When Howl says "chip off the old block", what does he even mean? I always sort of assumed it had to do with sculpting or woodworking or something but that probably doesn't make sense.

I’ve reasoned that it’s some sort of saying, meaning that someone resembles their parent - since in the version I’ve read he says (something along the lines) “What an ugly kid, he takes after his father”
