Energy Tethers 101

Updated (again): 04.28.17

*this post is fueled by angst*

Okay, no, seriously though, it really does make me sad that so many people seemed to have no idea what I was talking about when it comes to connecting things for energy transfer.

So, what even is an energy tether?

I personally use the term “energy tether” to describe this type of energy work, but they could be called anything - energy cords, energy feeds, etc. Basically, it’s a metaphysical connection to allow a direct and continuous flow of energy from a source into a target. And I say target, because it doesn’t need to be an inanimate object - it’s possible to do this with yourself too.

That sounds a little convoluted, Richtor; can you break it down a bit more?

Yes, I know, I’m fancy with my words. You’re creating an energetic line between two things, one thing to be used as a battery, to allow energy to constantly flow from the battery into the second thing, keeping it charged / powered forever.

Are you serious?

Yes.

Why don’t we do this for everything in magic?

Honestly, I don’t know. If you’ve got an understanding of energy work and visualization, it really isn’t even that hard to create one. It can even be done with representational magic if you really wanna go that far, but it’s not that complex when you get down to it.

I’m assuming it’s just a case of, people don’t think about it like that, or, it wasn’t as widespread a thing as I thought it was.

Can’t we just do this with passive charging, like how we charge things in moonlight?

Yes, but objects only hold a limited amount of energy before they become full; once you’ve used up the energy, you need to recharge it again. Creating an energy tether allows a constant flow of energy, so as it is being used up by your intent or goal, it just refills itself.

To me, passive charging is no guarantee that the energy will stick or be absorbed by the object, and that is also why I prefer things that require focusing on the energy yourself (direct channeling), or this method.

What *can* you use energy tethers for, anyway?

Basically anything you want to keep charged for extended periods of time. Optimal for sigils, any sort of charms - hell, you can even connect thoughtforms / servitors this way. But, seriously, anything you want to keep constantly charged with minimal effort, this is a way to do it.

What can you use for “batteries” or power sources?

Anything that produces an almost endless amount of energy. The sun is the first and most obvious one I think of. You can use anything else that produces a lot of energy, though. If you live near a dam, or those electricity windmills, those would work. Power lines and electric generators are awesome, and a great way to incorporate different feels of energy (and tech magic) into your practice. Space, even; like, the entire damn thing. If it produces energy, it can be tethered.

What do you mean about different feels of energy?

This isn’t specific to tethers - all things that have and produce energy have different “feels” to them. The sun is more hot and energetic than the moon, which is cool and calming. Rose quartz is a bit more gentle than, say, jasper, which is hot and fire-y. Tiger’s eye is more solid and stable than clear quartz, which is fluid and mold-able to almost any intent.

We all experience feels of energy differently, however; these are just how I “energetically feel” those things.

(You also don’t need to “feel” anything to still do energy work, but that’s like a  whole ‘nother post.)

Can you tether to something that doesn’t have unlimited energy?

Sure, yeah, but you’ll drain it, and then it won’t be fulfilling its purpose anymore.

So, you could use yourself as a power source?

You could, but it’s super draining and I wouldn’t recommend it. That object would constantly be taking your energy away from you, and it could have bad consequences, including physical ones - physical exhaustion is a side effect that can occur when you use too much of your energy, and I see it happen often to people who are not careful about their energy expenditure.

However.

You can create switches for your tethers. As in, you can cinch them, close them off, to stop the flow of energy. Like you can turn on a pipe to get water flowing, then shut it off just as easily - you could create a “modification” for a tether similar in that manner.

Can these energy lines be broken?

Yep, absolutely. You can do it yourself if you no longer want them, someone else could do it if they could sense them, or they can naturally fade over time if you don’t give them proper upkeep and care.

Wait, upkeep? What happened to endless energy?

Yes, upkeep. You’re creating something to funnel energy, with energy. Energy needs to constantly be molded and kept in shape, or else it tends to just drift away. It really isn’t that hard to upkeep, though.

How do you keep your energy tethers safe from other people?

Just program that into them when you make them.

Any disadvantages to using an energy tether?

It depends on how you view the term disadvantage.

I think the thing that energy tethers lack is that bit of personalization that we often talk about being important in witchcraft. For example, you can keep a thoughtform powered by the sun, but it won’t contain your energy, won’t be as personally tied to you as if you charged it with your own energies. That can lose a lot of impact, when you really think about it, especially considering the nature of thoughtforms and the like.

Not to mention, you can overwhelm yourself with energy if you use a tether to connect yourself to an external source that produces more than your body can handle. You know how you can be overwhelmed by external energies, just by walking around? Yeah, now imagine that pumping straight into your body without a natural exit channel. Not fun.

Are there any other applications for energy tethers?

Fuck yeah. Use them to draw energy out of a target, in the form of a curse - literally sap their energies away so they have none left for their daily lives.

You can even connect yourself and another person with energy tethers, if you want to be able to share energy more freely and with more ease. (This is basically what I did with @ashesforeverashes, in a sense.)

Some people don’t like their energies taken without consent, though, and certain witchy protections can even prevent these sorts of tethers from forming in the first place, so keep that in mind.

Okay, all this talk about tethers, are you gonna show us how to make them?

Only if you ask nicely.

Please?

Okay that’s better.

It is essentially just a combination of energy work, intent, and visualization.

The first thing you need to do, is have an object you want charged.

Now, pick an energy source. You don’t need to be able to see it, but it can help.

Relax yourself, clear your mind if you can. Hold onto your object in your hands.

If you can, look at your energy source; this is clearly not applicable with the sun, so close your eyes and have your face turned toward it. If you can’t see your energy source, picture it in your mind as clearly as you can. Try to get a feel for its energy as well as you can, too.

Once you are confident with your source, imagine a cord connecting from it and to your object you want to keep charged. A nice visualization for this would be seeing the particles form together out of thin air to form your tether - literally materializing out of nothing and attaching to the source, creating a line that is slowly building down from the source and to your object. This can be done in whatever way you wish - just make it.

Take as long as you need to allow the cord to be build from your energy source to the target - it can take some time, depending on the distance and how experienced you are with energy work.

