fresh water lakes

2

Karymsky Lake is a crater lake located in the Karymsky volcano in Russia. With a radius of 5 km it was once one of the world’s largest fresh water lakes, but as a result of a recent eruption toxic gases turned this into one of the largest acid water lakes.

The alchemist picked up a book that someone in the caravan had brought. Leafing through the pages, he found a story about Narcissus.

The alchemist knew the legend of Narcissus, a youth who knelt daily beside a lake to contemplate his own beauty. He was so fascinated by himself that, one morning, he fell into the lake and drowned. At the spot where he fell, a flower was born, which was called the narcissus.

But this was not how the author of the book ended the story.

He said that when Narcissus died, the goddesses of the forest appeared and found the lake, which had been fresh water, transformed into a lake of salty tears.

‘Why do you weep?’ the goddesses asked.

‘I weep for Narcissus,“ the lake replied.

‘Ah, it is no surprise that you weep for Narcissus,’ they said, 'for though we always pursued him in the forest, you alone could contemplate his beauty close at hand.’

'But… was Narcissus beautiful?’ the lake asked.

'Who better than you to know that?’ the goddesses asked in wonder. 'After all, it was by your banks that he knelt each day to contemplate himself!’

The lake was silent for some time. Finally, it said:

'I weep for Narcissus, but I never noticed that Narcissus was beautiful. I weep because, each time he knelt beside my banks, I could see, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected.’

'What a lovely story,’ the alchemist thought.

WDW TBT - River Country in Florida

February 5, 2015

Today’s Throw-Back-Thursday is for a now abandoned water park here in Central Florida.  River Country at Walt Disney World was a seasonal park located near the Fort Wilderness Lodge. This first water park at WDW opened on June 20, 1976 and ceased operations on November 2, 2001. Four years later, Disney announced it would stay closed permanently. With Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon now open (they both opened in the ‘80’s), one more water park, especially a very old and small one, just isn’t necessary. In the almost 15 years since Its closure, the park is decrepit and falling apart; an epitome of a ghost park.

(Above: River Country when open)

Surprisingly, while I was raised here in Central Florida and went to WDW a lot, often camping in Ft. Wilderness, I never went to River Country. The water park looked like it was designed as some kind of cross between Tom Sawyer and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad; “an old-fashioned swimming hole” was Its theme; right down to the tire swings and rope bridges. Of course, back when it was created, the Imagineers didn’t understand the possible repercussions of some of their design choices. Such as, damming Bay Lake and using untreated, though filtered, fresh water for the park. This resulted in a water-born disease (with a 95% fatality rate) that killed at least one child.

(Above: Goofy was the official River Country Mascot)

(Below: The same slide today)

The park continued struggling on, barely making a profit with the competition of the two, newer water parks. Then, citing declining tourism rates everywhere after 9/11, the decision was to close the park, with a possibility of reopening at some point. However, that idea was abandoned in 2005 when Disney announced it would not reopen. It may also have had to do with “a change in Florida laws, which prohibited unchlorinated natural water bodies from being used for water park attractions”. [Wikipedia] It would have taken major overhauling to accomplish this change, and it just wasn’t worth it.

(Above: Main swimming hole then, a fresh-water lake… Below: and today)

Want to hear something REALLY creepy? The park has been closed 14 years. Occasionally, people sneak in to the park, taking pictures or video. Let’s face it…who ISN’T intrigued by abandoned amusement parks? I’ve got a whole board on my Pinterest page dedicated to just that subject! ( www.pinterest.com/guinnesswench )More than one person reports that path lights, water fountains, and plumbing still work and the park’s banjo MUSIC IS STILL PLAYING. Here’s a video of two guys who snuck in at twilight. Eerie.

(listen for the music about 3 minutes into the clip)

I haven’t been able to find any reason why the park was simply abandoned instead of being demolished. Most of the park was left in place, even towel boxes, rafts, etc., as if it fully planned to reopen for business. You would think that demolishing it would be preferable both for a liability issue (you just know at some point, some idiot is going to sneak in and get killed) and an environmental one. I can tell you, it doesn’t take long for things that are left neglected in Florida to be reclaimed by swamp. I just can’t believe the deterioration doesn’t hurt the environment. And why not use the land to create something useful?

(Water slides and pool then and now)

At any rate, if you never made it to River Country, it has to go on the “Things you’ll never see again at Disney” list. Then head over to Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon for a bigger and better water park.

I still think about Lady Katrine and her “favorite husband” Lord Mogens from my comic Elftaken a lot. Their universe is very different from my usual folklore stuff because it’s inspired by the 1800’s romantic ideas about the underworld. I have several short stories about their adventures, I just have to pull myself together.

One of the recurring characters is Birk (birch) The White Troll who’s official title is Lady Katrine’s Steed, a title he’s very proud of and which earns him a lot of respect in the underworld. Katrine has more efficient ways of traveling, but it just looks so much cooler arriving on a big, white troll.

