Why Felicity Smoak Matters

I tend not to discuss specific media all that often here, but I find it strangely heartening that there is a large contingent of bloggers who want Oliver Queen to end up with the openly Jewish Felicity Smoak on Arrow.

We can get into the fact that her actress isn’t Jewish another time. The character very much is.

We need more heroic openly Jewish characters in popular media. It doesn’t matter if Kitty Pryde or Ben Grimm are Jewish if the movies don’t bring it up. In a medium where we’re often portrayed as selfish and petty and are usually portrayed as gangsters, corrupt attorneys, greedy bankers, dorky scientists or, at best, as comic relief, a character who uses her skills and position to do good is important. The fact that she’s a lead character who serves as the conscience of the team is important. The fact that she’s funny without ever being a joke is important. The fact that her being a Jew isn’t buried, even if it’s not brought up every episode, is important.

Felicity Smoak is important.

I think that people got overly upset about Rowling's "oh yeah I wrote a Jew". She mentioned a specific Jew that was in the book, AND THEN she stated that it was a world where all different kinds of people existed so there would be more (if the world actually existed). But because there was only one stated people got upset and cried over nothing.

Do you think Jewish Superheroes celebrating Chanukah is our banner by accident?

Jewish representation is a HUGE issue right now. We are rarely portrayed as heroic figures. Usually we are either gangsters, corrupt lawyers or bankers, nerds, self-pitying narcissists or non-stop jokes. Hermione Granger is a character who looked and felt like a lot of Jewish girls I grew up with.

  • Her physical description read as very stereotypically Jewish.
  • She was the first person in her family allowed in the school, there were lots of barriers to Jews getting into private schools for a long time and we could relate to that
  • She had a strong affiliation for the downtrodden, especially the enslaved, which is a big cultural touchstone for us, considering Jews commemorate being freed from slavery every year during Passover
  • She’s smart and bookish and, while that’s often a mocked as a Jewish stereotype, it’s played really positively here.

There’s a lot more too.

But heroic Jews are so uncommon in popular fiction that we feel the desire to head-canon them. Hermione is such an easy choice because she makes heroic what gets too many Jewish girls mocked.

So a lot of people were hoping that Hermione or another major character would be revealed to be a Jew. Instead it’s some character who made no impact at all. That’s representation by presence, not by significance.

I don’t think it costs us anything if other people head-canon Hermione to be part of their group. But this wasn’t the kind of representation we were hoping for and, frankly, making Anthony Goldstein an irrelevant Ravenclaw and not a heroic Gryffindor in some ways makes things worse than saying nothing, because instead of transcending stereotypes he inhabits one.

So no. I understand the upset. While I don’t feel it as keenly as some, it does sting as a kind of tokenism.
