Completion Radical hysterectomy after chemoradiation in FIGO stage III cervical cancer patients versus observation chemoradiation and brachytherapy: complications and 3-years survival

Publication date: Available online 24 May 2016

BackgroundTo compare patterns and rates of early and late complications, and survival outcome in FIGO stage III cervical cancer patients submitted underwent to completion radical hysterectomy after chemo-radiation vs. chemo-radiation alone.MethodsBetween May 1996 and April 2013 150 FIGO stage III cervical cancer patients were treated. We divide patients according to type of treatment: 77 were submitted to standard treatment (Group A), and 73 to completion hysterectomy after chemo-radiation (Group B).ResultsThe baseline characteristics of the 2 groups were superimposable. We observed lower intra-operative and treatment-related early urinary and gastrointestinal complications in Group B with respect to Group A (p < 0.001). Vascular complications were registered only in Group B (p < 0.001). We found a significantly higher rate of local recurrences in the Group A than in the Group B (p < 0.002). We registered 29 deaths in the Group A and 22 in the Group B (p = 0.021). The 3-years disease free survival rate in the Group A and in the Group B was 62.9% and 68.3%, respectively (p = 0.686), and the 3-years overall survival rate in the Group A and in the Group B was 63.2% and 67.7%, respectively (p = 0.675).ConclusionsThis study confirms that radical hysterectomy after CT-RT is an effective therapeutic approach for advanced cervical cancer. Further prospective and randomized studies should be performed in order to solve the question about the standard approach, and how the different pattern of complication could impact on the quality of life.

“Primary Obverse” by @marcogallotta and @BrunoBig at @OneArtSpace
Portraiture as Subject: A Unique Exhibition Featuring Visionaries
Opening Reception June 17, 2016 (6-9pm) On View Until June 27th, 2016 23 Warren St,
New York, NY 10007

“Primary Obverse”, is a two-person exhibition featuring individual and collaborative works from
Marco Gallotta and Bruno Big that investigate the power and importance of the portrait. This exhibition includes artwork that features change-makers, everyday heroes and people who have
influenced their communities and our world in positive and powerful ways.

Although working in different media, Gallotta’s paper-cutting technique along with Big’s graffiti style and engraving work seamlessly together. Through their work, Gallotta and Big celebrate the importance of the icons and influencers they depict. Gallotta’s signature paper cutting technique uses geometric shapes, such as circles, triangles and rectangles. The rigid shapes become irregular and organic, enriched with soft curves alternating with sharp angles. Big uses contemporary techniques such as graffiti, digital illustration and experimental printmaking. “Primary Obverse” is a concept in which the observer discovers the commonality among each of
the icons.

A percentage of “Primary Obverse” proceeds will be donated to the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation @JesseChooseLove , a 501©(3) charitable organization with a commitment to reach students, educators and individuals, nationally and internationally, and provide them with a simple, yet profound formula for choosing love. http://www.jesselewischooselove.org/
