One gallon per day

Okay so I know that drinking water is the most reiterated thing ever and also one whole gallon per day sounds like a ton, but here is how/why I do it and why you might also benefit.

One gallon seems like a shit ton of water to drink, but it’s really not hard. I use the big mason jars that hold 4 cups and all I do is drink 4 in a day (4x4: 16 cups). I always drink with a straw because you actually drink more naturally when you have a straw, idk why. It’s just easier and I can honestly finish a whole quart really quickly because of it.

Anyway, once you start with a gallon a day, there are two main benefits that I have been loving (and I’m sure there are more).

1) bloating/weight loss: often, people think they are hungry but are just dehydrated. If you’re trying to lose weight or just be healthy in general, drinking water will help curb appetite and stop cravings. I’m no expert, but in my personal experience, it had helped me lose a couple pounds without doing anything differently.

2) skin: particularly, those annoying red bumps on your face that aren’t full-on whiteheads so you can’t pop them, but no matter how hard you try, they are always there. You know what I’m talking about. As soon as I started a gallon per day, they DISAPPEARED. I’ve always had decent skin, but this made it even better.

So there ya go. Go forth and glow

Self care

Ok so I really believe that if you feel good about yourself it will radiate through you and you will look beautiful because of your confidence. And self care and healthy lil tips make me feel beautiful so:

Drink water. You know those annoying red bumps on your face that aren’t full on pimples so they’re really hard to get rid of? Drink a gallon of water every day. It sounds like a lot but they will disappear, and water has so many other benefits with skincare and weight loss.

Moisturize! I love almond oil for my face because it’s like coconut oil except it won’t clog your pores. Honestly as long as you consistently moisturize your face and body with some kind of lotion you’ll see benefits, it’s not complicated.

Exfoliate! Okay you can go buy an expensive exfoliated but if you’re ballin on a budget just mix some oil (coconut, olive, almond, etc.) with some sugar for your body, or with baking soda for your face. The baking soda is gentler.

Apple cider vinegar! Shits not tasty but if you add a tablespoon to a big glass of water plus some lemon (and stevia to taste) to begin your day there are benefits to your metabolism and anti bloating properties.

As for holy grail skin care ingredients, I love turmeric. Combine 1 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tbsp flour, 2-3 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp almond or coconut oil and a little bit of honey. Put on face for 20 minutes and wash off. You will glow.

Take baths because they are so great. Light some candles, get some wine or a good book, whatever makes you relaxed. There is literally a bath for everything. Sore muscles? Epsom salt. Trying to balance your skin’s ph (aka you have a dick appointment)? ¾ cup apple cider vinegar. Dry skin? Oil or oatmeal. So many options.

As for makeup, I found that when I quit makeup I found more confidence in myself and less pressure to look perfect, but if you want to beat your face every day then do it! I admire the dedication. Do what makes you feel beautiful because if you feel good, you look good.

Take care of yourself, you deserve it.

Seems like the more I travel the less I need these days. I love refilling banged up gallon water jugs that have lived a hard life in the back of my truck at the store, while getting funny looks like we’re hobos. Or just cooking simple meals in a skillet over campfire coals every night. Those sort of details ground a man into what’s important. Now I clearly see it ain’t about getting to an epic location, or having the neat camera, it’s about how well you loved everyone along the way. Guess what I’m getting at is you don’t need a fancy rig or bunch of prefect gear to get out there and live it.

Part Four: Writing Travel With Non-Humans

If a list were made of the top mistakes made by–particularly fantasy–writers, surely travel, travel times, distances, and the needs of animals during that travel would be right up there. Consider for a moment that Frodo and Sam’s journey took approximately 6 months to get from the Shire to Mount Doom. But Pear, you say, it’s not like they were walking that whole time! They stayed in Rivendell for two months after he agrees to take the ring! And of course, you’d be right, but consider that they are two days in Moria, and it takes the group 7 days to get from Bree to Weathertop, a time frame which was just travel, for the most part. Take a look at it on a map:

And now consider the entirety of the world map:

Taking into consideration breaks for eating and sleeping, difficult terrain, horses, boats, and walking, Tolkien did a fairly good job of making sure the travel times for his world were accurate or at least plausible.

Now consider that 30 miles is the maximum a human can walk in a day without stops and without considering gear, and it’s more accurate to guesstimate ~10-15 miles. It’s ~40 miles from Washington DC to Baltimore, Maryland and can be driven in ~1 hour. Now consider that roads and highways have turned difficult terrain into easily navigable areas, and that cars have drastically lengthened how far and how long we can travel. A team of horses pulling a carriage can expect approximately 50 miles over an 8-12 hour day. A horse will tire from a gallop after approximately 3 miles, but could trot 15 miles without too much strain as long as a few breaks to walk were interspersed. It’s been recorded that on one particular journey, a horse averaged 31 miles per day, though 20 is a more reasonable. (I haven’t put anything regarding companions with wings due to severe variability. Migrating Alpine swifts have been known to fly 200 days straight while other birds don’t even really glide very well. If your companion has wings, do very thorough research into wing bones and strength and do your best.) My point is: We don’t go as far as we think we do, and neither do our creature companions unless we care for them properly.

Long story short, distance matters.

When you’re trying to decide how long it takes to get from one place to another in your story, or attempting to figure out how long it would take an advancing army to reach their destination, consider that our modern view of maps and distances has become severely warped. “It’s not that far,” and “They could make it there in a couple of hours,” and “They’ll be here tomorrow,” are common assumptions for writers, but they might not take into consideration that our characters, creature or otherwise, cannot travel all day without pause, even on roads.

