Spanish Flags Geometric Abstraction in Photography #3
Spanish Flags is the product of a five year exploration into new realities of geometric abstraction captured through photography. By using the camera to subvert the traditional idea of photography [capturing an observed reality] Cornwell has used the inexplicable allure of Bauhaus design so prevalent throughout South Western Europe to create new realities within the frame. With bold colours and strong segmented divides the result has a distinct similarity to the design aesthetic of national flags thus becoming synonymous with their location. Rotating the squares by 45 degrees reinforces the concept on the viewer to see the image out of context, challenging the orthodox rigid structure.
