Unexpected Gift Ch. 10

Chapter 10

“Dinah!” Lauren called helplessly into the packed room where her parents and the girls were. Usually, they only allowed four people in the room as labor progresses, but the hospital made an exception as to not draw attention into the waiting room.

They had placed Lauren in a private hospital room on the more secluded side of the birthing level, and both she and Dinah were really grateful for it. Sure, it wasn’t the hospital room they were planning on getting, as there is an actual floor specifically for special cases, such as celebrities, but this was the next best thing.

“I’m right here, baby.” Dinah reassured, taking her seat beside Lauren’s bed and grabbing her hand. “I’m right here.”

“It hurts so much.” Lauren cried breathlessly. Her contractions were about 11 minutes apart, and her cervix not even 2 centimeters dilated. Dr. Klotz had warned them that the labor could take days from here on out, and from the way it was looking, Lauren would have to stick it out.

“I know, baby.” Dinah sighed, leaning forward to rest her forehead against Lauren’s. The tears hadn’t stopped falling from Lauren’s eyes since they’d induced her labor, and the emotions were getting to Dinah as well. “You’re doing so amazing.”

“You really are, mija.” Clara coached, moving to the other side of her daughter and pressing her fingers into Lauren’s lower back. “Just try to think about how much you’re going to love him when he’s finally here. He’s going to be here really soon, and you’ll know that all of this was worth it.”

“He’s worth it.” Lauren nodded, sniffling to stop the tears.

“He is, Lo.” Dinah let out a teary chuckle. “Our son is going to be here in just a little while.”

Camila stood from her seat and made her way over to the end of Lauren’s bed, leaving Ally, Normani, and Mike sitting in the chairs on the opposite side of the room. They tried their hardest to stay out of the way.

“Lolo, do you want anything from downstairs? Ice chips? Ice cream?” The young Cuban asked softly.

Lauren shook her head quickly and just as she went to speak, a contraction ripped through her once more. “OW, FUCK!”

Dinah allowed Lauren to grip onto her hands tightly while Clara reminded the girl to breathe steadily. The pain was searing only because the girl refused to have her epidural before she was over 6 centimeters dilated as it could potentially hurt her son.

Ally and Normani watched with wide eyes as Lauren’s face contorted in pain while Camila stumbled back to her seat with tears in her own eyes.

“I’ve never seen her in pain before.” Ally shook her head. “I don’t like this.”

The girls heard a soft sniffle from beside them and turned to see Mike with tears in his eyes. All three women cooed and surrounded the large man, cuddling him tightly.

“That’s my babygirl.” Mike shrugged. “She’s in all this pain, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“Don’t worry, Papa J.” Normani rubbed his arm. “She’s strong, and before you know it your grandson will be here.”

The thought made Mike’s tears swell even more. “My grandson…”

“Oh, Papa J! Don’t do this to us.” Ally pouted, wrapping her arms around the man. “You’re such a sap.”

“I know.” Mike chuckled. He glanced at the bed where Lauren was recovering from her contraction. She breathed in and out a few times while Dinah whispered something to here while running her hands over her face to wipe the sweat away. Lauren let a small smile grace her face before pressing a peck to Dinah’s lips.

“Babe, you need to get the epidural.” Dinah pressed to her girlfriend who had just gotten through what had to be the fiftieth contraction. Lauren had been in labor for almost 10 hours, and the sun was peeking out over the buildings outside their window. Clara and Mike had gone down to the cafeteria to get some breakfast and the girls were passed out in the corner of the room.

“No.” Lauren breathed, her eyes dropping from exhaustion. “I haven’t moved from two centimeters and I said six centimeters.”

“Lauren, you’re in too much pain and you’re labor isn’t progressing! You know that Dr. Klots said that this could last days. What are you going to do? Not sleep for days?”

“I will not put this baby at risk.” Lauren glared at Dinah through tired eyes. “Getting an epidural when not completely necessary can cause intracranial hemorrhages, a decrease in fetal heartbeat, an increased risk for SIDS, and displacement of his skull. I will not put my son at risk for all that shit because you do want to deal with me right now. If that’s how you feel, you can go sit over there with the girls and I’ll do this on my own.”