Terrain

Remember to take terrain into consideration. Your creatures accompanying your characters have different physiology than your humanoid characters, so how fast can they travel? Do they have the body strength to be able to carry someone, specifically the spinal strength? Remember that the more people you add to the back of a creature, the slower the creature will travel, even horses. Additionally, consider what their feet are made from. A horse’s hooves are a dense material that takes long usage fairly well (rocks and terrain difficulties aside) which is part of why they (and other hoofed creatures) make good pack animals and “vehicles,” alongside other factors. We don’t go around riding creatures with paws because paws rub raw faster when burdened with weight and asked to go long distances. Creatures traveling on their own legs will travel differently over different terrain. Remember when I mentioned earlier in the series that you should be thinking about where your creature companions originate from? Their physiology will be tailored to travel best over that kind of terrain. If they’re from meadows, rocky mountains will slow them down. Obviously, travel speeds will change depending on the terrain, and the endurance of your creatures will, too. Horses will become lame if rocks or other materials become lodged in their hooves (think about having a rock in your shoe!). Consider how terrain could impact your creature companion in similar ways depending on the construction of their feet.

Food & Water

The most common trope for feeding our humanoid characters on their journey is that they have rations in their packs: dried fruit, tough bread, hunks of cheese, dried meat jerky, etc. What’s often forgotten about is sufficient and appropriate food and water for creature companions. Water retention and metabolism rates vary widely across creatures. You can’t assume that they’ll function like your humanoids do.

When you were planning your creature companion and where they came from, I asked you to consider what kind of eaters they are (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore) to get a good basic idea of what your companions eat. They’re likely not going to be carrying around their food like your humanoids might, so you need to plan for your characters to either be hunting for the creature or to allow the creature to go off and hunt. But don’t just say, “They went off to hunt, returning three hours later with a bloody maw.” You need to know if the area they paused in has the types of foods your creature eats available. Know the environments they’re traveling in; know what’s around and what’s not. It’s okay for your creatures to go without a meal now and then, but it’s not going to make them happy or pleasant to be around the longer they miss out on food. Be aware of how their personality, their travel speed, their fighting capability, and their focus will be impacted when they are forced to go without food.

For emergency water supplies, it’s recommended to carry 1 gallon of water per person per day while cats and dogs generally need 1 gallon each per 3 days. These measures are not taking travel into account, which would raise the predicted amounts. We almost never think about having that much water hanging around our characters for their trek across wherever, but giving our creatures the breaks they will need and the water they’ll need often gets entirely forgotten. Take breaks. All-day travel is hard, hard work on anyone, car or not. Make sure your characters are traveling between places with potable water, whether that’s sources like rivers or cities with wells.

Stress, Sleep, and Special Care

Travel isn’t a walk in the park. It’s a long, grueling journey, filled with difficult decisions and dangerous encounters. There’s socializing and surviving, and it’s not as simple as going out to do the thing. Stress is going to come into play more and more the longer your characters and creatures travel. Think about how this increase in stress will effect your creature companions. Do they know what’s going on? What’s their perspective on the trip? Have they perceived themselves in danger yet? How will they react when they do? How do they deal with being forced to spend a prolonged amount of time in close quarters with others? Is that normal and welcome to them, or is it strange and not preferred? Will they seek out their own space or stick close to the others?

Remember that sleep is not going to be ideal. It may be few and far between, after long days of intense activity, interrupted by attacks, unfulfilling because of discomfort or anxiety, or any number of other things. You still need to consider how your creature would normally try to sleep, and then think about how they could if they needed to, because, trust me, they’re going to need to. Similar questions to those above should be considered including how your creature will handle going some sleepless nights. How will its mood and ability to handle changes in plan be impacted by lack of sleep? How about appetite and willingness to perform? All the problems we encounter with sleep, sleeplessness, interrupted sleep, and less-than-preferred amounts of sleep will need to be considered for your creatures, as much as for your humanoids.

Some creatures will need tending to when travel ceases, whether for a break or at the end of a day. They may need special attention like horses having their tack removed and a nice rub down, or creatures that traveled in a backpack or on a shoulder may need to wander a bit and stretch the legs. Please, please, pay attention to these things. There’s nothing worse than reading poor animal care from a farm boy going on their first big adventure. Casual mentions of the care and attention are sufficient, but completely ignoring this facet leaves out a big part of what travel is with a creature companion. If your creature is a mythical beast, break it down to its root characteristics to determine how they may need to be bedded down for the night. Are your dragons more lizard-like and likely to seek out warm places for the evening, perhaps burrowing for a nest in the ground? Are your hippogryphs able to find enough materials to nest in or do they take more to the horse side of things and sleep standing? Break things down and determine appropriate care for your creatures, then make sure your humanoids are performing those actions they need to ensure comfort for their companions.

Look. Just don’t forget you’ve got another character who has different needs. Don’t pass them off, don’t forget about them, don’t gloss over them. If you’re going to have a creature companion, you need to make sure you’re treating them like any other character and paying attention to their wants and needs the way you do for humanoids. Make sure you’re not asking them to go too far, too fast, without appropriate access to food and water. Take care of your creatures!

Women have acne. Women have acne on their faces, necks, chests, breasts, and backs. Women have oily skin and acne scars and that’s just the beginning of it. Despite how many of us have it, it seems it will never be accepted in society. It seems the more we tell people to cover it up, the more we’re pretending it’s going to go away, and for many women it doesn’t. We see hundreds of ads daily about “fixing our skin” and “hiding our blemishes” as though acne were as simple as putting on a cream and waking up with clear skin. Clear skin is a skin type, not a healthcare routine. Women are sick of being asked if we’ve washed our faces or being told that makeup only makes our acne worse. Sometimes we can’t go outside because what’s on our faces is always on our minds.

