He is a reference to the German saying “ein Vogel haben” or “to have a bird”
This saying means that someone acts stupidly and without thought– not that Prussia is stupid, don’t get me wrong– he just acts rashly and quickly, like a bird hopping about and chattering away.
An expansion of this phrase that my Uncle taught me is that someone who is truly insane has a bird on their head, and will be an interesting character, while someone with a bird on their shoulder acknowledges that he is insane, but isn’t actually- an attention-seeker, essentially.
I don’t think Gilbert even knows that Gilbird is there, and ignores him, sitting wherever. Sometimes he looks to the side and sees a flash of yellow feathers, but he’s hallucinating, confused.
When I roleplay as Prussia, I do not ever acknowledge Gilbird simply because pets really aren’t that important. //shrugs//
