Papa (Jikook)

Little fingers that were wrapped around his thumb, Jungkook remembers distinctly the day he had first seen his daughter.

His first instinct was to freeze right at the spot just staring at Jimin who was much braver and made his way to the nurse holding the baby and taking her into his arms.

“Hey, baby girl,” Jimin said looking at the baby.

Jungkook was still unable to move just staring at Jimin.

Jimin looked up at Jungkook.

“You wanna hold her?”

Jungkook nodded in less than a second. He had wanted this so bad as he saw Jimin make his way to him and then handing her to him.

Jungkook held her like she was made of glass. He was scared he would hurt her in some way. She was so fragile, so small fast asleep, her eyes tight shut and her little fingers curled up into a fist.

Jungkook felt a surge of emotions he had never felt before.

He was happy as he could feel tears well up in his eyes.

“Hey baby,” he said. “I am your papa”

Next, to him, Jimin cracked a smile looking at them fondly.

“She is our daughter, Jimin,” Jungkook said in a way that he couldn’t believe his own words.

Jimin nodded tearing up.

“Yeah she is our little girl,” he said.

Jungkook looked back at the sleeping girl and smiled as he let Jimin take her away and cradling her into his arms.

He stood close by watching her sleep as he held her little hand and then pressed a swift kiss.

“Papa loves you so much,”

The baby didn’t react at all expect for grabbing one of Jungkook’s fingers in between her fist and Jungkook looked at Jimin who was tearing up again and he looked back at the little girl sleeping soundly her hand still around Jungkook’s finger.

At that time Jungkook was sure this was the best moment of his life.

Jungkook remembers all the sleepless night they had when Jieun would cry the whole night and they would have no idea why.

Jimin would try his best to stop her from crying as he would walk around the room rocking her to sleep.

It almost always worked and Jieun would be asleep in the next hour or so leaving a sleep-deprived Jimin who would be very cranky the next morning until Jungkook would get him his cup of coffee.

But they both knew they could do nothing about it as Jieun would fall asleep only when she was held by Jimin.

She would start crying the moment Jungkook tried to rock her to sleep. So now he had stopped trying and instead just watched his husband do it.

Jungkook couldn’t help but feel like he wasn’t being a good father to Jieun. She always preferred her dad over her papa. Jimin rocked her to sleep, fed her and dressed her every day and when Jungkook so much as even tried to do anything it would only resulting in crying forcing Jimin to take her away from Jungkook.

In fact, Jieun seemed more comfortable around Seokjin as he was the only person Jimin allowed to hold Jieun. Jimin simply didn’t trust Taehyung and Hoseok with a baby. And for Namjoon and Yoongi they were content in watching from a distance. She would climb on Seokjin’s lap and let him hold her.

Despite Jimin’s reassurances, Jungkook felt he couldn’t connect with his daughter.

“She is only nine months old, Kookie,” Jimin said when Jungkook had confessed what he had felt. “I am sure she will be more comfortable when she grows up”

Jungkook just nodded sighing.

“Don’t worry, okay?” Jimin said as he pressed a kiss on Jungkook’s forehead.

Jungkook nodded.

Just then he heard a crying voice. It was Jieun.

“I’ll be right back,” Jimin said as he left and came back with Jieun who had now stopped crying and was holding a rattle in her hand almost smiling at Jimin.

“She was crying because she dropped her rattle,” Jimin said as he kissed her on the cheek.

Jungkook nodded smiling. All he wanted was to hold his daughter.

That night Jieun was crying again and had been doing it for over an hour. Jungkook had long given tried to sleeping as he saw Jimin walking in the room patting her back and rock her.

“Jungkook,” Jimin said. “She won’t stop

Jimin sounded weary and he looked really tired too with bags under his eyes. It was 1 am already and they were supposed to wake around 7. They hardly got any sleep.

“You gave her the toys?” Jungkook asked.

“Yes,” he said. “She still won’t stop crying”

Jimin bit his lip. He sounded worried.

“Kookie-yah what if she is sick?”

“No, no Jimin, she is probably not feeling sleep yet,” he said. Jieun slept a lot during the day.

Jungkook at least hoped that was the case. He remembers when Jieun had a developed a fever overnight and how much Jimin had freaked out. Crying his eyes out as he was that worried despite Jungkook assuring him that their daughter would be fine.