Acne is something lots of us have and will continue to have whether or not we eat like Instagram models or drink several gallons of water a day. With something as natural as acne being considered ugly, young people grow up seeing themselves in a negative light and wait until their acne goes away. It’s ridiculous to consider that just a trick of light on a selfie can make us look like we have clear skin, which is when we feel most beautiful. We need to learn we’re beautiful no matter what marks our skin.
I’ve had acne since I was 13 and even though it’s no longer as bad as it was, to this day I struggle with leaving the house makeup-less and uncovered. That’s 5 years of hating how I looked, hundreds of skin creams and many limiting and unrealistic diets to make my acne go away, but now I have learnt it might not be going anywhere. 

Acne will still be there when covered in makeup. Acne is human. No amount of “skin care” can take that away from us. Stop demonising acne in the media and making it ugly.

And so I write this to encourage girls to stop buying from brands which suggest “minimising the appearance of pores”, “give you flawless skin”, or “whiten your skin in up to 3 days”, which tries to make the natural way skin is, seem ugly and unfashionable. You’ll see much more of the exploitation of our appearances through brands as you get older, so stop giving these corporations the satisfaction of preying on young girl’s insecurities for the sake of business. Your skin is not a flaw sis, keep rockin’ it and screw the expectations.

Voltron Marching Band AU

I keep seeing marching band aus out there but I don’t agree with them so I have to make my own. Here goes!

Shiro:
- dedicated tuba
- somehow first chair even though he’s convinced that the rest of his section is better than him???
- he’s very modest
- has lungs like a fucking blimp
- *plays thirty-two 4/4 measures at a super slow tempo*
- *still hasn’t taken a breath*
- hYDRATION
- always making sure the rookies are taking care of themselves
- “did you eat breakfast today??” “are you drinking water???” “don’t strain yourself too much, but remember to practice! :)”
- the band mom
- has the music memorized the day after he gets it and no one understands
- except pidge
- the only one who doesn’t break a sweat during band camp and the others are so concerned

Hunk:

- would play bass guitar during concert season but he loves his saxophone

- he’s on the loading crew because he can carry a sousaphone in each hand and a bass drum on his back

- he is the reason all the rifles have grippers now

Pidge:
- second chair clarinet and super salty
- has a photographic memory so she memorizes music like that
- doesn’t understand bass clef and will never try
- “that’s an e”
- “no pidge this is bass. that’s a g”
- “that’s a fucking e fight me”
- absolutely despises first chair clarinet
- “he’s so cocky I hATE HIM SO MUCH”
- really good with rhythms?
- hunk doesn’t understand this

- puts on so much sunscreen during band camp that she gets paler

- perfect balance
- has literally stood on three fingers and twirled a flag with her foot and could do it again
- very loud
- she will always be heard
- thinks the rookies are cute but she will not put up with their shit
- “lance stop giving everyone makeovers we’re supposed to be learning the routine”
- has made a flower crown for her flag
- so graceful
- has never fallen
- has dropped the thing she was twirling (flags, rifles, sabres, etc) exactly once and that was because she threw a sabre at lance’s head
- coran was not pleased but it was pretty funny
- can do your hair 101 ways but only one of them is acceptable because we all have to look the same, goddammit lance stop with the braid trains
- doesn’t take lance seriously at all and tbh he doesn’t blame her
- took dance classes as a kid and found that she enjoyed it
- but color guard is where she belongs
- (even if some of her fellow guard members *cough*lance*cough* are assholes sometimes)
- one time a toddler ran out onto the field during a show and hugged allura’s legs and she melted

- band camp stories take up half the class time
- if someone doesn’t want to play this part again, or is tired of marching this set, all they have to do say “hey coran did ___ ever happen at your band camp” and coran will never shut up again
- this is a risky move though because if he realizes what you’re doing you will never see the light of day again
- the living embodiment of “one more time” *ten times later* “one more time”
- “if you’re not perfect then we’re not competing”
- was humiliated once by a rival school because of an immature band
- will never let it happen again
- tries (and fails) to reference modern pop culture
- “i think you kids will like this song! it’s kind of like that one the kids sing now with the doors and the painting”
- “the what now”
- “you know, the one by those scared parties”
- he means well
- super chill but if you get on his bad side then you will see hell
- jokes around a lot but he is serious when it comes to music
- and if you’re not then coran will not hesitate in kicking you out
- “if you can’t play your instrument then you wON’T PLAY YOUR INSTRUMENT HOW’S THAT BYE FIND A NEW 5TH PERIOD TEACHER”

a moneyless system is easy to explain. you dont work for money in the current society, you work for the goods and services that money purchases, but it is not the thing that provides your electricity. power isn’t generated by how much cash they can funnel into the furnace. get rid of money and the exchange-value system for the much simpler use-value system that is already in place. if someone argues that people will consume inefficiently, then theyre suggesting that capitalism is somehow more efficient by throwing away billions of pounds of food per year and refusing to shelter homeless people just because they can’t afford it. we have the technology to produce a surplus of basically everything and market mechanisms as we understand them would generally be made unnecessary in any realistic model of human consumption (many capitalists like to come up with absurd quantities of such-and-such commodity [10,000 gallons of water per day, for example] being consumed by one obnoxious person that ruins communism for everybody else, as if thats actually a problem worth a serious investigation)

communist society can’t be drawn up and pointed at like “this is it” because its the future. we can provide a rough framework for how it could function based on how our current society is able to operate (like above when i said that we currently produce a surplus, so we know for a fact that people could be provided for in the future) but we won’t know what problems may arise in the future until we get there. this is absolutely something that can seem disheartening, but for people that are so goal-oriented that they will settle for the current conditions just because they dont want to go through the work of building a better society, they are generally privileged to the point where they dont understand the necessity of radical change. they aren’t the ones suffering every day, so its easy for them to dismiss something that seems like a lot of work, even if its the only chance of survival for a large portion of the population.