While you are creating it, focus on any attributes you want it to have - a thick cord that is hard to break, a shimmery appearance so no other magic users can see it, etc. Keep in mind the purpose of the cord, what you want it to do, how you want it to behave, and fuse that into it as it is being formed. If you wish to incorporate a switch, in order to turn on and off the flow of energy, now would be the time to do so - more visualization and intent, and declarations of “I can halt this flow of energy whenever I desire” should do the trick.

Once the cord is in place, you want to draw energy from your source and into the object, through the tether. Make it clear that energy only flows one way through this particular tether. Continue to draw from the energy source and down into the target, until you begin to feel the energy flowing through the tether naturally. Once energy is accumulating into the object on its own, you know the tether is complete.

For the upkeep; about once a week or so, focus on the tether and visualize it still being strong, without any gaps for energy to sift through. See a smooth, clean flow of energy from your energy source and into the target. If there are any obstructions, break them down and funnel them out.

What was this “representational magic” method you mentioned?

Oh yeah.

As a boost, you can have a representation of your energy source physically attached to the object or target, if you can. So, for example, you could have a tiny model of the sun, connected to the physical vessel for a thoughtform, by a piece of string. This can help keep the energy tether strengthened in a “physical” aspect, especially if you bind the physical to the energetic. Not to mention, just looking at it, you are reaffirmed that the tether is there and the object is charged, and that can assist with the upkeep.

Are there any “modifications” for energy tethers?

Totally. You can change the “material” you make the tether out of. Think of how people can put spikes onto personal shields, or make them have reflective surfaces - it’s sort of like that, but moreso changing the tether itself into something besides a beam of light. It can be a black cord like the ones electronics use; it can be made out of natural rope or hemp; it can be just a metal pipe that the energy slides through. Try to think about how each “material” might impact the flow and/or feel of energy.

You can also have one tether break off and charge many items at once - you don’t need a separate tether for each thing. Just focus on your tether and how it can fork, and imagine another branch coming from it naturally. Or, if you’re adding a separate line after the original tether has been “installed,” imagine a separate line growing or being molded from the first and down to the new object.

And there you have it - my post on energy tethers. Obviously this isn’t complete or all encompassing. This is just my view on these energetic cords, what they are, and how they can be made and used. I wrote this off the seat of my pants, but I think I covered everything I intended to. (And it feels hardcore like the old windvexer posts to me, which I’m not bothered by lol.)

I hope this helps you guys, or inspires you, or whatever. If you have any more questions, I… guess I can open my ask box, as long as y’all behave. Good luck, and have fun!

TIPS FOR THE MARKIPLIER TOUR FROM SOMEONE WHO WENT TO THE LAST ONE

1) have all your info ready and the page up before the they go on sale to get a good spot. Such as email, your address if you want physical tickets, credit card info.

2) research the theater to figure out where it is and maybe even which row to get tickets for

3) The merch line before hand is pretty clear but if the opening starts while you’re still in line you might be screwed. It’s hard to hear the announcements over the screaming but dimming light mean get to your seat now.

4) Be considerate when taking photos. It can be kinda dark but the stage lights are enough for pictures. Don’t use flash.

Also do not hold your phone way up, people behind you want to be able to see

5) Mind the paddles. Last time there were voting paddles, dont wave these randomly in the air, it makes it hard for others to see

6) Don’t bring gifts for the team. Last time they asked people not to because they are traveling in limited space.

7) Be nice to Amy and Katherine. Last time these lovely ladies went into the audience to hold mics for a QnA at the end. Be nice to them, they’re both very sweet and are helping out. Do not shout or grab at them.

8)STAY IN YOUR SEAT! Do not randomly stand up for no reason. You can stand when they’re asking for volunteers and such, but not randomly to shout things. If you need to leave try and stay low to not disturb others.

9) ASK APPROPRIATE QUESTIONS! there are younger people in the audience, i saw some very young kids like 8 or 9. Also people may have their parents there.

10) Dont bring big signs. it makes it impossible for people to see

11) Just be nice

How to Meet Local Spirits

(Revamp of my answer to this ask [x])

Local spirits are the spirits that are constantly around us, in the forests, on the beaches, in schools, in homes, etc. They can be ghosts, mythological creatures, entities never mentioned in lore before and more. Their personalities and friendliness towards humans can vary quite a bit, especially depending on where you live. Think of them as your spirit neighbors. Some might remain as such for the entire time that you know them, others might become your companions or maybe even your rivals! The important thing is that you respectfully interact with them and be aware of their boundaries.

There’s two main ways that I’ve found to make contact with local spirits: call them to you or go outside and meet them in the places they live. Calling them to you is actually kind of a similar concept to conjuring except that you are only calling to the spirits that live in your area and that there’s no guarantee that they’ll show up. Going out is like a scientist going on a field study for an organism that they’re interested in: might find them, might not, and if it’s spirits we’re talking about then might find but they don’t want to be interacted with.

That’s the biggest thing to remember when working with local spirits, that not all spirits are interested in interacting with humans. In fact, many spirits couldn’t care less about humans or even actively have ways to prevent humans from meeting them. You should respect spirits that don’t want to be worked with. If you really want to work with a particular group then you could try negotiating with them or slowly building up a relationship with them in order to see if they will eventually be willing. Just don’t force any spirit to interact or speak with you, that will end badly for you every time.

Safety

Spirit work isn’t always the safest thing and there’s many ways that you can be harmed. The most important thing to have is a protective circle. It will protect you from many things and can actually be very versatile. Obviously this is hard to make when going out and meeting spirits so we’ll separate the safety procedures for each technique.

Going Out to Meet the Spirits

When going out not only is it harder to bring and set up materials, you’re also in public a lot of the time which limits what you can do. That is why personal warding is important. Personal warding can take the form of energy shields, protective amulets, etc. These are things that should be prepared before going out with the intent of meeting spirits so that they are ready in case you do get attacked.

Calling the Spirits

Calling the spirits comes with the risk of inviting unknown entities into your home. That is why it is important to have wards and a protective circle. The circle will protect you if they try to attack you during the meeting while the wards will prevent them from getting back in after being banished. Generic wards are basic spirit work stuff so I’m not going to go into them here.

