When introduced in the GDR in 1961, the B1000 was up to date with its western competitors: the VW T1, the Ford Taunus Transit, the Renault Estafette. But in typical GDR fashion, supply did barely fit demand and technically the Barkas remained a product of 60′s socialism throughout its entire production period. Only 175740 were built – in 30 years.
