Let’s Learn About: Max Headroom WTTW Hijacking Incident!
            (***Dig Down Inspiration/Speculation Post***)

Ever since the very first views (and as in the pic, more complete views) of Matt donning the suit and tie, slicked back hair and trippy glasses, I immediately thought back to this video. As it’s an OLD late 80′s event, I remember hearing about this in my childhood days and figured some of my fellow Muser’s may not have been in the know about this.

From the video description:

After a brief intrusion during the sports report on WGN’s 9:00 news, a later broadcast on channel 11 - PBS affiliate: WTTW - of the Doctor Who episode “Horror of Fang Rock” was interrupted by a man wearing a Max Headroom mask. The crazed person uttered mostly gibberish, crudely slammed the Chicago Tribune and its subsidiaries (WGN being one of them), and finally dropped his pants and was spanked by what appears to be a child with a flyswatter. 90-seconds later, the program returned to normal. To this day, he has never been caught.

From wikipedia:

The Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion was a television signal hijacking that occurred in Chicago, Illinois, United States on the evening of November 22, 1987. It is an example of what is known in the television business as broadcast signal intrusion. The intruder was successful in interrupting two broadcast television stations within the course of three hours. After a brief and only partially successful attempt to break into the signal of intended target of WGN-TV, the signal pirates, whose identities were never found, succeeded in getting their broadcast intruded onto WTTW during an episode of the Doctor Who serial “Horror of Fang Rock.” The pirate broadcast, which lasted 90 seconds and was pre-recorded on videotape, featured an individual disguised as television character Max Headroom parodying WGN and television in general. The incident made national headlines[1] and the people responsible have never been identified.

The video itself is disturbing to most (for good reason), I find that for the most part, it’s perfect inspiration for a Muse song: it’s a thinly veiled political (or anti political), middle finger to the mainstream, and let’s not forget how Muse as of the past few albums has been about Resistance and fighting back. This incident was a hijacking/hacking into a mainstream, metropolitan television channel that was viewed by MILLIONS.

As the song Dig Down has yet to be released in full, this is all pure speculation on my part just for shits and gigs; it’s something I always like doing with Muse songs because there is SO much story and subtle cues to take away from ANY single.

What I -do- know for a fact is that we Musers are all creative, nuts (in the good perfectly neurotic way), and are wide open to whatever Muse throws at us.

Finally, for those who can’t view the video right now, I threw together some neato comparison gifs of Matt Bellamy and the Max Headroom hacker.

Melanie & Miranda Wilking!

Who are these super cute and stylish ladies?! They’re the Wilking Sisters! Check them out on @wikingsisters … and get to know them in this fun interview below!

Who is your Muser crush?

Melanie: I feel like this is everyone’s muser crush…

Miranda: Okay, I have mine.

Melanie: …but I would say Cameron Dallas.

Miranda: That was mine!!!

Melanie: He’s a cutie! We have yet to meet him.

Both: I just feel this connection!

What is your favorite thing about each other?

Melanie: My favorite thing about Miranda is that she’s the most kind-hearted person I know. She will go out of her way to please people, or help someone and that’s amazing.

Miranda: Well thank you! My favorite thing about Melanie is she is a go-getter. I feel like whenever I forget something or whatever she has always got my back. So she’s always on top of things. Strong, independent woman!

What is the most annoying thing about each other?

Miranda: I don’t really get annoyed by you!

Melanie: Thank you! I don’t get annoyed by you either!

Miranda: Thanks! But if I had to pick something, I would probably say that you eat food really fast. (Melanie: I do!) She does! She’ll be done like THAT! And I’m like, enjoy your food! But that’s it.

Melanie: So I think the most annoying thing about Miranda, (Miranda: Oh, goodness!) I don’t really get annoyed with her either. BUT, she takes about 50 gajillian selfies before she is content with one. And she looks good in all of them so I don’t understand. She’s like, “Oh no my smile is wrong!” And I’m like, “You look pretty in all of them!” (Miranda: I do take so many!) But hey, if that’s the worst you do, right?

Do you get mistaken for twins a lot?

Melanie: Maybe because we do stuff like that!

Miranda: We say things at the same time always! It gets kinda creepy! But I think we should just learn to accept it.

Melanie: I know, it’s either “are you twins?” and when we say no then they’re like, “Oh you’re older!” But I’m actually younger!

Miranda: But she’s taller!

What’s the background on your phone right now?

Melanie: The background on my phone right now…for my lock screen it’s eyelashes and lips. And for my home screen it’s a bunch of flowers.

Miranda: And for mine - it’s the same for the lock screen and the home screen. It’s the Detroit vs. Everybody … kind of like sign. And it’s lit …

Both: IT’S LIT!!!!! OH!!!!

Miranda: But yeah it’s a sign that I took because we went to the store back home, Detroit vs. Everybody, so I just took a picture of it!

Melanie: We’re from Michigan!

What is your favorite emoji?

Miranda: My favorite emoji I would have to say is the heart-eye emoji! 😍 It just works for every situation. Ya know? It’s just cute!

Melanie: It is cute! My favorite emoji is the red heart ♥️ … but it’s not the glossy red heart❤️ ! It’s the other red heart that’s with the cards, like the deck of cards. It’s like matte, and a little more round!

Are you better at singing or dancing?

Miranda: Um, I don’t really know! I’ve been dancing longer so I feel comfortable dancing. But I also love to sing! So I don’t know.

Melanie: I’m kind of the same way. We’ve been dancing our whole lives so I think I feel more comfortable with dancing, but I like both.

Miranda: I know! But singing is just as fun to do!

What’s your favorite place you’ve ever been?

Melanie: My favorite place that I’ve ever been is actually California where we’re living now, which is… (Miranda: Mine too!) we’re the same person! Yeah, California! I love it! There’s cities, so you feel like you’re in the hustle bustle.

Miranda: There’s always something to do!

Melanie: You can go to the beach! There’s just so much to do here, I absolutely love it.

Miranda: Yeah, same!

Do you have any hidden talents?

Miranda: I would have to say is water-skiing! I love to water skiing!

Melanie: I was always scared to be in the water by myself.

Miranda: She would want me to be in the water with her and send her off. But you’re really good too!

Melanie: Oh no I’m not. My hidden talent is that I can stick out the bones in my back. Kinda gross but I guess it’s a hidden talent.

(She gives us a visual and it was WILD!)

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Miranda: If I could eat one thing for the rest of my life, I would have to say green grapes!

Melanie: She’s a closet grape eater! She’s always eating grapes!

Miranda: I’m obsessed with green grapes! Hey they’re healthy! At least they’re not donuts or something. But I’ll go in the fridge and just sneak some grapes! They’re amazing.

Melanie: If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life, I think pizza. Because you can’t go wrong, and you can have it so many different ways! I feel like you could switch it up and it wouldn’t feel like you’re eating the same thing over and over again. I love pizza.

When did you start dancing?

Melanie: We both started dancing at the age of…

Both: TWO!

Melanie: We were in baby ballet…

Miranda: Baby tap…

Melanie: And as we got older we decided we loved it and we just kept going for it!

Miranda: Dance dance dance … all the time!

Thanks for all the fun answers Melanie and Miranda! We love you @wilkingsisters!