the dirty work thing is an easy enough argument to dismiss when you’re well-equipped with the knowledge to do so. it often takes the form of the doctor-janitor story, where a doctor shouldn’t be paid the same as someone that simply takes out the trash, but this is a misunderstanding (and actually quite a funny one. they couldn’t have picked two better professions to compare tbh because its so easy to refute). doctors are certainly important to a (literally) healthy society. they are the people we go to so that we dont get sick and die. janitors are considered the lowest of the low because they dont actually do anything besides mopping or whatever (???), but imagine a world without janitors (or perhaps a world without their function is a better way to put it). without them, we would all get sick and die, same as a world without doctors. all of the dirty countertops in the world would make us all rush to the doctors office as we caught each others illnesses (a funnier thing to think about is how the market would react by suddenly producing a large amount of doctors to meet the demand of sick people, essentially reducing them to just another profession, removing the elitism that surrounds them. this is actually similar to doctors in the early days of capitalism. they were no better than the local trader, butcher, etc because all of them were important to the well-being of the population).

its important to understand this because this is actually similar to the old marxist feminist argument that women’s unpaid labor (in the home) is just as important as mens paid labor (in the factories). this is perhaps a little dated in some ways since capitalism has directly included women in the process of production, but before that, [the western concept of] gender was a clear-cut system of labor, where men produced and women reproduced, both in the sense of reproducing children [again, in terms of western concepts of gender, not actually getting into trans politics here] and also in the sense of reproducing labor. by taking care of the husband and her family, the sole duty of the housewife, she was responsible for the commodity producer (and the future generation of commodity producers and labor reproducers), and by extension, production as a whole. if it weren’t for this process of reproduction of labor on the microscopic level, the production of commodities wouldve been impossible, and this remains true for the doctor and the janitor, two very different jobs that fulfill the same basic purpose: to keep society going. to argue that one is more deserving of pay because one requires more “skill” than another or that one requires more education than another isn’t actually a criticism of socialism, but a realization of the cruelty of capitalism, where only those with enough wealth can afford to educate themselves and sustain their wealth (not to mention that this completely ignores the absurd fact that healthcare is a profitable industry, which it shouldn’t be).

one of the easiest ways around this argument though, especially if you want to get more into what communism would probably look like, is to just say that most of these things would be automated or taken care of on a community level. healthcare could be almost entirely abolished if we were to get to a point where we didnt have competition and the profit motive preventing us from finding cures for diseases just because companies make more money from selling monthly prescriptions than they ever would by actually stopping illnesses in their tracks, and for many other cases, machinery could be introduced in the emergency room (as is already done today) to make the doctors job easier. i think its safe to assume that janitorial work would also benefit from the introduction of machinery into the cleaning process and this work would become less stressful and more accessible to the general public.

(also, on the job question, id be a bad commie if i didnt quote the bit in the german ideology where marx says “… in communist society, where nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, herdsman or critic.”)

Summer Safety

It’s summer! Sun and sand and not a care in the world!
Except, because of the high temperatures, there are things that could go wrong if you aren’t careful, so here are some things I learned in first aid training.

Drink water

I can’t stress this enough. Water is one of the most important things our bodies need to function. It is the basis for 90% of the body’s processes! Dehydration is caused by lack of water, and can lead to many problems.

The general agreement is that you should drink around 2 liters or half a gallon of water a day. Be sure to bring water bottles, especially ones you can refill.

Use Sunscreen

Use sunscreen. Sunscreen blocks high energy rays of light from damaging your skin cells. Not only does it help protect against sunburns but it also greatly decreases your risks of skin cancer developing later on.

Put sunscreen on any area of skin that is exposed to the sun. Rub a thin layer into your skin and re-apply it every couple of hours. The SPF number is how long the sunscreen will be effective, and only has a small effect on how much it protects.

Wear light clothing

I’m not going to tell you what you have to wear, but light, breathable clothing protects against overheating.

Try to avoid using multiple layers, and stick with a windbreaker if you want to wear a jacket. Wear lightweight pants, shorts, or skirts with bright colors to absorb less heat. If you can accomplish this while also protecting from the sun using hats or other clothes, then you’ll be a-ok! As a plus, it’s easier to take off when you get home!

Keep activities light

Exhausting your body while it’s overheating or dehydrated can lead to heat exhaustion, which could potentially be very dangerous. 

Keep activities light and stay in the shade. Try to be nearby a building with air conditioning, and always bring water. If temperatures are nearing 100 degrees, try to stay indoors and reschedule activities to a different day.

Dehydration, Heat Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke

I’ve said already that overheating can be very dangerous, so now I’ll tell you what could happen in these situations.