Jimin had stayed home for the next two days just to take care of Jieun.

Lost in his thoughts he noticed Jimin had already started tearing up. He always was very sensitive especially when it came to Jieun.

“Jungkook, I think we should call the doctor,” he said.

“Is she running a fever?” Jungkook asked.

“No, her body temperature is fine but what if she is in pain or something?” he asked. “Just call the doctor”

Jungkook nodded getting up as Jimin kept on rocking Jieun who was crying even more now.

“Take my phone, I have the doctor’s number,” Jimin said.

Jungkook nodded taking Jimin’s phone from the nightstand and looked at the doctor’s number as Jimin watched with a worried expression.

The phone kept ringing but no one picked. Jungkook tried again. There was still no response. Jungkook kept calling the doctor but he gave up the 15th time there was no response.

“He is not picking up,” he said.

“What are we gonna do now?” Jimin said more to himself.

He was full blown crying now.

“Should we look for some doctor who is open?” Jungkook asked.

“That’s our only option I guess,” Jimin said.

Jungkook hugged Jimin.

“It’s gonna be okay,” he said.

Jimin nodded as Jungkook kissed his forehead.

“It’s cold outside,” Jimin said. “I’ll get Jieun’s winter clothes from the other room”

Jungkook nodded.

“Give her to me,”

“Are you…”

“Yes,” Jungkook said.

Jimin carefully handed Jungkook Jieun who was wailing even more loudly now. Jimin bit his lip but left the room immediately to get Jieun’s clothes.

Jungkook stood holding Jieun awkwardly trying to rock her to sleep as she cried.

And Jungkook didn’t know why but for some reason he began singing to Jieun. It was a little song that he had written for Jimin back in their high school days to woo him. It had worked well at least on Jimin considering they were married now.

And it seemed to work on Jieun too as her cries were much quieter. She was listening to Jungkook’s song while looking at him with her wide innocent eyes, her little fists clutching Jungkook’s shirt. She had now stopped crying.

Jungkook was shocked and stopped singing and then Jieun’s face had turned into a frown and Jungkook immediately began singing again and then he saw Jieun actually smiling and it made Jungkook feel all kinds of happiness as never before his daughter had ever smiled when she was in his arms.

Jungkook smiled a little and continued singing when Jimin came into the room holding Jieun’s clothes.

“Is she not crying anymore?” Jimin asked.

Jungkook shook his head no as he kept on singing and rocking her. His daughter whose head was now rested on his chest, her eyelids were heavy from sleep.

In a few minutes, Jieun was fast asleep on Jungkook’s chest and Jungkook didn’t have the heart to let her go as he watched her in awe.

“How did you get her to sleep?” Jimin asked.

“I sang to her,” Jungkook answered.

Jimin smiled a little.

“Come on I’ll put her in her cot,”

Jungkook nodded hesitantly letting Jieun go as Jimin made her sleep in the cot before letting out a big yawn.

“You should get some sleep Jiminie,” Jungkook said.

Jimin nodded rubbing his eyes before smiling at Jungkook.

“See she let you hold her,” he said. “She loves you”

“Yeah,” Jungkook said fondly.

“And I love you too,”

“I love you too,” Jungkook said kissing Jimin. “Now let’s get some sleep”

Jimin nodded as they both got in their bed and Jungkook threw his hand around Jimin’s waist and pulled him closer before pressing a little kiss on the nape of his neck.

In a few minutes, he could already hear Jimin’s light snores and all he could think about how lucky he had gotten in life.

He had a husband like Jimin and they had a daughter together. Jungkook felt like he was quite honestly the luckiest man in the world for having a perfect little family.

With that thought in his mind, he fell asleep smiling to himself.

Over the course of the next few days, it had become routine for Jungkook to sing for Jieun at bedtime. She would only fall asleep when it was Jungkook rocking her while singing to her.

Jungkook loved the fact that he was the only one who could put Jieun sleep. He would smile to himself as he saw Jieun falling asleep midway to the song her little fists balled up. He would put her in her crib.

He loved that he could bond with his daughter because throughout the whole day Jieun still clung onto Jimin for him to feed her and bathe her.

But at night she only slept at the sound of Jungkook’s voice singing to her.

Jieun’s first birthday was a very joyous affair for the Jeon family.

