games like this are the reason why video games are my favorite medium

With the release of Risky's Revenge on PC I finally realized something that I've been pondering for awhile now.

I think Wayforward’s Shantae might be my most favorite character design of all time and one of the best female character designs I’ve ever seen

Now both of her games, Shantae on the Game Boy Color and Risky’s Revenge are pretty rad. They’re metroidvania style platformer-adventure games in which you explore, find loot, use your special abilities to beat bosses and find treasures. It’s good stuff. There’s some annoying aspects to them but all around they’re pretty solid games.

But yes, the titular heroine. Out of all the comic books, cartoons, anime, manga, etc. I’ve ever seen I think she is one of the best designed characters I’ve ever come across.

Why’s that?

For starters, she’s probably one of the only female characters I’ve ever seen who manages to perfectly mold cuteness and sexiness without going overboard on either front.

Ya see, in all official art she kind of got a bit of an anime thing going on; a small body with a slender frame, but with a big head and big expressive eyes with big eye lashes that give the character a lot of expressiveness.

Then you’ve got her sexy side.

A lot of the times in various artistic mediums like sequential art, animation, or video games artists will attempt to draw character with sex appeal through details of their cloth, or lack there of, in most cases.

Often times it can get pretty nonsensical due to a disconnect between the way the character is written, how the scenario she’s engaged in is written or just real life sense.

I’m not going to be one of those puritan types who says something like, oh say, bikini armor is bad because it’s unrealistic, and nobody would wear that. I know it’s completely idiotic, even if the writer tries to lampshade it in some clownish way. Cheesecake can be fine if you aren’t willing to take everything so seriously.

Yet that can be damaging to your narrative if you feel the need to forcibly include cheesecake to pander to a specific audience.

As for Shantae on the other hand, she totally gets away with it. I can really believe she runs around in basically a bra and poofy pants.

Because it all coincides with her character and that’s the big thing, everything about a character that we see and don’t have to end up reading on some wiki or something should all mesh together.

She looks like a genie (which she is) and a stereotypical Arabian Belly Dancer (which she also kind of is).

Going back to the whole cuteness thing for a minute, I always thought it was adorable when she crouches and wiggles her butt like a cat.

Anyway, my point is that even though she looks sexy, it’s not overpowering. It’s not the one thing I could use to describe her, and it’s not even the first thing I could use.

Probably because her design is so open with her sex appeal, and she moves around freely with no real reference to it that I don’t pay that much attention to that aspect of her character, particularly when I know she has other facets.

Besides, how could your attention be drawn away from this face?

Wayforward seem to have a knack for making female characters who can be both cute and sexy.

Moving away from heavily opinionated reasons over why I love Shantae’s character design, lets look at some technical aspects of why her design is the best.

Now, when you look at Shantae, what would you say are her primary colors?

Red, Purple, Brown, and Gold.

There are 2 things that are very important when designing a character; color and iconography.

In video games, when you think of a color, usually certain characters come to mind.

When you think of Red, you think of Mario.

when you think of Blue, you think of Sonic the Hedgehog or Mega Man

when you think of Green, you think of Luigi or the Master Chief

When you think of Pink, you think of Kirby.

Color is extremely important. It’s also important to have a good balance of color so the character is visually appealing.

Shantae’s balance of color is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Even better that the colors are all placed in a way that help you to remember aspects about her character.

The red is on her clothes, dancer’s clothes.

The gold is on her bangles, hair tie, ear rings, and headband; this part is interesting because it infers a number of uses. Not only is gold considered to be a symbol of richness but it’s also a symbol of magic, and can also serve to remind of the bondage that comes with the territory of genies as well as her primary role as a guardian of the town she watches over.

Her brown skin, again, it lends to her sex appeal as girls with bronzed skin look ravishing but it also serves to remind us that she is from a tropical/desert region.

And finally, purple which is a highly dominant color for her because it’s the color of her most dominant and iconic feature, her hair.

As I was saying about iconography, it’s also important to give your character a recognizable icon or symbol that people can associate with them.

Superman has the S, his Kryptonian family symbol.

and Batman has the Bat symbol

If there’s one thing you’re probably drawn to when it comes to Shantae’s design, it’s her hair, something that also serves as her primary attack. Wayforward always seems to go to great lengths to make her hair stand out

and in fact, way back during her conception that was what they mainly wanted to focus on most.

Even fan art and fan animations focus most on her hair

In the end, that is all why I believe Shantae is one of the best designed characters ever made.

She has the perfect balance of cute and sexy that few female characters have obtained. The most likable features she has all mold well together and make sense for her character, her actions, and the setting she’s in. She has a superb and well balanced color scheme. And she has dominant characteristics and features that are unique to her and no other character.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed

What type of student would the 2p Axis and Allies be also what would be their favorite subject?