A circle, however, can be made in many different ways. The most important thing to keep in mind is that it has protective elements that you feel are helpful to you, not what some list on the internet says. You could take from traditional circles and use them as a template for creating your own or you can completely make a new style of circle. The possibilities are endless! Some things you might want to include are protective stones, the names of deities you work with, protective words or sigils, candles, etc. Any physical item you use should have a designated spot for it. Your orientation of the elements of the circle is also important, or well it can be if you ascribe that importance! Perhaps you use the four elements to protect you in your circle and you associate them with a particular direction for example.

When you decide on what the circle should look like, practice making and using it! You can draw it out on an old sheet so that you don’t have to keep remaking it, you can set out physical items in the shape of a circle or you can create it with energy if you’re good at that. However you make it, it’s important to get used to being in it and the energy that goes into “activating” it. Activating it usually involves calling upon whatever makes up the circle to protect you. Sticking with the element example, you’d activate is by calling for Fire, Water, Earth, and Air to protect you. Once you are done with the circle, you must close it. This usually means allowing whatever you called upon to depart but in the reverse order from before. Try it out, play around with it, find or create whatever procedure that is comfortable to you.

When speaking with spirits, do not let them in no matter how much they try to persuade you. Also, do not leave the circle until you are sure that they are gone. That’s why you should keep any banishing tools and the like on hand so you don’t have to run and fetch them. If you don’t follow both of those rules then what’s the point of making the circle?

[There’s many different ways to use a circle, this is just a generic explanation of it].

Calling the Spirits to You

This process includes creating a call of energy and sending it out into the “energy network” of your local area. Spirits in the area can hear this call and choose whether or not to answer it and show up.

Tools needed: An offering for the spirit that you are calling, any banishing tools, any physical items that make up your circle, a wand if you need/use one, and any communication tools if you need them.

Making the Call: Cast your circle, set your offering outside of it and get into a clear state of mind where you can access your energy. Say the call, either out loud or in your head, doesn’t matter. It can be anything but basically along the lines of “I call to any [spirit name] that would be interested in speaking with me for [an interview]. In return, I have an offering of [the offering]”. You can call them for any reason but like I’ve mentioned before, they’re not obligated to come. As you say the call, form the energy of your words into a ball of energy in front of you. This is where you can use your wand to help channel the energy easier. Visualization also helps here. Once it is formed and stable, send it out in all directions into the environment. I usually just shoot a quick burst of energy at it to give it the momentum to move fast but you can flick your wrist/wand or do whatever it is you normally do to send energy out.

Even after you finish saying the call, you can feed more energy into the energy ball if you want the call to be “louder” and travel farther. This can be dangerous though because since the call is made from your energy, it is connected to you and that’s how the spirits who answer your call can find you. When the call reaches the limits of its strength it disappears and all links to you are gone. However, the stronger you make it, the longer it is out in the environment and the more likely unexpected spirits can trace you. So basically, don’t make the call too powerful.

Meeting the Spirit: If the call isn’t made too strong (aka the amount of energy that the sample call above makes) then at most, it should take 10 minutes for the call’s energy to die out (usually not actually that long but it’s good to be safe). After you finish speaking with the spirit, thank them for coming and allow them to leave. Make sure that they are actually gone before closing your circle. If a spirit doesn’t appear within that time you can either resend the call or close your circle and try again later.

Notes: Creating the call doesn’t guarantee that a spirit will show up. It also doesn’t mean that the spirit who shows up is the spirit that you called to. I mean in the four years that I’ve been using this technique, I’ve never had the “wrong” spirit show up but I find it very hard to believe that it’s not possible. Both of these are reasons why it’s important to have the basic techniques for being able to sense a spirit’s presence and determine their identity.

Going Out and Meeting Spirits

This process is much more straightforward. You essentially go out to places in your area like beaches, parks, schools, etc., see if you can sense any spirits, and then see if any are interested in talking with you.

Tools needed: Any protective amulets or items that you have and an offering for any spirits you may come across

I don’t have much explanation for this because it ain’t much more complex than that. If you don’t know who you’re going to meet, generic offerings to bring include water, alcohol, bread, rice, tobacco, etc. If you know of an offering that the spirits where you’re headed would prefer then bring that. No matter what you bring do not leave anything that will pollute the environment. Any food offerings you bring should be in a container and then properly disposed of, not thrown on the ground for example.

Set out the offering and ask if anyone wants it. You can also respectfully approach anyone you see and ask if they would want it. If they decline your offer, then don’t press them. Just give them a “okay, sorry for bothering you” and leave. Be respectful when interacting with them, you are on their territory after all.

Also be smart about who you approach. If someone’s energy makes you feel uncomfortable or they’re a species or have an affiliation with a group that is known to be hostile, then be aware that you may need to defend yourself if you choose to approach them and things go sour. Of course not all bad-feeling spirits are actually bad, not all good-feeling spirits are actually good, and first impressions can be misleading. Just trust your intuition and be prepared for the worst in case it happens.

What to Do if You Are in Danger

It’ll happen. Not all spirits are friendly and many might look at you as prey or something to mess with. The most important thing to do is stay calm. When a spirit attacks, it can be very scary so I know that keeping a clear head isn’t always the easiest of things in that situation. That is why you should develop a clear plan for dealing with attacks beforehand and have all the tools that you need already prepared. If it’ll help, write down a basic procedure for banishing and keep it in your pocket or somewhere else that spirits won’t be able to easily see. That way even if you’re freaking out, you’ll have a lifeline telling you what to do.

Calling the Spirits

If a spirit attacks, tries to force their way into your circle, or suddenly acts hostile, banish immediately. It’s best not to take any chances. Once they are banished, cleanse the area and reinforce your wards. Sometimes spirits may do something that might make you uncomfortable but you don’t feel as though it’s bad enough to warrant forcing them out. You can simply ask them to leave or let them know that the behavior will not be tolerated. If they ignore your request, banish them. It’s possible that a spirit isn’t aware that they might be making you uncomfortable and so talking it out first before immediately jumping to banishing (if they’re not actively attacking you) could be beneficial for both of you. Just remember to be firm in your boundaries and don’t let the spirit persuade you into letting them go.

