You really got to see Chico’s evolution as an actor throughout the Marx Brothers films. He started off a bit stone faced (though always funny) in Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers, and then by Night at the Opera and Day at the Races, he was charmingly holding his own as the loyal friend of the romantic leads. Groucho never seemed as comfortable playing it straight. So hats off to you, Chico Marx, and happy 130th birthday!
The fact that Chico and Harpo are over 40 here (The Cocoanuts, 1929) baffles me. They look so young and adorable… then again, they were almost 60 in A Night in Casablanca and I can’t quite believe that either.