((Omfg that’s so weird! I wrote something about that not too long ago for the 1P! Hetalia Axis and Allies XD Weird! Although, i’m sure the 2P!Hetalia crew would me much different, so allow me to fulfill your desires~! :D))

Scenario: *How the 2P’s would be in school*

2P!America: “The Jerky-Jock”; he gets all of the chicks, despite the fact that everyone knows he’s trouble, and is just about proficient in any/all sports available. The school’s MVP that gets out of most trouble (including the ranks he pulls with his brother) because of how valuable he is to the school’s athletic proficiency.

His favorite subject is Physical Education, and his least favorite is History; because who would need to know about any other nation besides good ol’ MURICA’!

2P!England: “The Generous”; you know that one kid that always has snacks in class, but no one calls out because they all know he’d share if you asked? That’s him. He loves sharing what he can, whether it’s his food or his notes for class. Nobody expects him to be anything but nice, but believe me this guy has a nasty side if you cross a line.

His favorite subject is Home Economics, and his least favorite is World Language; whether it’s French, Spanish, or German, they all bring back some pretty sour memories for him >:P

2P!France: “The Asshole”; that one kid in class who just can’t be described in any sort of way…he’s judgmental, hard to work with, makes mean comments, and has all other sorts of tendencies that characterize him as a mean ol’ guy. No matter how good/bad he’s doing in the class, he treats it all like he couldn’t care less.

His favorite subject is World Language (French); and his least favorite subject is Math….because fuck that shit-

2P!Russia: “The Brainiac”; he’s proficient in just about all subjects and isn’t afraid to show it. He’s all Honors classes, has a 4.0 GPA, and is the kind of smart kid that isn’t interested in sharing their talents with others. After all, they only want them for their notes, so why should they? If they were in school for any sort of reason, they should have the motivation to do their best and do what’s necessary! Besides, he’s more proficient on his own.

His favorite subject is Science, and his least favorite subject is Art. He’s just not a creative person! He doesn’t have much of any sort of imagination…

2P!China: “Ladies’ Man~”; seemingly his only aim throughout the entire schoolyear was to have the most amount of exes out of everybody! He had a new date every other day, and his schoolwork was only barely bordering on a D+ average. It’s not like he can’t do better, everyone knows he can if he really wanted to…but he just doesn't want to XD

His favorite subject is World Language(Mandarin); his least favorite subject is Physical Education….his talent lies in his ability to pick up chicks, not his ability to do 30+ push-ups in under a minute. He prefers to sit out on the bleachers and watch or text bae or something-

2P!Canada: “School Jokester”; exactly as the name implies, hes the prankster of the school! It’s come to the point where if even the slightest thing seems out of place or suspicious, everyone kind of just oddly looks at him, as if expecting a confession or reaction (regardless of whether or not he actually did it) Teaming up with the school jock, his brother Allen, they dominate the school’s pranking.

His favorite subject is World Literature, and his least favorite is biology, because mAN DISSECTING ANIMALS ISN’T OKAY-!

2P!Prussia: “The Shy Guy”; again, exactly as the name implies, Gilen is the one shy kid that, while he dos have friends, new people aren’t very eager to socialize with him because of the awkwardness of dealing with a,well, socially-awkward person. H’e nice, respectful, and a well-behaved student, but lacks the social skills necessary to get better grades on group/partner projects.

His favorite subject is Creative Writing, but his least favorite is Public Speaking, for obvious reasons.

2P!Romano: “That Girly Guy”; he’s that one guy with more girl friends than guy friends; so much so that people often make assumptions about his sexuality (regardless of what it actually is). He’s a guy who enjoys looking nice and talking with girls, than he is someone who would talk about sports and whatever else dudes talk about, is that so wrong?

His favorite subject is Drama, and his least favorite subject is Algebra because fUCKING LETTERS AND NUMBERS SHOULD NOT BE TOGETHER IN MATH!

2P!Spain: “Loner”; maybe having one or two okay friends at maximum, his guy is silent and prefers to work alone. he also isn’t very afraid to show it. Unlike “The Shy Guy”, he purposefully forces people away from him so that he can have his personal space and enjoy solitude in….solitude XD

His favorite subject is World Language (Spanish), and his least favorite subject is economics, because that stuff is just really confusing and extensive and- gAH! Can’t they just each us how to balance a checkbook and get it over with?

2P!Germany: “Pervert”; unlike the other archetypes affiliated with girls around the school, the pervert isn’t proficient in his ability to pick up girls. In fact, the pervert is notorious for his capability to,in fact, wound up chasing away girls as a result fo his efforts. Regardless of how enjoyable or likable his personality may/may not be, he never seems to express himself in a light that’s appealing to the single female.

His favorite subject is Criminology, and his least favorite is World Literature, because bOOOOOORIIIIIIIING!

