1886 caricature of General Georges Boulanger by Émile Cohl. General Boulanger (1837-1891) was, for a time, a hugely popular figure among French non-elites, and almost initiated a coup d'état to install himself as dictator. His movement, known as Boulangisme, had 3 main goals: Revanche (Revenge on Germany), Révision (Revision of the Constitution), Restoration (the return to monarchy). Eventually, the French government issued a warrant for his arrest. He fled to England and his popularity declined, and soon after, he shot himself in the head sitting on the grave of his former mistress.