Reasons not to banish a spirit:

If they look “scary”. Their appearance doesn’t always reflect their personality. For some, that’s just the way that they were born.

If they’re a “demon”. Demon is a very useless, broad term that describes a myriad of entities all of which have different personalities and moralities. “Demon” is not the equivalent of “evil”.

Going out and Meeting the Spirits

The difference here is that you can’t really banish spirits when you visit them at their homes. That’d be like going over to a friend’s house and trying to kick them out. If a spirit attacks you while you’re away from your protected space, the best you can do is get out of there. If you came prepared with proper protection then it should be able to buy you enough time to escape. Depending on the situation, the attacking spirit may or may not be interested in chasing you. So, sometimes “escaping” can be simply removing yourself from the area immediately as the spirit is just acting aggressive so that you’ll back off. But other times, you may need to do a little more than that. If you suspect that you got followed home, perform a banishing of your property and cleanse yourself and the area. Then reinforce your wards.

The one thing that I have to say is that you need to be cognizant of why that spirit is attacking you. More specifically, you need to be aware of when your actions provoke a spirit to attack. Did you infringe upon their territory? Did you bother them after they told you that they didn’t want to interact? You are out in their realm, just as a spirit that you invite into your house should respect you, you should respect spirits when you meet them at their homes.

Which Process Should You Use?

It depends on what “level” of spirit work you’re at and what you want to accomplish. Calling a spirit to you is definitely requires an intermediate skill level in energy and spirit work whereas going out and meeting them only requires that you be able to sense and communicate with spirits. However, when you call a spirit to you, they’re more likely to be willing to talk since that’s what they came for according to your call. You’re also more protected since you’re able to have your circle and tools right at hand. Spirits that you simply meet outside aren’t always going to want to speak and it’s a bit harder to protect against them. So which process should you use? Both.

Not all spirits are interested in answering a call but they may be willing to talk with you come across them when outside. Sometimes, you need a long conversation with a spirit which is where calling them will be more useful. Calling them might even seem more convenient but I think that it’s important that you learn about the spirits around you by going out and meeting them before calling them to you. It not only helps you get a better idea of the community but it also lets spirits get a better idea of who you are.

I was at a con recently. And while looking at some of the art, I made a comment to a guy who had a collection of cat avengers prints that he was missing the best avenger. So he goes, ‘oh and who is that’ and I just kinda look sideways at him and say 'hawkeye, the only one you don’t have’. To wich he of course smirks and says 'is he really the best or is it just cause of jeremy renner?’

First of all… Jeremy Renner is a gorgeous human being and he is more than enough reason for Hawkeye to be awesome, so why the hell you got that smug look on your face like I’m just some random ass fangirl who don’t know shit about comics. I was fuckin dressed like Captain Marvel, 100% comic accurate costume thank you very much.

So my dad starts laughing cause he can see I got my 'fight me’ face on. And I proceed to list each and every reason why I have loved Hawkeye since waaaaay before the movies and why he gets even better with new movies and comics.

NUMBER ONE, he is the only fully human Avenger in every single story line.

To which of course I get 'well what about Black Widow’ well sir you must not know your comics very well because in the Earth-616 universe she has the Red Room version of the super soldier serum which gives her enhanced physical abilities as well as a very long lifespan.

Then comes the 'well Scott Lang is human’ well yeah but he’s got a mother FuCkiNG SUPER SUIT. What does Hawkeye have? Spandex or leather, not quite the same thing. And you take away that super suit, is Scott still a super hero? No he is in jail for being a thief. You take away Hawkeye ’ super sui… oh wait that’s right HE DON’T GOT ONE.

'But what about Black Panther he is human right?’ Do you know anything about comics dude? The dude eats a magical plant and is gifted his powers by the Wakandan Panther God and has enhanced speed, strength, agility, healing, reflexes, stamina, etc. NOT FULLY HUMAN he also is proclaimed King of the Dead and is granted the power and knowledge of past Black Panthers and gains the ability to control the dead… so awesome but still not human.

Hawkeye is 100% human 100% of the time (except a very brief moment when he borrowed pym particles just to help out on a mission) and still manages to keep up with super humans, gods and guys with fancy super suits.

NUMBER TWO, he is deaf, canononically.

'Well Daredevil is blind’ his accident enhanced his other senses… and not an Avenger… so your argument is not even relevant.

NUMBER THREE, he shoots a bow, usually a recurve, in battle with people that have magic and laser guns and other shit and he can shoot it with out even looking!

'But he has trick arrows’ wich are guaranteed to be weighted terribly and that weight changes depending on which arrow it is. So he not only has to compensate for the strange weight but he has to do it on the fly in the heat of battle for each individual arrow. Not to mention when he shoots multiple at once.

And come on, have you ever tried to shoot a bow and arrow, it’s not easy. It takes a lot of practice patients and skill. Especially to get as good as him.

NUMBER FOUR, I mean have you read the guys backstory? If you looked up tragic backstory in the dictionary, you would see a picture of Clint Barton. He was orphaned after his abusive father got into a car accident that killed his mother as well. Was sent to a children’s home, ran away to the circus, was trained by Swordsman and Trickshot who were not the best mentors, was betrayed and abandoned by Swordsman and his brother and left for dead, ended up severely injuring his brother, had to leave Trickshot, when he tried to do the hero thing he was mistaken for a criminal, was manipulated into trying to kill Iron Man, kept falling in love with women who didn’t love him back, left the Avengers at one point believing he was unwanted, was passed over because he was not super human, watched his brother die, was forced to leave the Avengers, had a bounty put on his right arm, lost former mentor Trickshot to cancer, split with his wife then watched her die saving him, sacrificed himself and came back, was almost assasinated, went to prison so the rest of his team could go free, was shot and conducted a suicide mission that saved the planet but killed him, lost his memory, was vanished into nothingness, doubted he was himself or even alive, faked his death, and that’s just the short list.

NUMBER FIVE, he ran the West Coast branch of the Avengers, as well as other treams.