Seokjin had shown up to help Jimin cook for the party guests who were mostly their co-workers and neighbors. Hoseok and Taehyung were in charge of the decorations while Yoongi and Namjoon mostly just sat on the sofa only to be yelled at by Seokjin to move their asses and do something so they decided to help with the decorations while Jungkook was in the kitchen icing the cake for Jimin as he had gone to dress Jieun.

At about 5 pm everyone started coming in with gifts and both Jungkook and Jimin’s parents showed up too eager to see the birthday girl.

Jimin came out of their room holding Jieun who was dressed in a long pink frilly frock and wearing a crown clutching Jimin’s shirt as she stared around at the unfamiliar faces of everyone.

Jimin’s mom took her in her arms and she was surprisingly calm and she didn’t shed a single tear when she handed Jieun to Jungkook’s parents who began playing with the little girl and she was even smiling at them.

Soon it was time to cut the cake that Seokjin brought out and set on the table. Yoongi lit the candle and everyone began singing Happy Birthday as Jieun watched with big curious eyes and Jimin blew the candle for Jieun and then both of them cut the cake together while holding Jieun’s hand and everyone burst out clapping and Jimin kissed Jieun.

Jimin handed Jieun to Jungkook and both he and Seokjin went to the kitchen to get the food and Jungkook made his way to everyone to say hi and introduce Jieun who was seemingly nervous and immediately buried her head in Jungkook’s chest when any stranger tried to get her in their arms and Jungkook gently patted her back whispering a song in her ear and she calmed down almost immediately.

The food was a hit among everyone and Jieun had fallen asleep after Jungkook singing to her and Jimin took her into the room and put her in the crib and he returned to interact with the guests and receive their gifts. Two hours later everyone finally left including both of their parents. Seokjin and Namjoon were the last to leave as they both helped them to clean up.

Jimin was particularly grateful as he sat back on the couch sighing in exhaustion.

“You must be tired,” Jungkook said.

“Very,”

“Come on now I’ll carry you to bed,”

“No need…”

But Jungkook had already lifted up Jimin and was carrying him to their bedroom making Jimin laugh when he finally put him down.

“God you’re cheesy,” Jimin said making Jungkook smile as he leaned in and kissed Jimin his hands holding Jimin’s in an almost firm grip and Jimin opened his mouth letting Jungkook explore his mouth with his tongue and they were interrupted by a loud cry from Jieun.

“I’ll be right back,” Jimin said breaking away as he stood up and went to the bedroom and returned a few minutes later.

“She just cried for no reason,” Jimin said as he sat back on the bed. “Kids can be so exhausting sometimes”

‘She is already one,” Jungkook sighed. “She’ll be off to school in no time”

“Yeah,”

“And then middle school,” Jungkook said. “Then high school”

“That’s a long time,”

“She’ll have a boyfriend,” Jungkook said with a shudder. “Can you even imagine that?”

“Kookie she is still only one,”

“I won’t let her date some random guy and he would have to be approved by me,”

“Kookie…”

“I can’t imagine someone hurting my little girl’s heart. I’ll make sure that anyone who dares to hurt her pays a price,”

“Jungkook, you are being a little ridiculous now,” Jimin said amused by his husband’s thoughts.

“I don’t want her to grow up Jiminie,” he said. “I want her to stay little forever”

‘That’s not possible…,”

“She is growing up too fast,” Jungkook said suddenly emotional.

Jimin hugged him gently patting his back.

“I know how you feel Kookie but trust me you’ll cope,”

Jungkook nodded.

“Come on let’s sleep now,”

Jimin got up and turned off the lamp before climbing on the bed with Jungkook who cuddled up closer to him and they fell asleep.

If there is anything that made Jungkook tear up the most it was the day Jieun had spoken her first words.

It was a Sunday afternoon and both Jimin and Jungkook were seated on their living room floor watching Jieun building blocks and then sweeping them down again and being particularly gleeful about it as she clapped her hands and laughed.

This was the tenth time she was doing this as she put blocks upon blocks and then kicked it watching it fall on the ground and laughing again.

She looked at her fathers and both of them clapped making her even happier as she started doing it again her tongue out in concentration placing one block over the other very carefully until it was tall enough and this time she made a sweeping motion and send the blocks flying down in different directions of the room and that made her, even more, happier as she let out a particular loud yelp and clapped her hands and Jungkook’s heart melted.

“Jieun,” he said. “Come to papa”

Jieun turned around to look at Jungkook with big curious eyes as Jungkook called her again.

