Yesterday at the Muppets panel (which was generally delightful) I said that I was thrilled to hear that Miss Piggy would be one of the first female late night talk show hosts, and asked if there are any plans for more female representation within the Muppets.
Kermit said he’d love to see more female representation, although clearly in a way that it was trying to stick it to Piggy (they’re currently broken up), and Piggy asked if she wasn’t enough.
As excited as I am about the new Muppets TV show, and as much as I love the history of the Muppets, this is what happens when you have a table of white men as the only gauge for a show. Kermit- sweet, gentle Kermit the Frog, who told Joey he loved her minutes after she kept replacing letters of the alphabet with Cookie Monster- uses the possibility of more women to bait his ex-girlfriend, and Miss Piggy sees it as an attack on her own superiority.
I’ve talked before about how I’m a huge fan of Miss Piggy feminism- not ashamed of her size, not willing to play dumb, actively taking what she wants and owning it- but this brand of female exceptionalism isn’t something I support at all, and I’m really disappointed that this may be the direction the show is going in.
