Geological hearts

Since it’s Valentine’s day today and love is being celebrated around our beautiful Planet and sole home, I thought I’d share a few Earthly wonders. The first is a spatter of basaltic lava ejected from Kilauea, that mighty shield of the Hawaiian Isles, our second is a cloud above Florida snapped from space, our third is a xenolith, a chunk of foreign material carried up from the world’s depths by rising magma and erupted onto the surface. The fourth is a lush Brazillian piece measuring 7 x 6 x 2 cm and consisting of a 3cm gem rubellite tourmaline sitting on a quartz crystal and my last is a hole in some lava at Nakalele Point in Hawaii. Happy St Valentines to you all.

Kiss me,
Kiss me like the universe is being swallowed by a black hole.
While you’re at it,
Put your hand around my throat and choke me.
Suffocate me like our species suffocates our own freedom.
Merciful enough I know I’m not going to die, but also not sure if I’m going to live.
Don’t just kiss my lips.
Sink below and drown in my curves, from my breasts to my naval.
Let your lips collide with my skin like waves thrusting into the shore.
Our skin starts to taste like the sea as well.
Salty and just the surface of depths so deep there is no reaching them.
So dark, if you do reach them, you may never see the light again.
Because some things aren’t worth knowing. Some depths aren’t so forgiving.
But I don’t feel like I’m drowning when I am at the mercy of your grip around my throat.
Wrapped in cotton sheets and your legs as they pulse against my own.
I feel safe with you.
You’ve seen my bones shaking,
Felt my blood flowing,
But we will leave it at that.
Because I know the deeper we get,
The closer I come to drowning.

RAVENCLAW: “The truth is always an abyss. One must — as in a swimming pool — dare to dive from the quivering springboard of trivial everyday experience and sink into the depths, in order to later rise again — laughing and fighting for breath — to the now doubly illuminated surface of things.” –Gustav Janouch (Conversations with Kafka)

This delicate shell, photographed by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, appears to float serenely in the depths of space, but this apparent calm hides an inner turmoil. The gaseous envelope formed as the expanding blast wave and ejected material from a supernova tore through the nearby interstellar medium. Called SNR B0509-67.5 (or SNR 0509 for short), the bubble is the visible remnant of a powerful stellar explosion in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a small galaxy about 160 000 light-years from Earth. Ripples in the shell’s surface may be caused either by subtle variations in the density of the ambient interstellar gas, or possibly be driven from the interior by fragments from the initial explosion. The bubble-shaped shroud of gas is 23 light-years across and is expanding at more than 18 million km/h.

Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys observed the supernova remnant on 28 October 2006 with a filter that isolates light from the glowing hydrogen seen in the expanding shell. These observations were then combined with visible-light images of the surrounding star field that were imaged with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 on 4 November 2010.

Volcano screams before explosive climax

The subterranean magma plumbing systems that sit beneath volcanoes feed pressurised molten rock toward the surface before eruptions. As the magma flows through deep conduits and cracks, it generates small seismic tremors and earthquakes, typically around magnitude 1. Sometimes these small earthquakes are spasmodic and episodic, as has been seen in the last year or so beneath Iceland’s volcanic surface, but sometimes they appear to take a more harmonic and almost musical tenor, as is reported today in a study of the Redoubt volcano, Alaska.

you spend hours scribbling down the counsel of gods who touch your soul, meditating on broken, disjointed whispers and images surfacing from the depths of your mind, the gods’ divine counsel flickering in and out like a faulty lightbulb in a dimly lit room, you struggle and strain to find meaning through the strobe-lighted, dusty air

in another time you might have been called holy but in this age you are only called strange. you are a relic from a different time; the devotee new and improved, now with an iPhone and automobile. your crystals and incense and tarot cards sit next to DVDs and Pokémon merch, you provide offerings of Coca-Cola and potato chips, all the riches of a modern era where the gods are all but forgotten

‘sacred' used to mean gilded and quiet and sterile, unreachable -to commune with the gods was a privilege for the wealthy and powerful- but now the earthly perks are gone and so are the limitations. the gods select who they please, from under the high school bleachers smoking a joint or sitting in the pews during Sunday morning Mass, from the gutters or the libraries or sitting alone in a cheap bug-infested apartment late into the night, they find you and let you know those old stories are true, they are here

and oh, do they ever have plans for you.