“Jieun, come to papa,”

Jieun was silently watching Jungkook and then smiled.

“Come to papa,” Jungkook said.

“Papa,” Jieun said.

Both Jungkook and Jimin froze looking at each other and then back at Jieun.

“Jieun honey say papa again,” Jimin said.

“Papa,” she repeated.

“Oh my god,” Jungkook said his hands covering his face. “She said, papa”

“Papa,”

Jimin had begun to tear up and Jungkook grabbed his phone and pressed record.

“Honey say, papa,”

“Papa,” she said laughing and Jungkook sent the clip to everyone he knew typing that his daughter has finally started to talk.

Jimin was still shocked as he took Jieun into his arms.

“See honey that’s your Papa,” he said pointing to Jungkook.

“Papa,” she said again and Jungkook teared up too as he kissed Jieun.

“Pap loves you so much,” he said and Jimin smiled kissing her too.

It was the best day for them.

Before becoming a father Jungkook always thought parents were annoying and often times a little too invested in their baby’s lives but he watched himself turn into one of them as everything Jieun did was so exciting for him.

He remembered the time Jieun wanted to eat just like the way her dads did and grabbed her spoon off of Jimin’s hands and began eating of course half of it was on her clothes and the other around her face and just a little of it went in her mouth but Jungkook was recording it so proudly as he watched her daughter trying to feed herself and Jimin laughed before intervening because she was getting her food into her hair too and Jungkook was overcome with emotion over something as small as her daughter trying to eat all by herself.

“You did good Jieun,” he said kissing her head.

“Papa,” she said clapping her hands making Jimin laugh and Jungkook kissed her again.

He particularly remembers the time Jieun had been 2 and tried dressing in a dress without Jimin’s help and she somehow managed to before Jimin zipped it up and she danced with happiness leaning in to kiss Jimin.

“Thank you daddy,” she said as Jimin kissed her little nose and of course Jungkook was recording all of it a light smile on his lips because it was only at times like this when he realized how blessed he was to have his little family and he felt like he was the happiest man on earth.

Jimin and Jungkook’s friends or as Jieun liked to call them ‘Hyungs’ (just because Jungkook did too) managed to spoil her rotten.

Whenever Jieun was with Taehyung he got her every candy she ever wanted, she just had to point to it and Taehyung would buy it all for his little niece because he couldn’t resist those big brown eyes much to Jimin’s dismay.

“Jiminie,” Taehyung would say. “She is a kid let her have candy”

And there was Hoseok who believed he had the best taste when it came to baby fashion and Jungkook was convinced that he would buy whole racks of clothes if he wasn’t stopped by someone because he loved to see Jieun dress up in various outfits and take pictures of her.

They didn’t even have so much space for the clothes that Hoseok would get Jieun.

Jieun’s favorite was, however, Yoongi because he made the silliest faces to her and she would keep laughing at him as he stuck out his tongue or made weird noises. She never wanted to leave Yoongi’s side and Yoongi was more than happy to entertain the little child. That was the only time he let himself loose and be immature.

Namjoon and Jin liked Jieun and treated her like their own daughter and now that Jieun had grown up a bit Namjoon was over his fear of dropping her and would usually hold her and play with her.

“Someday I hope we can have a daughter like her,” Jungkook heard Jin say. “Or a son I don’t mind”

“Yeah,” Namjoon simply said but he looked horrified and Jungkook understood because he had the same reaction when Jimin had brought up adopting a kid but now he couldn’t imagine a life without his daughter Jieun.

She was the most precious thing to him in the world.

Somewhere between the diapers and the first words and all that crying all night Jieun grew up. It was surreal because Jungkook remembers the day he first held her as vividly as if he had happened just yesterday and now it was time for her to start school and Jungkook was nervous as he stared at the ceiling not being able to sleep.

“You okay?” Jimin asked as he lied down on Jungkook’s chest.

“Yeah,”

“You’re not, I can tell,”

Jungkook sighed.

“I am worried,”

“What is it?” Jimin asked.

“Jieun is starting her school tomorrow,”

“Yeah,”

“I am very nervous,”

“You know she is gonna be okay,”

“Yes, but…,”

“Kookie don’t worry okay our Jieun is a brave girl,”

Jungkook nodded.

“The other kids…,”

“She’ll be fine trust me,” Jimin said softly.

