A few weeks ago XXL Magazine announced their annual freshman class. This year’s recruits consist of ScHoolboy Q, Trinidad Jame$, Joey Bada$$ Ab-Soul, Logic, Action Bronson, Kirko Bangz, Travi$ Scott, Dizzy Wright, and Angel Haze.
This years class excites me, but it disappoints me even more. Artist such as Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, and Joey Bada$$ have deserved to be on this cover years ago. As most of us know ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul are a part of the infamous rap group TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment). Two of the four members, Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar, have already been admitted to the Freshman class in 2010 and 2011. All four of the members are talented and deserve all their praises, but what took so long to give Soul and Q the recognition they deserve when most of them started at the same time?
The same thing goes for Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$. Joey is a member of ProEra (Progressive Era) who are bringing back that boom-bap rap. I find it unfair that Joey is just now getting the attention he deserves and is just now getting admitted to the Freshman class. This not only applies to Joey, but the rest of ProEra as well. They deserve to be on this cover too and long before 2013. Another person who’s admission into this class is Kirko Bangz. Bangz has been rapping since I was in middle school (2005-2008). At this point overdue is an understatement and this is what makes me question rap and hip-hop.
What is also startling is that Trinidad Jame$ is on the cover as well. Personally I find his music ignorant and pointless. His music has no message and honestly he cannot rap. What also does not make sense is that he has only made one “popular” single and he is on the cover. I find this disrespectful to artist who have been working hard over the years to make it and actually have talent. What has happened to hip-hop?