The World Below the Brine

by Walt Whitman

The world below the brine,
Forests at the bottom of the sea, the branches and leaves,
Sea-lettuce, vast lichens, strange flowers and seeds, the thick tangle openings, and pink turf,
Different colors, pale gray and green, purple, white, and gold, the play of light through the water,
Dumb swimmers there among the rocks, coral, gluten, grass, rushes, and the aliment of the swimmers,
Sluggish existences grazing there suspended, or slowly crawling close to the bottom,
The sperm-whale at the surface blowing air and spray, or disporting with his flukes,
The leaden-eyed shark, the walrus, the turtle, the hairy sea-leopard, and the sting-ray,
Passions there, wars, pursuits, tribes, sight in those ocean-depths, breathing that thick-breathing air, as so many do,
The change thence to the sight here, and to the subtle air breathed by beings like us who walk this sphere,
The change onward from ours to that of beings who walk other spheres.

Update From Lake Norman

I posted about a “Nessie” spotted in North Carolina not too long ago. Yet another monster has been spotted in Lake Norman. A 76 year old retired man who lives along the lake said he spotted a “snake-like” creature in the water. He noticed splashing in the water when sitting on his balcony overlooking the lake one day. The long reptile was visible on the surface for about 30 seconds before descending back to the depths. Could this be the same “dinosaur like” creature reported by a park ranger not too long ago that was attacking a duck on the lake’s surface? That creature was identified as looking like “Nessie” which fits the description of a plesiosaur. This most recent encounter describes something else.

Although this creature was “snake like” perhaps it is the same creature. Maybe only the neck of the plesiosaur was spotted by the retired man, leading him to believe the creature was “snake-like.” If there truly is a lake monster residing here, perhaps it swam in through the connecting rivers that empty into the Atlantic. Does this new eyewitness account prove that there truly is something large in the lake that hasn’t been spotted before? Is there a plesiosaur in the lake? Or perhaps a large snake or eel is what the man saw. I eagerly await another update from the residents of Lake Norman, North Carolina.

Mountains below the surface: it’s International Mountain Day!

Located in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Davidson Seamount is an underwater mountain. A submerged volcano rising some 7,250 feet above the sea floor, it’s one of the largest seamounts in US waters! But even with its gargantuan size, the peak of Davidson Seamount lies 4,500 feet below the surface.

Because of its depth and distance from shore, the seamount is relatively undisturbed by human activity. Its surface teems with deep-sea corals, crabs, basket stars, shrimp, and expansive sponge fields harboring other deep sea critters – like this sponge and fish!

In 2002, scientists at Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary began partnering with other organizations like the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to explore the biological importance of the seamount, and how human activity might shape deep-sea ecosystems like this one in years to come. With the data the team collects, we’re able to adapt management practices along the California coast to protect important ecosystems in the deep sea.

anonymous asked:

Do you like how Armin has been described on his Attack on Titan wikia page?

Altogether, I think it’s a very standard, ok surface description. It’s great for looking up something you’re unsure about, but I don’t think you get the depth of the characters from the wiki in general. And it might just be me, but I get a very anime-leaning vibe from the site, so I don’t consult it very often.

There is a point I want to make about Armin being an unreliable narrator, and I’m going to use this ask as my opportunity to touch upon it, but first, I’ll nitpick on some other stuff I found, since you ask:

“Although he appears to be the physically weakest of the 104th Taning Corps, his intelligence and strategic genius makes him an invaluable asset, especially when paired with Hange Zoë’s mind,” the wiki says in the introduction. Well, I have two issues with this: the first is the claim that Armin appears to be the weakest of the 104th. This is why I say the wiki feels eerily anime-favoring; in the anime, things are sometimes simplified, and we get the shortcut, gimmicky version of the manga. Its logic goes like this: “Armin is weak, his issue is inferiority due to that weakness, and he didn’t graduate top ten. Conclusion: he is the weakest of the class.” But this isn’t necessarily true; top ten is the icing on the cake. Did they not see all the unnamed cadets on the training grounds? In the smartpass interview, when asked if he could take down Historia in combat, Armin didn’t even dignify the question with an answer, he merely asked if he really looked that weak. And even if he came in absolute last place – out of what, fifty cadets – it could be due to more than strength: it could be stamina, stealth, etc. Drawing such under-developed conclusions as “he is the weakest” is what I dislike with the anime, and the false narrative that it pushes onto the fans until they believe it. They simplify the characters, and I think in Armin’s case, it’s the reason why so many walk away thinking he is weak and useless, when in reality that description hardly fits him.