NUMBER SIX, he took on the mantle of Captain America for a short time.

NUMBER SEVEN, Caw Caw Mother Fucker.

So yeah, suffice to say that I left the guy speechless surounded by his friends who were nodding along and adding in their own bits of info and laughing hysterically at him. I turned to walk away after that mic drop and heard him mumble, 'well I guess I’m making a cat hawkeye’

Richard told me it was an UNDERPLAY!

I sauntered into the Palladium expecting attendance to be sparse and the people who were there to be kids. But the place was packed and those in attendance were way past puberty, not that there was not screaming involved, but average age was 19 or 20, what was happening here, weren’t teen phenoms supposed to be time-stamped, to have their era and then be done, like the Cassidy brothers, Bobby Sherman and New Kids On The Block?

But no, Niall Horan has a #2 record, soon to be #1, how did this happen?

The audience is in control. That’s what Barnett told me. Used to be radio was the arbiter. But now the public gets a voice. Turns out they’re still into 1D. And those streaming numbers force the hand of radio and other old line gatekeepers.

Not that the starmaker machinery is not involved.

That’s what people don’t buy, the same ones paying attention to the press and the scuttlebutt. Saying major labels are over, you can make it on your own and streaming is the devil. Did you read today’s RIAA report? Revenue is up 17%! A far cry from the last decade when it was all doom and gloom, and paid on demand streaming is 43% of the total, far outnumbering downloads and physical.

The future’s so bright you gotta wear shades.

So Richard and Harry allowed Niall to make the record he wanted to. Which is a backlash against the overbearing label shenanigans the Mottola era inaugurated, never mind the reign of Clive Davis. The team was established and the record was recorded but they did argue about the single, which took 17 mixes to get right, because today it is all about the single, and if it’s not right you’re screwed.

And then Niall went around the world twice promoting himself and his new music. They told me he was good at it, remembered names, and I took this with a grain of salt until I was on the stairs after the show and he said “Hi Bob.” Hell, there are musicians I’ve known for decades who make like they don’t know me, ones I’ve written superlative stuff about, but this guy I met in passing as part of a group remembers me? I didn’t believe it. I thought he was prompted. But no, Niall just told me Richard had mentioned that I was gonna be there last night.

Whew!

People want to work with nice people. Talent isn’t enough.

And you work harder than a financial wizard, with a hell of a lot more jet lag. Niall shrugged when I queried whether he was burned out, he said he’d been around the globe seven times so far, hell, he just celebrated his 24th birthday in Japan! Staying up all night drinking until the English football came on.

When he’s not playing golf, that’s how he blows off steam. When he’s unavailable on the links.

And the label meshed with management and worked radio and the usual suspects, it’s a juggernaut, I tell you!

And now is where you pooh-pooh the whole damn thing, saying the music sucks, but the truth is Niall’s solo work is closer to Neil Young than Nas, and it ain’t just kiddie ditties, it’s more…rock and roll. With melody.

Yup, young people are gonna save this world. Everything old is new again. Niall loves the Eagles, and you may hate them, but the Eagles had superb songwriting skills, with melodies and choruses, and so does Niall. Not making a direct comparison, it’s just that what goes for rock today is oftentimes too self-referential, such a reaction to what once was that you can’t understand it unless you’re deep in the rabbit hole. Put on Niall’s new album at a dinner party and everybody will enjoy it. Songs with meaning you can sing along with, what a concept!

And right now Spotify is dominated by hip-hop. Because those were the early adopters. And as you can see the joke is on the pooh-poohers, because it’s streaming that’s driving revenue. Will other genres make an impact?

That’s an interesting question.

Hip-hop has culture, never underestimate the story.

But Niall has 1D story.

And those fans know every word and sing along.

And come in droves.

There’ll be a shed tour next year, but demand far outstrips that. But if you want credibility, you’ve got to act in a credible way.

Think about this, as you were glued to the past streaming won.

Now, youngsters not burdened by your baggage are gonna reinvent the business with the building blocks of your youth and succeed.

What’s the problem?

THERE IS NONE!

I was reading about elemental personalities because I believe it’s easier and much simpler to understand. It’s important to use the signs of our personal Natal placements and these include your Rising sign, Midheaven sign and your Sun through Mars signs. These are our personal placements that largely make us up and our personality. Look at the two dominating elements in your personal placements:

Fire and Water = unpredictable nature but the most adaptable and understanding combination too

Earth and Water = comforting nature and someone who walks a fine line between the physical and spiritual world

Air and Water = flexible and transformative through views, opinions and themselves in general

Air and Fire = easygoing and someone who can put emotions aside to get the work done

Earth and Fire = overbearing strength and burning passion in anything they do

Earth and Air = rational and practical but also imaginative and sometimes living in their own mind

For now, I won’t tap into what it means to have a trio of elements and what it means to have all the elements present in your personal placements. Not yet at least.

DragCon Tips & Tricks:

BRING MONEY – ESPECIALLY CASH.

  • Queens usually make you buy merch to meet them and get a pic at their booth. Don’t worry though, you can usually buy something for five or ten bucks (posters and pins) or some queens will just accept $5 for a photo if you don’t want to buy anything. This is the way these queens can make money back because they PAID out of pocket for a booth to see you guys! It supports their drag. Some queens accept cards but wifi is spotty so there’s no guarantee it’ll be up and working when you go, so cash is definitely preferred.

BRING A LARGE BAG.

  • An empty bag or bookbag to carry any items you may purchase is a must!  Some shops (like sugarpill) have bags but most don’t and most queens don’t so you don’t wanna be stuck carrying a bunch of random merch & risk losing it. Plus, it’s a great place to put your map / selfie light / sharpies / etc.

BRING SNACKS.

  • Not only will you be hungry…  the line for food at ANY convention is usually awful and they overcharge way too much chicken tenders. Food trucks outside or bringing snacks in are your best bet. Plus, that means you don’t have to spend time waiting for food when you could be waiting for queens.

HAVE A PLAN.