Jungkook nodded biting his lip.

“Now go to sleep we have an early start,”

Jungkook nodded kissing Jimin before they both fell asleep.

The next day was a hectic start. Jungkook was preparing a lunch of sandwiches for Jieun while Jimin dressed her in her uniform and when Jungkook finally saw her he cried because he just realized his daughter really wasn’t a baby anymore as he grabbed his camera and took some pictures.

Both Jimin and Jungkook were dropping their daughter together for her big day and as they pulled up Jungkook saw a lot of parents dropping off their kids.

“Hey honey,” Jimin said. “It’s time to go, we are gonna pick you up very soon okay and we love you”

Jungkook was looking at his daughter who had a frown on her face when she suddenly grabbed Jungkook’s hands.

“Papa will you come with me to the class?’” she asked.

Jungkook looked at Jimin before nodding with a smile.

“Of course honey,”

Jieun smiled a little as they both got out of the car and Jieun took Jungkook’s hands.

Anyone could tell that Jieun seemed the closest to Jimin. She hadn’t changed much from the time she was a baby and still needed Jimin but there were times when she only wanted her papa with her and no one else and Jungkook was grateful because they shared a special bond now.

Jieun suddenly stopped and tugged at Jungook’s hands.

“I don’t wanna go,” she said almost looking close to tears.

Jungkook kneeled down and cupped her face.

“You are brave…,”

“No no I don’t want to go to school. I want to be with you and daddy,”

“I know honey…,”

“Papa please,” Jieun said. “I don’t like the other kids they don’t like me”

That part was true as Jieun didn’t mix well with kids her age but it had nothing to do with her but instead because she had two dads.

“Honey you never know you can make a best friend in there,”

“No no, they don’t talk to me,” she said hugging Jungkook as he hugged her back and patted her.

“Jieun, did I ever tell you that never liked me when you were a baby?” Jungkook asked.

Jieun seemed intrigued enough as she wiped her tears and looked at Jungkook.

“No, I always loved you, papa,”

Jungkook laughed.

“When you were a baby you would never like to get into my arms. If I ever tried to hold you, you would start crying,”

“Really?”

Jungkook nodded.

“But then one day I sang to you and then you let me hold you,” Jungkook said.

“Oh,”

“You see people change, “Jungkook said. “It might seem that they don’t like you but they will okay?”

Jieun nodded.

“You didn’t like me but now you call me papa and hug me,” he said.

“You are my favorite,” Jieun blurted out.

“Really?” Jungkook laughed. “I always thought daddy was your favorite”

“I love daddy too but you always let me stay up late and get me ice cream,”

Jungkook laughed.

“I’ll get you ice cream today too if you go in there,”

“Rocky Road?” Jieun asked.

“Anything you want,” Jungkook smiled.

“I love you, papa,”

“I love you too Jieun,” Jungkook said as he kissed her forehead. “Now come on go in there”

Jieun nodded.

“Daddy and I will come to get you okay?”

Jieun nodded.

“Bye Jieun do well,” Jungkook said as he waved towards Jieun who was taking hesitant steps towards the class as she waved back until she was out of sight in between all the other little kids.

Jungkook smiled to himself as he walked back to their car.

Papa’s little girl had finally grown up.

For those interested, CP appeared in this week's Life & Style in the Who Wore it Smarter? segment where they rate 6 actresses wearing the same type of outfit. This week it was 'frilly patterned frocks'. CP got third place with the description: "The Flash star CP dress serves up fashion justice! The "tattoo" print adds a retro vibe and the fit-and-flare style carves out curves. A metallic clutch would have upped the dazzle for a fab finish".

Thanks for the heads up! Not sure how to get a better quality picture online, but it’s on pgs. 50-51 of June 9th’s Life & Style for those who are interested!

For the Draw Your Inquisitor thingy, I know she's not your Inquisitor, but how about 3 for Abner because it would be fucking amazing to see how pissed she would be... I have my reasons. XD

After lots of prodding and begging, Josie finally convinced Abner to sit for a portrait - and even wear some frilly frock while doing so - under one condition, she couldn’t be in the room while Abner was painted.

Abner told the artist that if he change one single thing about her, he’d never live to paint another flouncy portrait.

MASTERLIST

Forget whatever crap people have been feeding you- hell is a cold place.

