I thought I’d write a bit about the ‘scene’ as it were, so maybe some people understand this blog/zine and why it exists.
“Do I have to read your bullshit about this stuff?” Of course not. I’m writing more for me than anyone else.
On Friday night I went to watch Speedboat Salesman/Yachts/Summo/Sunday League/Wrestling at the Central in Gateshead. I took my friend Damien, who isn’t really involved in DIY music at all.
We were separated during the Sunday League set so I couldn’t really gauge how he was responding to the gig, but I found him afterwards. His eyes were wide and he had this funny grin on his face. “That was the best set I’ve ever seen.” he said. And, to his credit, it was a fucking good set. It was a fucking good set in a series of fucking good sets. Every band on that line-up put on a really honest and passionate show. There was no careerism, just nice people pouring out their souls for people to connect with.
I have the good fortune to know people in most of the bands that played that night. People like Chris Lafferty (and I really hope he won’t mind me talking about him, I haven’t OK’d this *uncomfortable laughter*) who organised the show. I don’t want to assume too much about Chris. I know him well, but I don’t want to put words into his mouth, however I’m pretty fucking sure he puts shows on, plays in Sunday League and runs getintoit for little/no money because he believes in these things: The power of music to move, to inform and to say, when there’s no hope, “it’s OK, there will always be this and it’s honest.”
He can obviously correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I’m far off.
Because of people like Chris, bands like Sunday League, Summo, Wrestling, Yachts etc. and pretty much every band I’ve had the pleasure of talking to as part of this project, I have so much love for this 'scene’/'movement’ or whatever label you want to stick on it.
There’s always beef and people who don’t get along everywhere, and you know, that’s not ideal. But generally; what a nice bunch of guys and girls!
This may have been dull or corny to read, it probably isn’t the most well written piece ever… and if thats how you feel, that’s cool. I don’t care.