Dehydration

Signs/symptoms include:

  • dry or sticky mouth
  • dry skin
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • extreme thirst
  • irritability or anger
  • sunken eyes
  • dizziness 

What to do:

  • sip water
  • rest in shade or indoors

EXCESSIVE DEHYDRATION CAN LEAD TO LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS OR DEATH


Heat Exhaustion

Signs/symptoms include:

  • heavy sweating
  • weakness
  • cold, clammy skin
  • pale or ashen skin color
  • fast, weak pulse
  • headache
  • *nausea, vomiting*
  • *fainting, blacking out*

What to do:

  • find shade immediately
  • sit down and rest
  • remove extra clothing, try to have only one layer if possible
  • sip water slowly
  • Do not induce extreme changes of body temperature

CALL 911 IF NAUSEA OR LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS


Heat Stroke

Signs/symptoms include:

  • over 104°F/40°C body temp (hot to the touch) 
  • hot, dry skin 
  • not sweating 
  • rapid, strong pulse 
  • rapid, shallow breathing 
  • flushed skin 
  • pounding headache 
  • muscle cramping 
  • nausia and vomiting 
  • change of behavior/mental state 
  • loss of consciousness 

What to do: 

~~~CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY~~~ 

  • get out of heat
  • cool body down using water or ice 
  • remove excess clothing 
  • drink fluids without caffeine or alcohol
  • check to make sure victim has a pulse, administer CPR if necessary and possible
  • protect head in case of seizures 

Heat stroke is extremely dangerous, seek medical help immediately.

WATER only WILL NOT CLEAR ACNE

I have seen several posts of people saying drinking water has not helped their acne. Some people are lucky enough where a  water only routine keeps their skin clear. Others are unfortunate (like me) where a water only routine will not keep their skin clear.

I’m a firm believer in drinking a gallon of water a day.  Water is key to life and to beautiful skin. Since taking my water intake seriously, I have seen a change in my skin. My skin is more moisturized and looks more healthy.  Water has done wonders for my skin, but it is not my only way of keeping my skin clear of acne. I have developed a routine of toning, moisturizing, and exfoliating my skin.

If you drink lots of water and your skin is still breaking out, you might have to try different ways of fighting acne in addition to drinking water.

Meat-eating environmentalist = Oxymoron

Animal Agriculture and Environmental Destruction

Many people who fancy themselves to be environmentalists are fond of demonizing the automobile industry, calling it the number one agent of global pollution. (Just look at some of the literature emanating from such “mainstream” organizations as Environment California and the Sierra Club.) However, when it comes to environmental destruction, animal agriculture is the elephant in the room that no one wants to acknowledge, confront, or talk about. Animal-based agriculture is the number one cause of deforestation, air pollution, and water pollution. Therefore, those people who still incorporate meat, eggs, or dairy products in their diet cannot claim to be environmentalists.

Here is a summary of how the production of meat, eggs, and dairy products takes a staggering toll on the ecosystem:

Water Pollution

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the runoff from factory farms pollutes our rivers and lakes more than all other industries combined. In the U.S. alone, animals raised for food produce 130 times more excrement than the entire human population—86,000 pounds per second. A typical pig factory farm generates as much raw waste as a city of 50,000 people. Chicken, pig, and cow excrement have polluted over 35,000 miles of rivers in at least 22 states and contaminated groundwater in at least 17 states.

What’s more, chicken, pig, turkey and cow excrement comprise the sole source of all the recent E. Coli, salmonella and listeria outbreaks in which spinach, tomatoes, peanuts, jalapeño peppers, cantaloupe and other plant products have been implicated. E. Coli, salmonella and listeria have only one source: SHIT (human or animal)! Since spinach, peanuts, jalapeños, cantaloupe and tomatoes don’t shit, spinach, peanuts, jalapeños, cantaloupe and tomatoes cannot be blamed for this problem. E. Coli, salmonella and listeria found their way to the plants because people who enslave animals for meat, dairy or eggs contaminate the waterways by dumping nearly 2.7 trillion pounds of manure into America’s lakes, rivers and streams annually. Contaminated water eventually ends up on some of the crops as run-off, passing E. Coli, salmonella and listeria to the consumer. Also, more frighteningly, there are many times when farmers literally spray tons of RAW animal shit directly on the crops. Make no mistake: ALL E. Coli, salmonella and listeria incidents occur because of animal agriculture. Meat, dairy and egg-eaters want to eat billions of land animals. So ConAgra, Smithfield, Tyson, Perdue, etc. MASS PRODUCE billions of land animals far in excess of the numbers that would occur if these animals were left to their own reproductive devices and inclinations. Billions of land animals produce trillions of pounds of excrement.

Chemical Pollution

The majority of pesticide intake comes from animal products because the meat, dairy and egg industries douse billions of animals with chemicals to kill flies and mosquitoes that spread diseases from animal to animal. These chemicals seep through the pores, where they’re permanently stored in the animals’ flesh. Only a small percentage of pesticide intake comes from plant-based foods. But the majority of that residue can be washed away pretty easily. You also have the option of purchasing organic plant foods, which solves the chemical problem altogether. While you might be able to buy some chemical-free animal products (which is pretty hard to do because animal feed is rarely organic), there are still four issues that can never be overcome: slaughterhouse cruelty; the commodification and enslavement of animals; the deleterious effects of consuming animal protein, casein, cholesterol, saturated fats and trans fatty acids; and the environmental destruction and world hunger caused by animal-based agriculture. The government also allows crops set aside as animal feed to be sprayed with 2 to 20 times the amount of chemicals used on crops set aside for human consumption!

Water Use

Raising animals for food consumes nearly half the water used in the United States. Since no one needs to eat an animal in order to survive (except those living in icy and desert settings—see the ETHICS, LAWS and TRADITIONS section), that means fifty percent of all the water in America is wasted on animal-based agriculture. It takes an estimated 800 to 2,500 gallons of water to produce a single pound of beef, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. Maintaining a carnivorous diet for a single person requires 4,200 gallons of water per day. A vegan diet for a single person requires only 300 gallons of water per day.

