Abraham Lincoln’s pocket watch had an inscription inside of it, that he didn’t even know about. A watchmaker was fixing Abe’s pocket watch when the news of the attack on Fort Sumter reached Washington, D.C.

The watchmaker unscrewed the pocket watch and used a sharp instrument to write inside of it.  He wrote

“‘Jonathan Dillon

April 13-1861
Fort Sumpter [sic] was attacked by the rebels on the above date J Dillon
April 13-1861
Washington Thank God we have a government
Jonth Dillon”

Abe Lincoln never knew of this, in fact no one but the watchmaker knew exactly what was written in that watch until 150 years later.