Secondly, the Hanji comment, to me, seemed absolutely unnecessary and out of place. Armin is an invaluable asset, period. He can’t be more invaluable by adding an extra component. Invaluable is invaluable. If they wanted to say that he works well with the new commander, that point could find a much more natural place somewhere else in the text. Adding this to the very introduction of Armin’s page, tells me yet again, that the fanbase has become misguided in how they view Armin: he’s not a great add-on, he’s his own asset. He doesn’t give other character an extra edge, he’s his own force to be reckoned with. All of Armin biggest moments, greatest plans, most spectacular wins, were all products of his own mind alone! Yet again, we’ve been fooled by the simplicity that the anime promotes: we assume that, as clever characters, Armin and Hanji are bound to be a dream team – because all smarties get along, right? To some extent, they do produce results together, but they aren’t very compatible outside spitballing; Hanji spins on Armin’s input and leaves him in the dust because they prefer to run their own show, not even considering what part of it comes from Armin’s own skill to keep up. That’s their personality, and I’m not trying to fault them for it, but why mention how well Armin works with Hanji, when the latter doesn’t even recognize Armin’s skill for their own (as further shown in Shiganshina, when Hanji did not so much as mention there being a dilemma worth considering – nor has expressed any sort of sentiment towards Armin’s contribution to the group ever since he was saved by Levi, if ever). Armin’s short period of throwing ball with Hanji is so insignificant to his person (and personality), that I feel like most anything else could be a better way of closing that opening paragraph on him.

Another one: “Armin is rather short for his age,” the wiki page says. While shorter than most of the other prominent teen boys of the story, Armin being particularly short is not something that has ever been given any significance in canon. I’m not saying he’s not short, but this wording makes it sound like it’s a very prominent part of his appearance, which it isn’t. In your teens, you’re in constant growth, and hormones kicking in later than others’, is natural. I looked up average height for 15 year old males (present time), and while he’s shorter than the average of 170 cm, he fit the average of a 14 year old to the decimal. For one, it’s not unusual to be a late bloomer, and also, I have a theory that he might have been 14 and a half throughout the Trost arc: until there is explicit canon proof that Armin is the oldest of the trio (and born the year before Eren), he could very well have been turning 15 throughout most of the story so far; it’s never explicitly said that you had to be 12 to join bootcamp; as with many schools, perhaps you only needed to turn 12 that year, meaning he could have been 11, going on 12 the year of enrollment. Thus, he could be fourteen and a half (and only half a year away from being the average height for his age) back in Trost. What’s more: humans have continuously become taller on average. A hundred years ago, the average was considerably shorter, as the average in the SNK universe could be. Regardless: while Armin could still be shorter than average, there’s absolutely a difference between “below average” and “rather short”. Again, this is an anime-worthy generalization that skews his character to less keen consumers.

Now, on to what I’m really here to talk about: “too timid to defend himself, Armin would often need to rely on his friends (Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman) to protect him from local bullies.” We all know this to be true, right? Why? Because Armin tells us so, repeatedly, through his own narrative. But what he feeds us – as both narrator of the story, and as a main character with frequent inner monologs – is his own skewed perception of his childhood. If we were asked to describe the trio’s dynamic back in Shiganshina, most of us would be inclined to say something along the lines of “Eren and Armin would talk about the outside world while Mikasa listened, and whenever Armin got picked on, his two friends would have to come to his rescue because he was too weak to defend himself.” But this isn’t entirely true, as rather: it’s an image with weight wrongfully placed on Armin’s uselessness – a uselessness he’s put on himself, and that nobody but him actually experiences. Let’s look at what Armin says vs. what the manga shows us:

Armin portrays himself as a hopeless coward faced with his bullies. But in the very first encounter we see him have with them, he talks back and stands up for himself like a badass. In Eren’s flashback in chapter 83, it’s confirmed that Armin never runs away from those bullies, and probably stands his ground the same way he did in the first chapter. While Eren and Mikasa would beat his bullies for him, that’s not the only way to win or be strong – as Eren would agree, deeply impacted by Armin’s resolve as he was. Armin talks about how he was too weak to fight for himself, and he selects the images of him crying on the ground to emphasis this – so we’re fooled to see the same thing he sees – but that’s an image that’s stripped of the positive aspects of him, because it’s his images. What we don’t see from his perspective, but that we see in the real life encounter, as well as Eren’s flashback, is a strong-willed boy with wits to make up for lack of muscle. Does it not take just as much strength to stand your ground (and not hit back), as it takes to wrestle someone to the ground?