Dinah’s face softened. “Of course I don’t want that, Lo. I just want both of you to be healthy.” She sighed, lowering her head to rest on Lauren’s shoulder. “I won’t be able to move on if something happens to one of you.”

Lauren shook her head. “No, don’t say that. Just think about how amazing our son is going to be when he’s finally here.” `

A knock sounded through the room before Dr. Klotz poked his head into the room. “Hello, mommies. Just here to check for progression.”

“It hasn’t moved.” Lauren shook her head. “I’m almost positive.” Lauren sighed, laying back on the pillows behind her in exhaustion.

Dr. Klotz gave an amused chuckle before walking over to the bed and lifting the blankets. “Have you changed your mind about the epidural?” he asked while checking the woman’s cervix.

“No, she’s being difficult.” Dinah gave an exhausted sigh.

“I’m not being difficult. I just don’t want to put my baby in harm’s way.”

Dr. Klotz nodded before pulling his fingers out. “Well, okay. You actually did move a little. You’re at about 2 and a half centimeters, but it’s still a long way to go. I would say this labor could last a few days, Lauren.”

Lauren let another sigh fall from her lips before throwing arm over her eyes to hide the tears that were stinging her eyes. Dinah grabbed her free hand and gave it a squeeze before looking at Dr. Klotz. “Is there anything we can do to speed it up?”

“Um, you could try being a little active. Walk around the hospital a little or something, but that’s about it. Ice chips can really help with the pain and discomfort.”

“Ice isn’t going to fucking help me!” Lauren snapped through her tears. “Not like you would know. You don’t have a fucking uterus. Neither one of you do.”

Dinah rolled her eyes at the woman’s attitude. It was nothing she wasn’t used to from dealing with Lauren throughout the whole pregnancy, but yelling at the doctor wasn’t going to help.

“I’m sorry.” Dinah told the middle-aged doctor.

“It’s alright.” Dr. Klotz chuckled. “I’m completely used to it. Lauren, you’re right I don’t understand, but I’ve delivered dozens of babies. It’s always harder for first time mothers, so this isn’t uncommon.”

“Oh, shut up! I don’t want to be a part of your statistics.” Lauren waved him off. “Come back when you have good news.”

Dr. Klotz laughed at the demand. “Alright. I’ll see you ladies in an hour.” As he exited the room, Lauren stuck her tongue out at him.

“I’ll see you in an hour.” Lauren mocked in a whiny voice.

“Where did my mature girlfriend go?” Dinah laughed.

Lauren’s sour mood didn’t dull down until late afternoon that day. She was now nearly five centimeters dilated with her contractions just over nine minutes apart, and she was way too tired to be snappy with people. She’d been in labor for nearly 24 hours, and to say it was exhausting was an understatement.

“Baby, are you hungry?” Dinah asked softly to her girlfriend who had taken to laying on her side with a pillow over her head.

“Mmmm.” Lauren groaned.

“Lauren, mama, come on. You haven’t eaten in a long time.” Ally stated softly, moving to stand near the end of the bed. “You need to eat for the baby.”

Laure poked her head out of the pillow to glare at Ally. “I’m exhausted and my vagina hurts. I really don’t feel like eating.”

Camila sighed from her seat on the couch. “If you don’t eat something, I’m telling the nurse to come hook you up to a nourishment machine.”

“Ughhhhhh.” Lauren groaned. “Fine.”

“What do you want to eat?” Dinah asked eagerly, happy that Lauren was finally going to eat something. “I can go get it for you.”

“Anything soft.” Lauren explained. “Maybe soup or something.”

“I can do that.” Dinah nodded and stood from her seat. “I’ll be back in a little while. Try not to have him while I’m gone.” She joked, pressing a kiss to Lauren’s swollen belly before pecking her lips.

“Trust me, he’s not coming any time soon.”

Normani snickered from her spot on the couch beside Camila. “Apparently neither is Dinah.”

“Shut up, Mani.” Ally, Lauren, and Dinah stated with a glare to the dark-skinned girl making her laugh even harder.

“Oh, god, please tell me I’m almost at six centimeters.” Lauren begged with tears in her eyes again as Dr. Klotz checked her cervix again. Clara gave the man a sympathetic look as she pushed Lauren’s sweat soaked hair out of her face. “If not, just give me the damn epidural! I really don’t give a fuck anymore!”