  • Having a plan at dragcon is super important bc otherwise you might get overwhelmed or forget something you wanna do !! Lines get busy and if you see a super long one you can always go find someone with a 15 to 30 minute line and come back later – but that’s only easy if you learn the layout of the con. I would definitely suggest printing a physical copy of the map they have on their website and writing down booths / queens you wanna visit (once they release the booth list). queens lines can get busy if they’re super popular so expect to wait a bit for some – sasha and adore usually took me like an hour, and katya took like two to get to but with less popular queens, it’ll only be a five to ten person wait.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR EXPERIENCE.

  • My fave thing to do is bring something that every queen can sign – i did a dress that i had everyone draw on, one of my friends did a croc, i know others have just done autograph books or like the front of a photo album they’d fill with selfies later !! Signatures are free once you’re meeting a queen and it’s a super cute way to get another physical memory besides just a photo.
  • I also like getting friends to film my meet and greet, or having someone else in line take pics on their phone and send them to me. That way if the actual m&g pics aren’t too cute, i’ve got other memories !!

  • Selfie lights and sharpies aren’t necessities but being able to have queens sign things and making sure you look right in photos is definitely a plus.

  • Portable chargers. You’re gonna need one. Phone batteries go quick, and do you really wanna be standing at the jeffree star charging station when you could be running around the con?

DRAG IT UP

  • Don’t be afraid to go all out with your outfit !! Dragcon is a place of acceptance so if you wear something wild you’re more than likely gonna get a bunch of compliments from strangers. But make sure it’s not super uncomfortable, and definitely wear something you can sit down in for when lines become stagnant. In the words of my friends Jewels, “If your corset is too tight you’re gonna be Nina in Untucked planking across a couch to try & rest.”

KEEP YOUR FEET IN MIND

  • Heels are cute but not dying is cuter so either commit to suffering (not recommended, i’ve had to literally carry friends back to their hotel) or bring a change of shoes if you wear heels– or just walk around all day in comfy slippers or slides and then put heels on for pics like some of my friends do. I prefer just wearing platforms – cute, comfortable, kickass, and they prevent me from having to carry around a second pair of shoes.

and most importantly:

BE OUTGOING

  • Don’t be afraid to talk to people !!! Lots of local queens and other drag artists come as fans and you might not recognize them, but asking them who they are and if you can get a pic always makes them smile and it might introduce you to some new incredible talents !! Trade instagram or twitter or tumblr handles. You’ll find yourself making a lot of really cool new friends and connections in the community.

–Changed Physical Features–

-Your eyes are your soulmate’s hair colour, changes when they dye it

-Everyone has heterochromia, one eye is your natural colour the other is your soulmate’s natural colour. Once you meet all eyes return to natural colour.

-Your hair colour is your soulmate’s sexuality flag (remember that there can be platonic soulmates, and that sometimes you can be soulmates with someone but they’re not soulmates with you)

- Once you meet your soulmate, you grow wings like an angel. You gain one new feather each time something special happens between you two. When your soulmate dies, you lose all your feathers and can no longer fly.

–Restrictions–

- It is impossible to lie to your destined soulmate.

- Under a curse until you meet your soulmate

- They have to say each other’s name to figure out they’re soulmates.

- Only your soulmate can kill you.

-The only voice in the world you can/can’t hear is your soulmate’s

-If you don’t find your soulmate by your #th birthday, you die

-Everyone wears a mask. You get to finally take it off when you meet the one with your identical mask, your soulmate.

-You’re stuck in a room filled with clones (with maybe slight differences) of your soulmate. You need to kill all except your soulmate or else you won’t get out/be together.

- On top of everybody’s head is the name of their soulmate. You can’t see your own. If you tell somebody their soulmate’s name, something unfortunate/death will happen to them/yourself/a soulmate.

-Your soulmate is invisible to you until you figure out a certain trigger.

- If anyone except for your soulmate says your name, you die

- Opposite of the above, if your soulmate says your name you die

-The only words you can say is your soulmates name until you meet them.

-You can’t harm your soulmate

-You can only harm your soulmate

-You have a limited number of words, and you can only recharge when you’re with your soulmate (when you use up your word count, you die)

–Experiences/Actions–

- When you meet your soulmate, time stops for a month for everyone besides you two.

-For a month, you and your soulmates have to go through different soulmate AUs each day (ooh you can use my lists for ideas *cough cough*)

-Each year at a certain age, soulmates are paired together into some sort of battle royal thing, best OTP wins

-At the corner of your eye, you can see a blurry vision of whatever your soulmate is doing (like sitting down drinking coffee in your living room, even though they’re doing this in another area)

-Soulmates can switch lives whenever they feel like it

-When you meet your soulmate for the first time, you get a flashback/relive their entire lives

-Similar to above, except you get glimpses of their future

-Before you die, you flash through your soulmate’s entire life (what they were doing before they met you, if they’ve ever lied to you, etc

-Hidden in dreams, but never interacting, is your soulmate

-A certain time frame began to loop, and the only way for it to stop is to find your soulmate

- You will keep looping your life until you meet your soulmate.

- Legend says that if you fold 1000 paper (Cranes? Planes? Rabbits? Anything really) You can meet your soulmate.

- Everyday, you have the chance to spin a wheel that will determine an event your soul mate will face. (Some people may avoid it for bad luck, others may spin it for the slim chance of your soulmate getting a cure for their illness or something)

-There’s this special video game where your partner is your soulmate. You only get to meet if the two of you finish the game.

-At the age of sixteen, everyone goes into another world for two years, hanging out with their soulmate. Time is warped to make sure the two of you are sixteen in this world. When the two years are up, you’re sent back into the real world, with fractured memories of what happened. These foggy memories make it hard to find them again. (Numbers can be changed.)

- The first time you touch your soulmate, you’re forced to relive their best day and/or worst day of their lives (past or future).

- Human beings die on their 25th birthday (or any number). To prevent this, they have to meet their soulmate. But only one of them can survive.

- If you haven’t met your soulmate but have been in the same vicinity of each other (like passing each other on a street or in the same building), that day will keep repeating until you find each other.

- Once you meet your soulmate you’re literally stuck to each other for the rest of the day.

