Who’s Who of the 2017 Grand Prix Series, Part 3: Men
The third part of our Grand Prix previews will cover the talent-packed discipline of men’s singles! Remember to check out our previews of the ice dance and pairs disciplines as well, and our playlist of program recommendations for currently-competing singles skaters.
The last two seasons have brought about a technical revolution in men’s skating the likes of which have never been seen since the advent of triple jumps. Although the men have been attempting quadruple jumps for many years, up until the 2015-16 season, most skaters included 1 quad in the short program and 1 or 2 in the free program, and most attempts were limited to the toeloop and salchow jumps. Everything changed when Chinese teenager Boyang Jin brought a catalytic spark to men’s skating in his senior debut season, making waves with his consistent quad lutz and 6 quad attempts across two programs. Reigning Olympic Champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan then increased his own base value, smashing world records into the ground, and it was all history from there.
The last two seasons have seen the successful completion of the world’s first quad flip, quad loop, and quad lutz and quad flip combinations. The top men of the field now include 2 quads in the short program and 3-6 quads in the free program. The ripple effect has spread throughout the entire men’s field, with more and more skaters attempting the harder quad loop, flip, and lutz, and continually increasing the quantity of quad jumps in their programs. While there are very real concerns about the direction men’s skating is taking and the long-term effects of so many quad jumps on skaters’ health, there is no doubt right now that men’s skating is in a uniquely exciting position. With at least 6 skaters vying for the Olympic podium and potential dark horses waiting in the wings, every competition this season promises to be a thrillingly unpredictable battle.
as a longtime fan it’s a little amusing to me how so many people are like, wow nathan’s like a whole different skater this season! i mean, in a way he is, because his programs show a new side of him, but the general implication is more like, wow i didn’t know nathan could do anything besides quads!
the whole quad machine image is kind of a new development for him tbh. nathan was so impressive as a novice and junior because he was already a good performer and high-quality skater in many areas. he had a bunch of good programs with detailed choreography and range of expression when he was younger. his skating did become noticeably more jump-focused in the last couple of seasons, but i’m so glad that his new programs allow his innate talents to shine through. he didn’t suddenly become an “artist” overnight, the potential was always there, and now everyone can see what older fans saw in him years ago. i don’t see his improvement this season as a completely new development, more like a return to form, except even better. the kid is so talented, i hope he sticks around in skating for a long time.
anyways, if anyone’s interested in watching some of nathan’s earlier programs, here are some of my favorites from over the years:
Do you feel like you had a great theory about something that would happen with FS and it never panned out? Did you really like a plot that AoS began, but never resolved fully (on screen or off)? Do you just have a headcanon that you love that wasn’t dismissed by the show, but hasn’t been explored either?
Then this “Spacetime” challenge is for you!
How it Works:
Create a fanwork (of any kind: fic, gifset, meta, etc. ) involving an old theory/abandoned plot/headcanon for Fitzsimmons
This is not a challenge for predicting the future, but rather to explore the past and things you were excited about
The challenge begins now and lasts until 11:59pm PST on July 28th
On July 31st, a masterpost of all works created for this challenge will be posted

Jemma indulged in a little roll of her eyes at Daisy’s
exaggeratedly-shocked tone, hidden as she was rifling through her closet for
something to wear on her date with Fitz that night. Once Bobbi and Daisy had
found out about the event (Jemma suspected that Fitz had let it slip to Hunter,
who in turn had spilled the beans to Bobbi, who then passed the information
along to Daisy, but she didn’t have any solid proof), the two had showed up at
her doorstep and barged into her flat, demanding details.
Fortunately, Fitz had left earlier that day to head back to
his own flat in order to find some nicer clothes to wear and get ready as well,
so he hadn’t accidentally overheard any of Daisy’s loud and embarrassing
comments and questions.
“I mean, I never thought Fitz would work up the courage – I
was so sure that it would have to be you who made a move for anything to
happen, Jem, and you’ve been insisting for months now that nothing could happen between you guys,” Daisy
continued, gesturing widely with her hands as she went on, her eyes rounded
with continued shock.
Leaning further out of her closet to make their conversation
easier, Jemma reminded her, “I still have to be careful, you know, even though
I’m sure now that Fitz feels something for me in return. And, besides, I still
can’t be guaranteed that it’s the same as how I feel for him.” Ignoring the
eye-roll Daisy gave and the low scoff that issued from Bobbi, she continued, “We
have to take things slowly and cautiously, because well…we aren’t just two
people going on a date – we’re Evelyn’s parents first.” She nodded then to
where Evelyn was happily perched on Bobbi’s lap, playing with a set of plastic
tools that Fitz had delightedly purchased for her recently.
how much do spins really matter in total tps? like it seems like jumps outweigh them by so much
Thanks for the interesting question! We did some math and calculated the base value percentage of each element relative to the total BV for ladies, men, and pairs.
Note: Elements below the double line are in the second half of programs. Jumps performed in the second half of singles programs (marked with “x”) get a 10% BV bonus. Other elements do not get a second half bonus. The second half bonus does not apply to pairs programs. All program layouts are based on performances from the 2017 Grand Prix. Full rotation of jumps and level 4 elements are assumed, as long as the skater has achieved level 4 for that element before.