Something that further drives home the point that Armin shapes the past to fit his narrative, is how he gives us the impression that the fist fights the trio got into were all for the sake of him. But that actually isn’t the case! Back in chapter 45, we get a description of the same past, through the eyes of an outsider, and I think you’ll find that it’s rather different from Armin’s way of portraying it:

Right before these pages, Mikasa and Armin muse on how sad it is that Eren always seemed to run away from them. That, paired with what Hannes is saying, it appears that the dynamic was thus: the trio had each other’s back and weren’t particularly fond of others, because others weren’t frond of them. Armin would get picked on and helped out by his loyal friends, but Eren would also be a rowdy kid with a lot of energy, who ran off and got himself into trouble that his friends would try to help him out of. As Mikasa seemed to be left behind as well, I’d wager she was more calm and wished Eren would be less antsy. See? This is a dynamic that actually feels more – dynamic! It’s not an entire existence focused on aiding a lesser human (Armin). Armin had his own struggles where others had his back, but that was only one third of this trio’s structure. Yet, his issues blinded him, because he was too ashamed to look past them. So, as narrator, that’s the only third he’s able to pass on to us. We, as viewers, have done him huge injustice by taking it as proof. We’ve missed the point: this is what Armin thinks, and he’s wrong! We aren’t shown his skewed interpretation of his childhood to learn about his past, it’s shown to us so that we can see how warped his self-image is – to see what he’s struggling with! Ultimately, so that we can understand what a major feat it is to have achieved everything he’s achieved! Armin even says it himself early on: it was all in his head!

Yet, the anime – and by extension, big parts of the fandom (and the wiki) – simplifies his character. They choose to go with Armin’s own accounts, and so we’re continuously fed this (third of a) narrative that is unhealthy and incorrect, by way of excluding context. Armin was helped out by his friends – like everyone with good friends is – and so was Eren! That isn’t a detrimental sign of weakness to Armin’s character – not until Armin starts telling us it is. Having friend who are willing to fight for you, doesn’t equal you being weak and a burden. Our mistake is that we didn’t fact check. Coming back to the wiki, I’m not overly excited about them presenting it the way Armin does, because it adheres to the simplification and “no questions asked” approach that the anime has. But again, I know this, so I steer clear of the site, personally.

As a side note: in Hannes’ memories, Armin has barged into the midst of the fight and is holding back Eren, so it doesn’t appear that he was afraid of going hands-on in a non-violent way – further proving that him not being violent for his own defense, was at least to some degree a conscious choice instead of a weak back-down).

Other than that, yeah, the wiki gives a pretty standard, ok surface description, if you need a quick gloss-over refresher on Armin Arlert.

After the nuclear pollution of the great war, the atmosphere decayed to a point where life could no longer be sustained outdoors. We moved into concrete buildings and planted in our living spaces the few seeds that had survived. However, through technological meditation, images and dreams from the depths of our subconscious can be downloaded directly from our brains and manifested as physical projections of light on the surface of our concrete walls. We have believed the visitors from space will arrive at any time, ever since the voyageur transmitted evidence of extraterrestrial life in 2096.

when we grew tired of the strategic elimination of black youth by the police state, we cried to the heavens, and then she appeared from the sky, strong. Dressed in Gold and Ankara electrifying the sea, cradling the sparkling waters sprouting from the wisdom of our leaders who were assassinated, imprisoned and exiled. when we asked her who we were, she pointed us in the direction of the stars. we are stars emitting energy and light , rebuilding a civilization of love in our minds.

Okay okay okay I have to point out this excellent contrast of two quotes, which are just two pages away from each other–

Vimes sank gloomily into his armchair.  It was, he felt, a persistent flaw in his wife’s otherwise practical and sensible character that she believed, against all evidence, that he was a man of many talents.  He KNEW he had hidden depths.  There was nothing in them that he’d like to see float to the surface.  They contained things that should be left to lie.

And

She was very proud of Sam.  He worked hard for a lot of people.  He cared about people who weren’t important.  He always had far more to cope with than was good for him.  He was the most CIVILIZED man she’d ever met.  Not a gentleman, thank goodness, but a gentle man.

Oh look it’s How You See Yourself versus How Your Loved Ones See You.  It’s Vimes knowing he has a darkness inside, and constantly fighting it, see?  Such that Sybil can’t even fathom him being bad.  Because he wouldn’t be.  He is a good man, because what he does is good, even if inside he thinks he is bad or sometimes even thinks bad thoughts.  He is so much better than he realizes, or wants to realize.  And Sybil loves him, and she is so good, too.
