There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams - not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.

In honor of the 90th anniversary of the original publication of  F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.

“In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

Okay, maybe I’m alone in this, but I always got the feeling that Lewis’s ghostly heart was something unique to his ghost in particular.  Like, not every ghost would have one, but Lewis does because he died feeling very strongly about love.

Maybe it’s because of that one sequence in the video, the bit where Lewis’s eyes light up and then we get the close-ups on his heart and his head as it lights up with his hair.  Since the second close-up is on something that identifies Lewis as Lewis, I guess I figured the first close-up on the heart served a similar purpose.

Close-up shots are used very specifically in film to get the viewers to notice something in particular.  It’s the filmmaker’s way of POINTING EMPHATICALLY at a small detail, and so I took the close-up on the heart as basically meaning “HEY LOOK AT THIS HEART; THE FACT THAT HE HAS THIS PULSING, BEATING HEART ON HIS LAPEL IS SUPER-DUPER IMPORTANT TO THE STORY."  And sure, we didn’t see any other ghosts in the video so we can’t know for sure if it’s something that’s really unique to Lewis, but the fact that it was pointed out by the framing makes it feel like it IS a detail unique to the character, you know?

I dunno.  Maybe it’s just me, but if I were to design a ghost character for the Mystery Skulls: Ghost universe, I’d probably leave out the heart motif.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the designs the other fans have come up with for their own characters, but that’s just how I see it. :P