Another is Mr. Bui. He’s a vætte, which means an underworldly creature that doesn’t quite fit into any category and has no trouble entering human houses. He can appear anywhere there’s fresh water, like lakes, streams, wells, and even just a glass of water. He was originally Lady Katrine’s go to guy when she needed to get something from the human world, but now Mogens is much better suited for it, human as he is. Mr. Bui often accompanies him though.

xalice-clara  asked:

👪 for what my muse would say to your muse’s child about them. { i am a masochist }

“You want to know about your mum?” Remus asked, his pupils dilating to distant pinpricks as memories of her laughter and shared glasses of wine consumed his memory. She was no more, Alice. Sure, her body lived on and by all definitions, she was alive, but ALICE, the Alice Prewett he knew, was no more. Remus swallowed, his peridot gaze catching Neville’s that was so much of a mix of his mother’s and his father’s he was hard to look at.

“She was fresh lake water and the taste of lemonade- sweet, but tart. I never heard her complain once. She looked amazing in red, which she’d be proud of, and I don’t think I ever saw her with a hair out of place. Somehow, Alice was always professional even when she laughed with her mouth full of sweets. More than anything, she was a friend. You know, the kind you hold onto. The kind you’d easily kill for, without thought, because she’d do the same for you. Easy. Alice was special,” Remus said quietly, swallowing back a small lump in his throat. He met Neville’s wide-eyed gaze, her son so full of self-doubt and curiosity about the parents that were robbed from him. “And so are you.”

WITCHY FAQ

* Firstly I would just like to say that you should do your OWN research before coming to social networking sites to ask about the basics of Witchcraft.  I am happy to answer questions, but do get a little sick of answer basic questions when there is a whole Internet out there. There are so many websites and BOOKS on the subject, and they aren’t very hard to get a hold of! Here’s a post I made about my favourite books; http://the-aries-witch.tumblr.com/post/137661341214/the-aries-witch-a-list-of-my-favourite-witchy

Anwyays, here we go; A list of questions i frequently get

Q - Can anyone be a Witch?

A - Yes! Regardless of Religion, skin colour, identity, blood line, etc. Magick is inside us all, you can chose to work with it if you wish! All it takes is a little practise.

Q - When can I start calling myself a witch?

A - There isn’t a specific time frame, but I’m not going to pretend that it doesn’t annoy me when a person goes and buys a crystal or something with a pentacle on it and then proclaims themselves a witch. Personally, i think you will know when you are a witch, you will feel your magick awaken and you will know. Owning tools, crystals, books, whatever, doesn’t make you a witch. The feeling inside is what makes you a  witch, you will know it when you feel it.

Q - What advice do you have for a beginner witch or someone new to the craft?

A - Don’t be afraid to try things out! Don’t worry about doing things ‘by the book’ or ‘perfectly’ there is no such thing as doing a spell right or wrong. Do it how you feel you should

Q - How do I get a familiar?

A- You don’t just acquire a familiar.  Your familiar will come when the time is right, and the same as you cannot go pick up any animal (your pet or other) and claim it as your familiar, you cannot force you familiar to appear. Deep meditation and visualisation are some ways you can try to find your familiar, but often, trying too hard will only fail. Just wait and see what happens!

Q - What items would you recommend for basic witchcraft?

A - Although you don’t NEED these items, they’re a great way to start. I would recommend you start with an Athame, Wand, Pentacle, Chalice, A heat proof bowl, Candles, Basic multi-use herbs like lavender, sage, Frankincense and sandalwood, and also clear quartz and amethyst.

Q - Does your astrological sign have any connection with your magick?

A - If you believe it does, or if you want to incorporate your sign into your magick - Yes

Q- Why do my spells not work sometimes?

A - Spells don’t always work because sometimes they don’t need too! The universe knows what you need and sometime it isn’t what you ask for.

Q - Which deity should I worship?

A - You do not need to worship one specific deity, But doing research is a great way to find a deity you feel drawn to or most connected with.

Q - What is this circle you speak of and how do I cast one?

A - The sacred circle is a space for you to perform your magick in! I won’t go into the lengthy details on casting it, but basically you envision a bright white sphere of protective energy around yourself and this is the time in which you call in the 4 quarters, the god and goddess and other deities to aid you in your work. ( see my post on a full circle casting ritual here > http://the-aries-witch.tumblr.com/post/137616797936/the-aries-witch-the-aries-witch-a-simple

Q - Should I be in a Coven or a solitary witch

A - Whatever you feel most comfortable doing! You do not have to be in a coven to be a witch, and you do not have to be completely solitary either - you can always invite a witchy friend over and do little rituals and spells together!

Q - Do I need to charge crystals? How can i do so?

A - You can charge crystals by burying them in salt or clean earth or by immersing them in fresh water from a lake or the ocean. The easiest and most common method is leaving them out in the moonlight to absorb the energies, same can be done with the sunlight but as harsh sunlight will fade a lot of crystals, the early morning rays are best

Q - Which crystals/herb/incense should I get for ____

A - this answer would be much better answered if you did your own research so that you could find a whole list of herbs and their attributes and work out what will work best for you.

* I will probably add more to this over time.