Land Use

Of all agricultural land in the U.S., nearly 80 percent is used to raise animals for food. More than 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain for animal feed, and about 85 percent of the seven billion tons of topsoil lost in the U.S. each year has been directly attributed to the enslavement of cows. It takes twenty times more land to sate the appetites of meat, dairy and egg-eaters than vegans: those who eat animal products require roughly 3.25 acres of land per person per year to feed themselves, whereas vegans require only 1/6 of an acre per person per year.

Rainforest Depletion

About 214,000 acres of rainforest, comprising an area greater than that of New York City, are destroyed every day. Some of this is for cows to graze, while some of it is to grow crops for animal feed. More than 2.9 million acres of rainforest were destroyed in the 2004-2005 crop season in order to grow crops that feed chickens and other animals in factory farms.

For every pound of hamburger produced in rainforest countries, approximately 220 square feet of rainforest are cleared to grow the required feed. Through this clearing approximately 2,600 pounds of living matter will in the best of circumstances be displaced, or destroyed altogether. This living matter includes roughly 20 to 30 different plant species, over 100 insect species, and dozens of birds, mammals and reptiles. What is more, along with the biomass found in coral reefs, rainforest vegetation is said to be one of the most promising sources of heretofore-undiscovered chemical compounds for treating many diseases that were once thought to be intractable. These resources are simply laid to waste when rainforest is cleared. Even worse, unlike coniferous forest land, tropical rainforest can never be replaced once it has been cleared.

Energy Use

The meat, egg, and dairy industries are heavy consumers of fossil-fuel resources. Raising animals for food requires more than one-third of all the raw materials and fossil fuels used in the United States. The best flesh-food enterprise returns a paltry 34.5 percent of the invested fossil-fuel energy as food energy, measured in terms of caloric expenditure. In contrast, the poorest crop enterprise returns a whopping 328 percent. In other words, the least-efficient plant-based food is nearly ten times as energy-efficient as the most-efficient flesh food!

Air Pollution

Whether you’re a hardcore liberal who believes that humans are responsible for global warming, or a staunch conservative who believes that the warming of the earth is a natural cycle, I think we can all agree that intentionally emitting nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere can be classified as pollution. And pollution has the potential to sicken the earth and its inhabitants. Liberals and conservatives alike must understand that the feces of all animals in the meat, dairy and egg industries emit nitrous oxide and methane, two highly noxious pollutants. Plus, when it comes to carbon dioxide, few people recognize the devastating impact that destroying rainforest to grow crops for animal feed can have on the environment. For example, it’s becoming increasingly well-known that burning one gallon of gasoline in an internal-combustion engine releases about 19 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But clearing and burning enough rainforest to produce just one hamburger releases 165 pounds of carbon dioxide. Veganism, as always, is the best, most efficient way to help the environment. After all, there is no such thing as a meat, cheese, milk, egg-eating environmentalist.

10 Tips for a Fit Summer

Weights before Cardio: Performing weight training first will ensure you’re strongest when you lift. Plus, it  depletes your glycogen storages, so when you do cardio your body will be more likely to burn body fat for energy, helping you get leaner faster than if you did cardio first.

More then Abs: The six-pack may be the centerpiece, but to really impress people, focus on working your entire body, including the chest, back, shoulders, arms, and yes, even your legs. Don’t be too obsessed with ONLY the muscles you see in the mirror, make sure you take the whole body approach. 

Fiber: Increases heart health along with aiding digestion. You will also fill fuller and more satisfied which helps to curb overeating.

Protein: Eating more protein will help the body regulate blood sugar and increase nitrogen for the brain. It will also allow muscles to take in a more constant flow of amino acids in order to properly recover from weight training.

Probiotics: These will help the digestive system breakdown your foods properly. They will help to insure nothing is wasted or stored as fat within the body.

Coconut Oil: Assists with brain health, increases overall energy levels and decreases appetite. 

Hydration: Being dehydrated can cause havoc within a body made up of mostly water. Aim for 8 glasses to a gallon a day depending on size, weight and training regimen. 

HIIT Training: High Intensity Interval Training has been proven to burn more calories during and after training than low intensity steady state cardio, aka jogging. It is also a time saver, thus making it more bang for your buck for those of you who are running on a tight schedule. A 20-minute HIIT session can replace a 30- to 35-minute low intensity session. 

Big Sets: The goal is to perform at least four different exercises in a row without resting. An example would be Squats followed by Leg Presses, Leg Curls and Calf Raises. These type of bigger sets make your workouts more intense, reduce the amount of time you train and aid as a cardiovascular workout as well. 

Shop Smart: When in the grocery store, the healthiest items are not in the isles, but actually on the outside surrounding them on the perimeter. Keep this in mind when you’re shopping, because shopping in these sections will be best for your health, development and even your wallet.

i made a post similar to this a while go and i decided to make another one but instead of giving you tips i’ll be telling you which ones to avoid because theey are harmful/work temporarily/don’t work at all

-instagram makeup artists lie. a lot. you don’t need to buy a $70 face mask to have nice skin, and you don’t need to buy a gold elixir to have soft lips. even so, most face masks are temporary and will only make your skin clear for a day or so. 

