Modern Family Casts Openly Transgender Child Actor
Eight year-old Jackson Millarker will play a new friend of Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons)

Eight year-old transgender actor Jackson Millarker will guest star in this week’s episode of Modern Family as Lily’s (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) new friend, ABC confirms.

According to the official episode description, Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) think they overhear Lily insulting her new pal, and have to take a “quick look in the mirror” before they teach her a lesson about acceptance.

“So proud to have directed this amazing kid,” the episode’s director, Ryan Case, tweeted. She also posted a photo of herself with Millarker on Instagram.

Modern Family airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Listen.

I don’t care whether you’re abled or disabled.

At 8:30 PM, turn on ABC and watch the first episode of Speechless. This is the first show/movie that I have ever seen that stars an actual boy in a wheelchair as the main character. This is vital. You need to give this as many views as you can. Watch it. Promote it. Talk about it.

I hate cheesy sitcoms as much as the next person but we can’t let this one die off.

If you need proof that disability representation matters just look at this:

This is a screencap from my blind reaction video to the first episode of ABC’s new show, Speechless. Specifically, this is when I saw J.J. for the first time and realized that at twenty-two years old, I have never seen a main character who was in a wheelchair and actually played by an actor in a wheelchair. It was unbelievable. (Seriously, go check this show out!) I’ll post the full video as soon as it uploads but…yeah…suffice to say, I got pretty emotional. Representation matters. Never forget that.