–Compasses–

- A red string tied around your pinky is connected to your soulmate’s pinky (when the two of you are in a certain distance)

- You can only see the string of fate when you close your eyes.

-Temperature gets hotter the nearer they are, colder when they are further away

-Each person has a spirit animal that can lead you to your soulmate

- Counter of how many footsteps away you are from your soulmate

- Your soulmate leaves coloured footprints only visible to you

- Throwing something you love on the full moon will land on your soul mate

-You can feel a tug from wherever your soulmate is. These may either be automatic, or have stronger tugs whenever your soulmate is in distress.

- Each soulmate pair has a constellation, and the constellation that you perceive to be the brightest is pointing towards where your soulmate is.

–Hints–

-You get a photograph of your soulmate and vice versa, somehow (Could be yearly, could be at a certain age, could be a photo of when you first met, etc)

-The voice in your head (example: your conscious) is your soulmate’s voice (by that I meant that they have the same voice, not that’s it’s your soulmate’s personality in your head– y’know, take it as you will)

- Every year, you receive a puzzle piece. The whole picture is your soulmate’s name/appearance/location/etc.

-Mysterious letter detailing to one person when they’ll meet, and another letter detailing where they’ll meet to their soulmate, but not both (Person A gets when they’ll meet, Person B gets where they’ll meet)

-Letter about details of how the meeting between soulmates go (example: “you get pushed into a lake by a guy in a duck suit and your soulmate helps you”, etc)

-Bubbles gives you a blurry glimpse into your soulmate’s world (visions of possessions, friends, family, laughter, crying, etc)

- Everyone holds a locket with their soulmate’s picture, but it can only open when certain conditions are met

- Instead of removing flower petals for “loves me, loves me not” the flower petals dictate whether you’ll meet in this lifetime (“meet me, meet me not”) and it’s forever accurate.

- Everyone has memories of their soulmate in their past life.

- Everyone receives a picture of their soulmate (at a certain age) taken the year they met.

- You get to meet the parents of your children’s soulmates.

- You dream of the place of where you’ll meet your soulmate.

- The first picture you and your soulmate are in will be sent to you on a birthday (which can be tricky if it was, for example, a class photo. Or a newspaper picture of a crowd).

–Your Soulmate–

-If you and your soulmate possess the same item, it’ll glow

-Everyone has a special pen/marker/drawing utensil. Using it, the lines are thicker when their soulmates feel strong emotions, thinner when they’re feeling weak, run out of ink when they die, etc.

-There’s this special block of clay that represents your soulmate. It has a special colour and changes forms depending on how your soulmate is feeling.

-Once you’re an adult, you get kicked out of the house until you find your soulmate.

-Everyone gets little books of what people think about their soulmate (but never said out loud)

- Everyone has a device to check if the other person is their soulmate (like a light that’s red when it’s not and green when it is). It gets brighter when they’re full of life, dimmer when they get sick, and out of batteries when they’re dead.

- Literal sparks fly when you’re near your soulmate, soothing for the two of you but static shock for others.

- Your level of talent at a hobby is determined by how close you are with your soulmate.

- The outline of your shadow is your soulmate.

- You meet your soulmate the day after the worst event of your life.

- Everyone somehow owns a creature who possesses the same (general) personality as your soulmate.

—–END OF LIST—–

Okay yeah my organization skills kinda stink, but I did my best. And hey, categories! You can ask me for more of a specific category if you’d like and if I can, I’ll think up some more for that specific category. (I also know that some AUs fit in multiple categories but blergh…)

Enjoy! You can use any of these without permission, half of these aren’t mine anyway (but if you do tell me you’ll use one I’ll be giddy that you read this and it’ll make my day, I swear). Happy writing! :D

@gracefulleopard asked:

Would it be possible for a ghost to go intangible, through a wall or object, and then return to tangibility while still inside the physical object? Or would there be some sort of instinct/fail-safe type thing that prevented them from doing so until they were clear of the obstruction?

In short, there doesn’t need to be a instinctual fail-safe because they just wouldn’t be able to do it! Matter hates existing in the same place as other matter. If a ghost tries to unphase in the same space as other stuff, the stuff either compresses, is displaced, breaks, forcefully ejects them, or they are trapped in their phased state.

How to prepare for Ramaḍān!

Some notes summarised from Shaykh Yāsir Birjas

#IfYouFailToPrepare #YouPrepareToFail

1. Fast as many days as you can

  • As per sunnah
  • As a physical preparation for Ramaḍān

2. Get your Qurʾān Khatmah started in sha‘bān‎

  • To soften your heart before Ramaḍān
  • So that you can reach higher targets this year within Ramaḍān

3. Adjust your sleeping habits to fall in line with Ramaḍān

  • And start getting used to having short power naps

4. Get your body physically ready for Ramaḍān

  • To protect yourself from hardships in the long standing in the nights

5. Prepare your menu

  • If you eat certain foods in Ramaḍān and certain amounts, start getting used to eating like that now

6. Prepare your family

  • Inform them that sha‘bān‎ has begun and for them to implement these points
  • Assist them in preparation as you see fit

7. Adjust your schedule to pray Isha and Fajr in the Masjid

8. Buy a few books, especially on the subject around the Qurʾān

  • Tafsīr, stories, tadabbur etc
  • Don’t buy too many books that no one will read anyway
  • Buy age appropriate books

9. Calculate your zakah now

  • For assistance contact National Zakat Foundation

10. Make a list of Bad habits and start eliminating process

  • Think deep and ask your close family and friends to let you know what they are

11. Make a duʿāʾ list

  • Include people and requests
  • Rather than reading it in Ramaḍān
  • If you prepare from now, it will be memorised by Ramaḍān

May Allāh allow us to reach Ramaḍān

6 Ways to Keep The Fire Burning

6 Ways to Keep The Fire Burning

If you’ve been in a relationship for a while you know how easy it can be to fall into a routine of the same old, same old. Keep things hot by mixing it up with these fun and sexy ideas:

1.      Try new activities together. Usually spend Friday nights watching movies on the couch? Try out a new activity together like bowling, mini golf or eating a new type of cuisine on your next date. Getting out of your comfort zone as a couple is not only fun but will bring you closer together too.