-drinking pineapple juice before sex doesn’t do anything. it takes days for the fruit to actually settle into your body.

-douching is fucking terrible for your vagina because 1) it only pushes bacteria farther into your vag 2) NOTHING IS SUPPOSED TO GO UP YOUR VAGINA IT WILL CLEAN ITSELF

-anything that smells like perfume is not meant to go on your face. scented products will irritate your skin/make it itchy. go for something unscented/naturally scented with things like aloe vera, etc.

-don’t invest too much time or money into getting rid of acne scars, they usually fade on their own, and products for fading acne scars usually aren’t that pricey. unless in your case you have extremely bad scarring that calls for laser surgery, don’t stress about it. 

-coconut oil is bad. it’s bad for shaving, it’s bad as a moisturizer, it’s not supposed to go on your skin. coconut oil is supposed to go in your hair and ONLY in your hair. keep it off of your skin. 

-on top of that, rubbing coconut oil on your stretchmarks doesn’t work. in fact, none of the “hoe” tips about stretchmarks actually work. if you really want to get rid of them, invest in a good fading cream.

-like i said previously, nothing is supposed to go up your vagina. not water, not perfume, soap, nothing. you can clean your vulva with a scentless soap, but don’t ever put soap up your vag. your vagina was made to clean itself, and putting things up their will tip your ph.

-layering your skin 8 types of different acne medication will not get rid of your acne.

-it doesn’t matter how much pineapples and cranberries you eat. if your diet is trash your vagina won’t taste any different.

-if you have cystic acne the twitter/tumblr skin tips aren’t going to work for you. invest in a good acne medication, see a dermatologist if possible, because i know first hand that drenching yourself in tea tree oil does not work.

-stay away from skin products that have gold in them. gold is actually and irritant and the tightening you feel when you use a gold infused product is your skin reacting to the gold.

-pore strips can be very damaging and literally rip your skin off if you use them to often

-those spinny brushes that every ig makeup artist promotes damage your skin if you use them everyday. you don’t want to exfoliate your face more than once a week or your skin will become extremely sensitive.

-ACNE IS GENETIC. IF YOU HAVE CYSTIC ACNE THE AMOUNT OF WATER YOU DRINK WON’T GIVE YOU CLEAR SKIN. it doesn’t matter if you drink 2 gallons of water every day. acne is genetic and no amount of water will change that. if you really want clear skin, talk to your doctor/dermatologist, or invest in a good face wash and/or acne cream. what works for girls with natural clear skin isn’t going to work for you.

The Other Side of the Ocean - Chapter 2

This is a Taylor & Joe fanfic. FYI this chapter is long (8800 words), basically two chapters in one.

The next week was a busy one for Taylor. She’d flown back to Nashville to rehearse for her upcoming concert, taking time to check in with her mom and dad. Every time she went home to Tennessee, it was her tradition to go to her mom’s house for a long, relaxing dinner. Taylor loved to cook, but, she also appreciated the opportunity to go home, sink into her mom’s huge couch with a glass of wine and just… be.  Let her mom take care of her.

And Andrea, she wasn’t quiet about the chance to have either or both of her kids back in the house, pamper them, dote on them, make their favorite foods, and just … be their mom.  It just wasn’t the same having adult children. ‘Mom’ takes on a whole new meaning when the kids are grown and out of the house, and she enjoys the chance to be ‘Mom’ again just as much as her kids enjoy the chance to just be (sort of) kids again.  

This time around, Andrea provided a little extra pampering, because as the first half-day of rehearsals wrapped up, Taylor found herself knocked to the ground with a staggering cold virus. She tried Echinacea tea, honey tea, cayenne pepper tea, both a nebulizer and an inhaler, hot steam, drank two gallons of water a day and slept ten hours at night. She spent the whole day on the couch tucked under a giant blanket, Netflix quietly playing from the tv while she dozed on and off. But this cold was relentless. She had the chills, runny nose, fever, headache, body ache, … basically the whole nine yards.

And with the concert just days away, she was slightly freaking out about the fact that her voice sounded like a frog.

Water Fast FAQ

What is a water fast? A water fast is where you abstain from eating food and consume only water for a specific amount of time.

Is there a particular water that I should drink? No. Any water will do, as long as it is just water with noting added.

How long should I go for my first fast? I suggest 3 days for your first fast to get an idea as to what you will be facing.

What was your longest fast? 30 days.

Why do you water fast? Health reasons and weight loss.

What are the benefits of water fasting? Water fasting is a great way to jump start your new healthy life style, because generally speaking it reboots your system and rids all of the poor things you have been putting into your body. People use water fasting to cleanse their system for things such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or simply making a drastic change in dietary plans. I’ve also encountered tons of people who have used water fasting to help/cure eye sight issues, eczema, other skin issues such as acne, bowel issues, stomach issues, and more. There have even been some cases and personal accounts of people water fasting and then having their cancer cells lowered or disappear. However the most common use of water fasting is for weight loss.

What is the difference between restricting/eating disorder and fasting? Generally speaking restricting is about control and stems from a mental illness or other psychological problems. Restricting is not about being healthy and strong and doesn’t have an end date. Where an eating disorder is a mental illness water fasting is about health and strength and is not a long term plan but instead a journey with an intended end date.

How do I start a fast? You want to start a fast by easing into it. Doing so prepares your body for the decrease in food which is to come. Thus I suggest 2-3 days of eating just fruits and veggies and then transitioning into another   2-3 day period where you juice. After doing so you may move into your water fast.

How do I end a fast? You want to end a fast the same way you started it, by EASING out of it. Doing so prepares your body for the reintroduction of food and prevents your body from assuming that food will disappear again. Thus I suggest 2-3 days of just consuming juice/juicing. After these 2-3 days, . you should move on to another 2-3 days of consuming just fruits and veggies. After this period of time you can add back in lean proteins and other non fruit and veggie items.

