Like Halston, Coco Chanel started her career as a milliner. This photo of actress Genevieve Vix probably came from the 1912 issue of Les Modes, where Chanel’s arrival as a new hat designer was announced with great fanfare.
Vix’s love life seemed to parallel Chanel’s: After Chanel left the apartment she occupied as a tenant of lover Etienne Balsan, Vix moved into it as the lover of Balsan’s brother, Jacques. And when Chanel took up with Grand Duke Dmitri in 1920, Vix and Prince Kyril Narishkin became a couple.
