Jason Dohring plays Logan so well. I find myself always watching the little things he do, particularly his hand gestures, xD. But he is most compelling when he’s playing Logan in scenes with Harry Hamlin’s Aaron.

It’s quite fascinating really. The way Jason chooses to hunch Logan’s shoulders down, lowering his head, curling in like a turtle. It’s so striking to me how Jason literally makes Logan physically smaller when in Aaron’s presence, subtly coiling inward or cowering.

And then you see a difference after his mother dies, and Logan doesn’t give as much a fuck. Jason plays Logan standing taller, shoulders more out and forward, and you realize that he’s actually bigger than Aaron.

I mean, there’s no doubt that Logan must have been an incredibly strong kid. The tenacity he has. If he hadn’t been, he would have been dead a long time ago. I think if circumstances had been different (but with his mother still dead), Logan would probably someday have thrown off the reigns his father had on him after all the years of abuse.

I just love the way JD plays it.

I’ve been rewatching Veronica Mars for obvious reasons. I’m on 1x06 - Return of the Kane, with the subplot where Logan gets busted for his illegal fighting thing. And, maybe I’m just slow, but the subtext of a certain scene just hit me.

This is the scene where Aaron has brought Logan to the same gas station where Logan tried to hire the veteran washing windows. Aaron’s on the phone discussing a contract when at one point he says to Logan, “Son, how do you argue with 8 figures? You can’t. It can’t be done.” He goes back to the phone, and a few seconds later, the vet who turned down Logan’s offer leans over and says, “Hey, you find some sucker who’s willing to make a bitch out of themself for cash?"

Aaron gets back in the car, and they head off to the homeless shelter. The music starts, and we get a long shot of Logan glaring at his dad.

See the parallels? The clear implication is that Aaron is no different from the "suckers” Logan got to fight each other – Aaron just gets paid more. And I think this gives a lot of insight to Logan’s motivations – like he was  organizing the fights to spite his father from the start.

The music, by the way, segues straight through the scene at the shelter to Logan choosing a belt for Aaron to beat him with. So I think the fact that it starts right about at the point of this glare / when this parallel is made is actually pretty significant, because it’s connecting what happens here with all the stuff afterwards.