2.      Spend time apart. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so spend time with other groups of friends. You’ll look forward to seeing each other afterwards and have lots to talk about. Being apart makes you appreciate being together.

3.      Look your best. It’s great to be comfortable around your partner, but after a while it’s easy to let yourself go. Too many nights in wearing sweats and an old t-shirt can send the message that you just don’t care as much as you used to. Try dressing up a little and putting a bit more care into your appearance the way you did when you were first trying to catch their eye. You’ll feel hotter and they’ll definitely notice.

4.      Pick each other up. Just for fun, try going out to a party or coffee shop and pretending that you don’t know each other. Take turns trying to catch each others eye and trying to impress the other with your best pick up lines. Your smooth talking will either be hot or have you both laughing – both are fun and a great way to spice it up.

5.      Get competitive.  Challenge each other to a darts tournament, an arm wrestling competition, or anything that gets the competitive spirit going. You’ll both be fired up and a little competitive tension can be red hot.

6.      Get physical.  Working up a sweat on a hike, at the gym, or playing a team sport together gets your adrenaline and endorphins pumping. Physical activity boosts serotonin, the feel-good hormone, which will put you both in great spirits and give you a natural high. Added bonus: you get to check each other out in workout gear.

Okay, but imagine trans!Albus (Cursed Child spoilers)

He was originally named Ariana, after Ariana Dumbledore.

When he realizes at age nine that he is a boy, the first person he tells is his Aunt Hermione. She’s entirely accepting of him, and encourages him to come out to his parents.

His parents, of course, are surprised, but still accepting of their new son. He begs his parents to give him a new name, because he can’t decide on one. They decide ‘Albus’ seems reasonable.

Albus asks about his middle name, too. When his parents pause to think, Albus exclaims, “Wait! Dumbledore was a headmaster of Hogwarts, I wanna be named after TWO headmasters of Hogwarts!! That would be so cool!!”

Suddenly, Harry blurts out the first headmaster he can think of- Severus. He cringes as soon as he says it, because, Merlin, Albus Severus? What kind of name was that, did he want his kid to get beat up?

But Albus immediately loves it, and refuses to change it, and whatever mades Albus happy, that was fine by him.

His family, of course, accepts him too, and helps him transition. Percy and Ron are a bit baffled by it at first, but with some explaining from Hermione, they quickly come to understand.

As he is Harry Potter’s son, his transition is followed closely by the media- Harry receives lots of criticism for allowing his son to transition at such a young age, but he vehemently defends his son no matter what, screw whatever Rita Skeeter has to say. Hermione, as minister, orders the reporters to stop harassing her nephew. No one argues- she’s the minister after all. Hermione would continue to be Albus’s #1 supporter throughout the years, along with Harry and Ginny.

One day, when Albus is ten, Albus and Lily walk off into a book shop by themselves- a customer recognizes them and begins spewing transphobic slurs and statements at Albus. Lily starts crying, but Albus calmly tosses a book at the man’s head and tells him to bugger off. The man swings at him, and just as Albus ducks, Harry walks in the shop and sees the scene, hearing the man say something along the lines of, “Don’t touch me, tranny!”

He then looks up and sees a very angry-looking Harry Potter standing right above him, who says in a low voice, “Excuse me, what did you say to my son?”

The man tries to explain himself, but Harry interrupts.

“Verbal harrasment and attempted physical assault of a minor- that’s a crime. I’m sorry, sir, but I need you to put your hands behind your back.”

Albus won’t stop talking about how cool his dad is for over a month.

When he gets his Hogwarts letter, he is pleased to see that it refers to him as 'Mr. A Potter.’ When he asks about it, he is assured that he will be allowed to stay in whatever dorm he likes- the girl’s dorm probably wouldn’t let him in anyways.

When he arrives at Hogwarts, he immediately feels out of place- not only is he getting crap for being a Slytherin when everyone expected him to be like his dad, but everyone, everyone, knows he’s trans. It seems like he can’t go a week without someone bringing it up to him, whether it be in a good-natured way or not. The only person who doesn’t bring it up is Scorpius, which Albus is eternally grateful for.

When Albus and Scorpius steal the timeturner for the first time, Albus wakes up in the hospital wing, and sees his father talking to a portrait.

“Dad?” he says. But something isn’t right. His voice sounds wrong. Harry turns around, looking at him.

“Yes, Ariana?”

Albus stares at him in disbelief- no one has called him Ariana in years, why would his father say that?

“Ariana?” he repeats, swallowing.

“Yes,” Harry continues, “that is your name, is it not?”

Albus opens his mouth to protest, but his eyes fall on the mirror on the wall- he sees his reflection and gasps.

In this timeline, he realizes, he never came out. He never transitioned. In the mirror, staring him in the eyes, is the face of a girl. Of Ariana Potter.

Albus falls silent. Harry continues talking, and Albus learns that in this timeline, he is also a Gryffindor. What happened in this timeline, he wonders, that could’ve stripped him of his gender and his house?

When he meets Professor Granger, he understands immediately.

Without his Aunt Hermione, he would have never had the courage to come out about his gender.

He feels hopeless in this timeline without Scorpius and Aunt Hermione. Albus wants nothing more than for Scorpius to hold him and tell him it’s going to be okay, but he isn’t allowed to talk to Scorpius.

When Delphi convinces Scorpius to talk to Albus again, Albus is so relieved he cries in Scorpius’s arms, never letting go. Seeing Albus so miserable and terrified in this timeline is what convinces Scorpius to go back again to fix it.

When they face off against Delphi, Delphi stops calling Albus by his real name. In order to taunt him, she calls him 'Ariana’. When Harry hears her call Albus this during their fight, it fuels his anger to take her down even more.

And when everything blows over, Harry takes Albus and Scorpius both out for ice cream- he apologizes for everything. For separating them, for doubting Scorpius, and for not making it clear in Albus’s youth that he would be accepted no matter what, which was what caused the timeline where Albus never came out of the closet.

Anyways…what I’m saying is I’ll accept this as canon long before I accept “there are times I wish you weren’t my son” as canon.