Its got an old, battered chalkboard in the front that’s tilting with age and about thirty students  behind it scribbling nonsense into their store-bought notebook binders.

You grudgingly accepted this, one particularly freezing and pouring Monday morning, the sleeves of your sweaters pulled up to obtain maximum warmth. Theology class had never been one of your favourite classes, and neither had been being forced into a frilly white frock for Sunday Mass.

You cringed at the memory, scribbling absent-mindedly into the margins of your blue-lined notebook paper, praying for the end of the world rather than have to listen to twenty one more minutes of this light-from-the-sky nonsense. Shrugging your pen onto the paper again, you threw your head back in frustration and decided you’d do something else as doodling profanities had inevitably lost its appeal. Ruffling through the contents of your purse, your hand grazing against several candy wrappers you had meant to thrown out the day before, your fingers finally wraps around the pack of cigarettes that you’d been searching for. Pulling out  the white, little death stick, you hastily turned your back on the lecture and grabbed a lighter from where you kept it tucked inside your boot.

You knew smoking  in class was a bit of  a stretch even for you, but something about a teacher preaching about following moral standards sparked a hunger in you to defy it. Resting the little stick between your lips, you balanced it using your forefingers and flicked the lighter on, allowing the end to blaze slightly.

Leaning out a little against the window hanging to your left, you took  a huge drag before columns of smoke leave your mouth and make its path through the dewy morning air. You weren’t worried about getting caught at all. The teacher  hardly ever roamed the classroom as she lectured and the students drowning in their scarves and heavy coats probably couldn’t give two shits what the hell you were doing in the back anyway.

You were almost through, the warmth from the fire filling your body with its drug when the spawn of the devil herself plucks the little troublemaker from between your fingertips and crosses her arms like Christmas had come early this year.

“Smoking in class, are we?” She smirks, showing off her equisite skill of having more lipstick on her teeth than she did her actual mouth.

I don’t agree that she needed a metallic clutch (although didn’t she have one?) to up anything, it was a super cute look. But nice!

Okay so last night during Phantom of the Opera I was thinking about Solangelo and I imagined the Phantom as Nico and Christine as Will right

Then I imagined Will in a frilly white frock hitting an impossibly high note while Nico (dressed as the Phantom) covers his ears in pain and knocks off his mask and it took all my willpower not to burst out into laughter

A Vial of Venom (SFW)

AN: I’m nearly done with the examinations and I felt the undeniable urge to put up the squire-lady one-shot I said I would write almost aeons ago. This is a short HartBig piece that is strange and short and inspired by a fantasy novel I read most recently. It’s nothing impressive, but I wanted to capture a single moment instead of a flurry of chronologically sorted snap-shots that would fail to encapsulate the essence of a first meeting. I understand this thing ends on a cliff-hanger and gaping chasm that leaves need for more plot progression, but I think I like this one left like that. So yes, mediaeval HartBig! On with the show!

I came upon the early travellers in the morning. I had slept more soundly than most other nights, having squandered a lot of the blood of the family’s only cow on safe lodging at a less-than-rowdy inn and a breakfast fit for a king and some more.

Sights set on Damford, I put my last copper pieces into the calloused palm of a scruffy man whose beard was both equal parts seemingly impenetrable and tangled with bits of rotting food. While I was keen on the general structure of that impressive mass of facial hair, the women in his wagon were far more interested in the stories of how it came to be blacker than the flames on his head, which were more fiery red than one of good sense would have expected of a middle-aged man tumbling past his forties too quickly. The only girl among the travellers looked across the caravan at me from her seat, picking bark off a piece of trunk and whispering something about that having been the true result of the inability to handle fire for cooking and a flint. She said her name was Grace, so I thought it apt that I said mine was Haniel, which meant ‘grace’ in some old Simanthu dialect.

Portrait of Gertrude Russell (1915). Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951). Oil on canvas.

The portrait is exemplary in its freedom of expression and sympathetic portrayal. Gertrude, age 11, sits cross-legged with a book in her lap, gazing shyly at the viewer. Benson adeptly captures the texture of her frilly frock and the layering of the folds of fabric by interweaving broken, discernible brushstrokes of varied tones of cream and ivory. These expanses of finery are broken only by Gertrude’s pink sash and oversized hair bow. Benson echoes these hues, in the fabrics on the bench and in traces of the rug pattern, adding cohesion to the composition.
