The Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported on Friday that Hideaki Anno’s studio, Studio Khara, has filed a lawsuit against his former studio Gainax regarding a 100 million yen (about US$878,777) debt that Gainax allegedly owes Khara.
According to the paperwork, Gainax had agreed to pay Khara royalties on anything that Anno was involved with from when he worked at Gainax. Khara supposedly hasn’t made good on this debt yet, leading to this lawsuit.
What does this ultimately mean for Gainax? It’s not entirely clear yet, but we can at least assume that this might make any possibilities of releasing older Gainax titles (such as the original Evangelion TV series) outside of Japan unlikely, until this is all sorted out.