How do I juice? You have to buy a juicer to make your own juice. Sense these can be expensive you can also buy fresh juice instead.

What juice can I buy if I don’t have a juicer? I generally juice my own fruits and veggies, so I don’t remember the exact brands I bought. So I would go to a farmers market, juice bar, organic market, or whole foods store and look for organic fruit juices there.

When should I drink the juice? I honestly just drank when i would naturally consume food. SO maybe 1-2 cups of juice for breakfast. A cup for a snack. 1-2 cups for lunch. A cup for another snack. 1-2 cups for dinner. And maybe another cup for another snack.

When should I consume the veggies? Once again, I consumed it when I would normally eat. So breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack.

Is there any particular fruit or veggie i should consume while easing in or out of fasting? No anything will really do but leafy greens and things like watermelon (Which has a high water content) are especially good for you.

How much water should i drink drink on a fast? I suggest anywhere between 1-2 gallons a day. You should be drinking constantly the whole day. And peeing frequently. It doesn’t matter when your drinking the water just that it’s constant throughout the day. Sense there about 8 water bottles in a gallon, and I aim for 2 gallons (8 x 2= 16 water bottles)…I either carry around a water bottle and try to fill it/consume 16 bottles before the day ends. Or I carry around a gallon water bottle and try to drink 2 of those before the day ends.

Does it matter if the water is cold? I have been told by experienced people that drinking cold water is better because your body supposedly works harder to convert it to the temperature of your body, but I’m not sure.

How does water fasting work? Basically after about 3 days your body goes into something called ketosis where your body starts to metabolize/consume fat. This is why people use water fasting to lose weight.

Do you gain weight back after a water fast? Yes. Everyone will gain some weight back and it differs for everyone because water weight/water retention is different for everyone.When you start your water fast generally you will see an initial and quick 2-5 pound weight loss. This is because when you eat food you consume sodium (salt) which holds on to any water you consume. When you water fast you are not consuming food, which means no salt, SO there is no sodium in your body to hold on to the water you are drinking. Thus you lose what is called initial water weight.

HOWEVER

When you end your fast and start consuming food again you consume salt and will thus start retaining water again, which will cause generally a few pounds of water weight.

When I finish a water fast how long before I can start another? I have read and been told to wait at least 4 weeks, but I have broken that rule numerous time. Just saying.

Have you gained any weight back? Yes about 20lbs due to two traumatic deaths in my family which resulted in poor eating. 

Do you plan on doing more fasts in the future? Yes. One I’m actually starting tomorrow. 

Can you give a detailed example of what you ate after a water fast.

Should I exercise durring a water fast? No.

Sure but keep in mind this is only an example/ I experiment a lot with food and recipes and it’s impossible for me to remember what I ate because I constantly switch it up and am pulling from different online/book recipes.

Breakfast: Organic oatmeal with cinnamon and cut up bananas on top with a cup of almond milk. 

Snack: Apple and berries

Lunch: Salad with lemon juice and almonds, bits of lean chicken, carrots, cherry tomatoes and water.

Snack: fruit smoothie or maybe a carrots and dip.

Dinner: Stir fry in a kale wrap

Desert: Strawberries and light whip creme. 

What are some foods that are good for you? Nuts, almond milk, coconut, coconut water, coconut milk, fruits, veggies, leafy greens. The closer to the ground the better for your body. 

Do you smell on a water fast? No Can you brush your teeth on a water fast? Some people say no I do because it doesn’t effect weight. I know that a lot of people want to know exactly what i ate and juiced but i just cant tell you that because i didn’t keep track of it when i was fasting and i wing meals and experiment so much with it that i lose track. It took be about three years on and off
I eliminated eating any fast food, no sugary drinks at all. A gallon of water a day. I also, made sure my meals were made in advance or If I didn’t have time , ‘would get them prepped from my home gym “The Lions Den” . I Started going to the gym three times a week and then it became part of my day everyday, so you can say the mist i ho is snout five to six times a day., I do cardio twice a week and strength train three times.

Sooo, today (June 21) is my 2 months on a Keto WOE and this is my progress so far. I have had lots of slip ups lately, but I’m not gonna beat myself up over it. I may not be doing my best or be where I wanna be, but I’m so happy that I’m not where I used to be anymore!!!!!

I’m not sure how much I weigh as I’ve made the ultimate decision to not weigh myself anymore. Because let’s face it, the scale is a fucking cuntsicle lol. I’m not sure of inches lost either.

Some positive things since starting Keto..
-I have become lots more confident
-I have upped my water so much (over a gallon a day)
-I feel tons better
-I sleep so much better at night
-I don’t snore anymore (my mom said I don’t wake her up anymore lol)
-I have lots more self control and discipline (ofc, it does get hard sometimes)
- my portions with food have gotten better
-I don’t have cravings like I used to (when I eat more carbs or sugar I have them)
-I am much more comfortable talking about my health with others
-I have more room between the steering wheel and my stomach
- my arms are short so I can finally hold my hands behind my back
-I am saving more money since eating Keto
-2 months since my last soda
-I love myself much more and not ashamed
-I check myself out a lot more now 😂
-Started out wearing 3x/4x leggings, now I’m at 2x, probably 1x now since I notice they’re baggy around my butt and legs
-And this one may be a lil TMI, but I have a legit sex life now, not as often as I’d like, but it exists hahah (much more comfortable being fully naked, I mean why should I be embarrassed? They know I’m a big girl, what you see is what you get 😛)

I’m honestly just a lot more happy now. And truly, that’s all I want is to be happy. And I finally understand that I need to not wait to reach my goal to be happy, but to be happy every step of the way.
