Ewan McGregor to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode VIII?

Recent rumors have indicated that Ewan McGregor is in talks to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode VIII. This would mark his first return to the character since playing him in Episodes I-III from 1999 to 2005.

This wouldn’t be McGregor’s first involvement in the Sequel Trilogy; he had a cameo role as Obi-Wan’s voice in The Force Awakens during Rey’s vision sequence, shared with archival voicing by the late Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan in episodes IV-VI from 1977 to 1982.

It is likely that if this rumor is true, Obi-Wan will be appearing as a force ghost. After all, [VII spoilers ahead] Luke had to have had some company for all those years, and thus in the image above we have mocked up Obi-Wan’s force ghost at the ‘Jedi Steps’ shooting location of the Episode VII ending, the Skellig Islands.

[end VII spoilers]

As Ewan McGregor has aged since his last appearance as Obi-Wan, it shouldn’t be too hard for the excellent makeup and VFX teams from Episode VII to give him the touch-ups needed to bridge the gap from Obi-Wan’s Prequel Trilogy appearance to his Original Trilogy appearance– although the likeness is already striking and it’s unlikely much would need to be done in the way of adjustments.

Also intriguing is the possibility that this could pave the way for an Obi-Wan anthology film, which by Rogue One’s naming convention would likely be titled Kenobi: A Star Wars Story. Since everything post the Han Solo spin-off in 2018 and Episode IX in 2019 is up in the air, it’s possible that this hypothetical movie could be released in December 2020, starring Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan in his years between Episodes III and IV. The story possibilities are endless!
