ghosts never sleep

Tony Goldwyn-Ghosts Never Sleep - Full Movie

Canst thou, O partial sleep, give thy repose
To the wet sea-boy in an hour so rude,
And in the calmest and most stillest night,
With all appliances and means to boot,
Deny it to a king? Then happy low, lie down!
Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.

Footsteps In The Hall

Okay, so when I was in my early teens, my parents divorced and we moved to this old brick farmhouse. It was predictably drafty and creaky, and I never felt altogether comfortable there alone. I often had trouble sleeping, and so did my brother.

My bedroom had two doors, one near the top of the stairs, and the other at the end of a hall that turned a corner and led to my brother’s bedroom. I usually kept the one by the stairs locked because it had a tendency to open by itself and I hate sleeping with the door open. My bed was across from the other door, which behaved itself and stayed closed.

So this one night, I couldn’t sleep, and my little bro clearly couldn’t either, because I could hear him pacing up and down the hall outside my room. I felt bad for the kid, we’d been having a rough month, but we had school in the morning and I was tired.

“Bro,” I called out quietly. “It’s late. Pacing isn’t going to help you sleep, just go back to bed, okay?”

No answer. I figured he didn’t hear me, though I could still hear him walking along the hallway. Up and down. Up and down.

“Seriously,” I called a little louder. “I’m tired and I wanna sleep. We’ve got school in the morning, just go to bed!”

Still no reply, but the footsteps stopped by the far door. I heard the knob rattle. I sat up in bed.

“Oh come on!” I all but yelled. “I’m not in the mood for games, damnit, just go to bed and go to sleep!”

My head whipped around so fast my neck cracked.

There was my brother, standing in the doorway across from my bed, hugging his stuffed dog and yawning.

“Sis, why are you yelling?”

A sick feeling crept up from my stomach.

I heard the footsteps coming back along the hall, far too heavy to be a child’s. Toward my brother. Toward the open door.

Quick as a flash, I jumped out of bed, pulled my brother into the room, slammed the door, and locked it. My brother was confused for a minute until the knob started to rattle and turn. He helped me push my desk in front of that door, and a footlocker against the far one.

We sat huddled on my bed, eyes tracking along the wall as the footsteps continued along the hallway. Up and down. Up and down.

Suffice it to say, neither of us slept. The noises didn’t stop until dawn.