“Lauren…” Mike warned.

“Daddy, I love you, but you don’t get to yell at me right now. You didn’t have to go through this.”

Clara laughed at her daughter’s remark. “Mike, why don’t you go take a nap with Dinah?” Clara nodded to Dinah who was sleeping in the arm chair in the corner.

Mike rolled his eyes and turned to Dr. Klotz. “How much, Doc?”

“She’s at six and a half.” Dr. Klotz said proudly. “We can all breathe.”

“Oh, thank god.” Lauren sighed in relief. “30 hours later.”

“So I take it you want the nurse to prep the epidural?”

“YES!” Every occupant in the room shouted making the doctor laugh.

“Alright, I’ll send the nurse in.”

As the doctor walked away, Lauren turned to cuddling into her mother. “Mommy, it hurts so much.”

Clara felt her heart contract at the sound of her daughter’s pain. “I know, but you’re about to get the epidural and then you can sleep for a few hours before you have to start pushing.”

“Thank god.” Lauren repeated. “Can the nurse hurry the hell up?!”

Dinah watched with a blank face and refreshed eyes as Lauren slept peacefully in her hospital bed. With the epidural, Lauren was able to finally be free from the pain and it allowed her to pass out directly after it kicked in.

Not only was Lauren finally asleep, but the room was quiet due to the lack of people occupying it. They’d decided to head to their respective homes to shower and be ready for the birth, which Dinah was grateful for.

Dinah glanced at the screen monitoring Lauren’s contractions and sighed in relief as another contraction hit and Lauren still slept peacefully. Seeing the woman in pain had been the hardest thing Dinah had ever had to witness, and it relieved her to know that she’d get a break from it until she’d have to witness her son being born.

The sound of her phone buzzing broke her out of her thoughts. She pulled the slim phone out of her pocket and saw her mother’s contact photo flash across the screen. “Hey, Ma.”

Dinah, how is she?” Milika asked immediately. Dinah could hear the hustle and bustle of the airport through the phone.

Dinah sighed and looked at her girlfriend again. “She’s doing well. She’s at seven centimeters, so Dr. K says that it should happen within the next couple hours.”

Did she get the epidural?”

Dinah nodded, looking at the monitor again. “Yeah. She’s taking to it really well and no she’s asleep.”

Milika sighed through the phone. “That’s great, DJ, but I have something to tell you.”

“What, Mom?” Dinah asked nervously.

There’s a really bad thunderstorm here, and they’re not letting in planes leave LAX today.” Milika stated sadly.

“What? Mom, you were already supposed to be here! Omar comes in a few hours.” Dinah exclaimed into the phone, her heart dropping at the thought of not having her mother there for the birth of her son.

I know, Dinah, but what am I supposed to do? I can’t just appear over there.”

Dinah felt the tears well up in her eyes. “Mommy, you’re gonna miss him. I need you here.” She sniffled.

No, you don’t. This is your son, okay? You’re going to be a great mom, so you need to be strong and welcome your son into the world with a big smile. He’s coming for you and Lauren, not for me. Don’t let one little thing ruin the most amazing day of your life. Trust me, I know.”

Dinah nodded and wiped her eyes with a sniffle. “You’re right. When will you be here?”

I should be there tomorrow afternoon at the latest. Save some cuddles for me, okay?

“Alright.” Dinah gave a watery laugh. “Be safe.”

I will. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

And, Dinah?”

Congratulations, mommy.”

“Thank you, Ma.”

Dinah ended the phone call and looked up at Lauren who was staring back at her with sleepy eyes. “She’s not coming?”

Dinah shook her head. “She won’t be here until tomorrow afternoon.”

Lauren gave Dinah a sad smile. “I’m sorry, baby.”

“It’s okay.” Dinah shook her head. “I can’t wait to meet him.” She reached over and rested her hands on Lauren’s belly.

Lauren scooted over and motioned for Dinah to join her in bed. Dinah joined her immediately, wrapping her arms around her two favorite people and allowing Lauren to fall back asleep in her arms.

Normani flew out of her seat to find Dr. Klotz while Ally and Dinah tried their best to calm Lauren down. Clara was down at the bottom of the bed with Lauren’s nurse watching the baby crown.