2P!Japan: “Otaku”; as opposed to being known for something school-related, Kuro is an otaku that is instead known for his affiliation with products of the Japanese entertainment industry; whether it’s authentic video games, anime, manga, etc. If anyeone is interested in any of the above, they come to the guru of the school for advice, teachings, and recommendation as to which games or anime or manga is good for which interests/people/etc.

His favorite subject is Art, and his least favorite subject is Geography, because goddammit, the world’s so large, how is anybody expected to memorize such large quantities of small/medium/large countries all around!?

2P!Italy: “King of the School”; this guy runs the school, and he’s loving it. Like the brainiac, he is proficient in a plethora of subjects. Like the Girly Guy, he has quite a few female friends, as well as male friends. Like the Jock, he has a knack for athletics and plays a role in a lot fo the school’s….everything. He runs the school, knowing just about anything/everything about anyone/everyone. He has so much charisma, respect, and maturity that even teachers find themselves victim of his persuasive words. It’s not like he asked to be as perfect as he was, but, despite that, he isn’t going to let all fo his talents go to waste.

His favorite subject is Physical Education, and he doesn’t really have a least favorite subject. They’re all pretty okay, in his opinion.

((Luciano running my school would be a terrifying thing XD But then again, associating myself with the rest of the 2P’s would be pretty damn awesome~! Thanks for the request, anon! I enjoyed it, and i hope everyone else enjoyed it too?))

I don't expect you to actually know this let me just start off by saying that lol but I value an opinion on the subject: Why do you think some superhero shows and their fans seem so anti-romance? Like, have these people actually READ a comic book where there is romance underlining every single story with all of their characters? I mean I love Peggy Carter, Agents of Shield and Daredevil but they could benefit from romance just to deepen the characters and enrich their lives you know?

This is a tough one to answer, Anon, because everybody’s different.  I don’t think this is an issue specific to the comic book television section.  I’ve seen it outside that and into many other TV show types.

We’ll start with me for a moment. I have particular viewing & reading habits.  I don’t like serial killers.  I don’t like sad stories where the hero/heroine dies.  I don’t care for stories of domestic abuse, addicts, child abusers, rape, molestation, etc.  I’m not a big fan of fantasy.  I don’t like reality TV (or rather, I should say I don’t like reality tv shows that aren’t competitions based on actual skill, like SyFy’s Face Off).  I simply don’t enjoy “those kinds” of stories.  So for some, it’s as simple as that: they don’t care for stories of romance.  Hearts & flowers?  Blah!  Dates and kisses and falling in love while walking in snowstorms?  Zzzzzzzz.  It’s just not their bag.

10 years ago today my favorite videogame franchise released its fourth installment Silent Hill 4: The Room and not only was it my first Silent Hill game that eventually led to my love for video games, story telling and fascination for all forms of psychological mediums, but it also bares some of my most valued memories with my best friend Dane Pitchford. We stayed up late in the dark of my upstairs apartment two feet from my television problem solving and going through the terrifying emotions of Henry Townshend as he was confined to his own haunted apartment room. I know those games have some great qualities like character development, gameplay and soundtrack but I know that a major portion of why I love this franchise is because of those memories I have completing that game with my best friend. Its the whole reason I am so involved with the Silent Hill community and why I have such a successful blog today. Thank you Dane. Miss you buddy.

In your GamerGate post, you said "I’m pretty sure I have the exact opposite vision from them about what video games should be like". What is your vision of what video games should be like and what do you believe GamerGate's vision of what video games should be like is?

I think it’s a great thing that there are people trying to make feminist video games and evaluate video games for how feminist they are and discuss feminism in video games.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have no interest in playing feminist video games. In general I find feminist media very offputting; the feminist narratives of womanhood never include anything I am, could be, or might aspire to, so I feel very lonely whenever I engage with feminist media. Plus, declaring a work of media feminist makes my brain mentally switch it from ‘entertainment’ to ‘duty’. I haven’t seen Jupiter Ascending or Mad Max for this reason; I’d probably have liked them, but now my brain has tagged them as Feminist Media I Ought To Watch and so now it doesn’t want to.

But all of that is totally irrelevant. I also don’t like playing LoL, but I think it’s a great thing that there are people who play it and discuss it and write about it. I hate jump scares and so refuse to play Five Nights at Freddy’s, but I think it’s awesome that people are making games like that and talking about games like that. And I think it’s totally reasonable and natural that people are complaining about games not being to their tastes and starting discussion groups about their preferred things and which games those things are present in.

Feminist media criticism is not at all interesting to me. I just think that if anyone wants it to exist, it should exist. And I think that going to a feminist media critic and saying “but why would you want to inject feminism into your video games?” is like me going up to a Five Nights at Freddy’s streamer and saying ‘but why would you want to inject jump scares into your video games?”

People have different preferences. Getting worked up about other people talking about and complaining about and lobbying for their preferences is super silly.
