dozens of other amazing costumes.

He doesn’t let anything stop him from cosplaying any character he wants & neither should you. Your options are only limited by your imagination. Who are your top 5 favorite characters? Cosplay one of them. Look at all the different costumes they have ever worn, and choose the one you like best, that you think you will look cool in. Also one that is not crazy challenging, since it’s your first costume. Do as much research as you can on sewing & crafting so that you can make the best costume possible. And wear it to a con with friends & have fun! :)

Hello! I just wanted to let you guys know that post about Bethesda having the first female assassin is pretty problematic. I know it's a joke, and I know it's probably not intentional, but it still reads as an erasure of women of color in leading roles. While I know we're all really excited to play as Emily in Dishonored, we shouldn't joke about her being more deserving of the label "first female assassin" over Aveline or Shao Jun.

Hey there! I really appreciate you taking the time out to politely educate me (and likely others) on this. I initially reblogged it for what I perceived was a jab at Ubisoft, the company, and not Aveline + Shao Jun specifically. I’m sorely disappointed by the poor marketing and small budget they both got saddled with compared to cis white dudebro assassins. I read that post as punching UP vs punching DOWN, but your message encouraged me to re-read, and I do see now how “first female assassin” can be super problematic.

I sincerely apologize for that! I’ll be making more of an effort going forward to really screen innocuous seeming posts like that one in the future. I definitely don’t want anyone to feel excluded!

tl;dr Thank you for bringing this to my attention and challenging me to check my privilege. I always appreciate learning! 💕 forever to the WoC lady assassins setting the bar super high.

Now that I’ve finally rescued it from Post Office Limbo, I can officially thank gkjaylee for being an amazing and selfless person for getting this copy of WicDiv signed by kierongillen, mckelvie, and Matt Wilson at ECCC and sending it to me for NO CHARGE WHATSOEVER. Like, what an amazing human being right there. So, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! :D

And special shoutout to kellysue for putting the original post on my radar.

gkjaylee replied to your post: 2 days left until I move out of my apa…

Are you going to have any sort of fan meet-ups or anything while you’re on the tour?

No I won’t, sorry! I will be focusing on working. I haven’t worked this much in a long time and I will probably be very tired most of the time. When I’m feeling decent I will make videos and post them, as well as taking photos of each city I visit. And writing my mom letters because she made me promise. Lol

omfggggggggg thank you soooooo much to gkjaylee, a truly beautiful human being, for getting this signed for me at ECCC!! and I know you didn’t ask, but I wish I could give you something in return omg. I can crochet???? and draw (kinda haha) so if you ever want something made, hit me up. I’d be more than happy to.

Do you have any tips for new cosplayers? It's something I've been wanting to try for so long but I have such image issues and I definitely do not look like a comic character. Every time I want to start it up I end up getting discouraged. Any words of wisdom would be extremely helpful!

I totally understand what you mean. However I do not look like half of the characters I cosplay so don’t worry about it! :D

‘don’t worry about it’ = easier said than done though and I recognize this.

1. Cosplay a character you know and love. Definitely do one of your all time favorites, no matter what they look like.  The fact that you love this character will help motivate you to keep trying, even when the costume is frustrating to work on.
2. Cosplay with friends. Even if their costumes don’t 'match’ yours by being from the same universe, have someone you will be going to the con with just to hang out & have fun. It definitely helps keep you from being stressed out. Having a Bucky to your Cap is always a plus though :)
3. Give yourself enough time to finish it. Like 6 months worth even. Don’t start a new costume a week before the con!
4. Practice new techniques with cheap materials, don’t use the fancy stuff you bought for your costume until you know exactly what you’re doing.

What exactly is discouraging you? Are you choosing a costume that is too advanced or difficult?

Thank you so much for all this advice, I’m going to do it! And I want to cosplay for myself I’m just afraid I’ll get torn down by people.

You’re welcome. Good! The truth is, you could have the most amazing, accurate, gorgeous costume ever, and people will still try to tear you down for no good reason. Key word here is ‘try’. You don’t have to let them. In fact, you really shouldn’t. Never let someone else steal your joy. Their negativity has nothing to do with you, it’s their problem. You just make your costume & have a good time. *hugs*