“Okay, I need every person except the other mother and the grandmother out of the room.” The nurse announced.

“No, Ally can stay. She’s the godmother.” Dinah told the nurse. Ally nodded and thanks to Dinah and grabbed Lauren’s reaching hand.

Camila stayed frozen in her spot, staring at Lauren’s crotch with wide eyes. “Oh, my god…” her face turning a slight green.

“Get out, Mila!” Ally called to the sickly looking girl. Camila nodded her head, grateful for the excuse to leave and went to find somewhere where she could sit silently and get the image of Lauren’s crotch out of her head.

Dr. Klotz strolled in seconds later with a slightly terrified look on his face. “Hello, mommies! I’ve gotten quite a few warnings about what’s going on in here, but I think it’s time to start pushing?”

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

Dr. Klotz took the nurse’s place and gently pressed on the skin around the crowning head. “Wow, he’s got a very large head.”

“YOU THINK I DON’T FUCKING KNOW THAT?” Lauren screeched as another contraction applied more pressure to her hipbones. “CAN WE JUST GET HIM OUT?!”

“Alright, Ms. Hansen, could you please grab this leg for me?” Dr. Klotz tapped Lauren’s left leg. “Ms. Godmom could you grab that one?”

Dinah and Ally both grabbed their assigned leg allowing the doctor more room to see. “Alright, we’re gonna start pushing on your next contraction. If you cooperate correctly, this can be over in fifteen minutes. He’s right here, okay?”

Lauren breathed harshly through the pain. “I’m so tired.”

“No, Lauren. You have to do this.” Clara warned. “He can’t stay like this too long.”

“Mommy, it hurts.” Lauren cried.

Dinah pressed a kiss to Lauren’s forehead. “You can do it, baby. You’re doing such a great job.”

“And PUSH!”

Lauren pushed down with all her might as the pain flooded through her body. “UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH!”

“You’re doing great, Lauren! That’s a great push.” Dr. Klotz nodded with a thumbs up. “…8…9…10. And relax.”

Lauren took a deep breath after the contraction was done and felt the overwhelming exhaustion hit her. “Oh, my god.” She panted.

“You’re doing great, baby.” Dinah reassured her.

“No, I can’t do it.”

“Yes you can, mama!” Ally cheered. “Just remember, a few more pushes and you can meet Omar.”

“Omar…” Lauren said to herself. She’d get to meet her baby.

“Just a few more pushes just like that, and he’ll be here, Mija.” Clara repeated.

Over the next fourty-five minutes, Lauren pushed and pushed and pushed until Omar’s head was finally out and she’d have to start on his shoulders.

“Okay, one more really hard push and he’ll be here!”

Lauren sat back on the bed with sweat pouring down her face and body while shaking her head. “No. I can’t do it anymore. I’m so tired.”

“Lauren, you have to.” Dinah reminded. “He’s almost here, baby. Just one more push like before and he’ll be here.”

“Lauren, just one more. I promise it’ll be worth it.”

As the next contraction came in, Lauren pushed with all her might before she felt all the pressure from below disappear.

Dr. Klotz placed the baby on Lauren’s chest just below her chin. Lauren teared up at the sight of her son. He was finally here.

“Hi.” She whispered in a raspy voice. “I’m your mommy, Omar.” She sniffled.

Dinah watched on with tears running down her face along with Clara and Ally. Her son was finally here.

Omar was finally here.

Once Lauren was finally able to shower with the help of her nurse and her mom she felt much better and refreshed, and all she wanted to do was spend more time with her son.

When she was brought back out into the room, she found Dinah holding Omar in her arms and staring at him intently. The look of awe in her eyes was enough to bring a fresh round of tears to Lauren’s eyes.

“Oh, my goodness, if I don’t stop crying.” Lauren sniffled.

Dinah looked up from her son and laughed at her girlfriend. “It’s alright. Come get some sleep. Omar is already knocked out.”

“Not for long.” Lauren sang, slowly climbing back into back with the help of her nurse. “He’s gonna be up in a couple of hours to eat.”

“I can’t wait.” Dinah smiled.

“Me either.” Lauren smiled back. “Can you believe it?”

“Believe what?” Dinah asked, looking back at her son.

“We’re mommies…”

“That we are.”

And she sealed the statement with a kiss.
