The sections as quotes from marching season

Director: “I will not hesitate to come down off of this tower and personally out march every single one of you”

Drum Major: “I can tell it’s a good performance when I almost fall off the podium”

Piccolo/Flute: “Put your phone away” *pulls out phone*

Clarinet: “Another one? That’s the third reed I’ve broken this week!”

Low reeds: “If you miss your set just give ‘em the old razzle dazzle”

Saxophone: “Get your feet on the beat or I’ll break your legs”

Mellophone: *2 hours into rehearsal* “I just realized that I left my mouth piece in my case”

Trumpet: “let’s take everything up an octave and see how long it takes the director to notice” *cracks every note*

Trombone: “Is this your first time playing trombone? You know more positions in bed than on your horn”

Baritone: “JUST DO IT”

Sousaphone: “I HAVE KNOTS IN MY SHOULDER THE SIZE OF AFRICA”

Drumline: “I don’t know why it’s so hard to get your feet on the beat when you’re playing QUARTER NOTES”

Pit/Front Ensemble: “You don’t even have to march WHY ARE YOU RUSHING?”

Color Guard: “No, sir. We can’t practice today it’s kinda windy.”

Russenorsk (eller “Moja på tvoja”) is an extinct dual-source pidgin language formerly used in the Arctic, which combined elements of Russian and Norwegian, and which was created by Russian traders and Norwegian fishermen from northern Norway and the Russian Kola peninsula. It was used extensively in Northern Norway for about 150 years in the Pomor trade. Russenorsk is important as a test case for theories concerning pidgin languages since it was used far away from most of the other documented pidgins of the world.

Russenorsk had a rudimentary grammar and a restricted vocabulary, mostly composed of words essential to Arctic fishing and trade and did not particularly deal with unrelated issues.

Corpora of Russenorsk consist of lists of individual words and phrases as well as records of dialogues compiled by linguists such as Just Knut Qvigstad. The corpora include c. 400 words, of which about half are hapax legomena.

The origin of its vocabulary is generally held to be approximately 40% Russian and 50% Norwegian, with the remaining 10% from Dutch, Low German, French, English, Sami, and Swedish.

Kak sprek? Moje niet forsto. - What are you talking about? I don’t understand.

Eta grot dyr. Værsegod, på minder prodaj! - It is very expensive. Please lower the price!

Kak pris? Mangeli kosta? - What is the price? How much?

Davai paa moia malenka tabaska presentom. - Give me some free cigarettes.

Moja tvoja på vater kasstom. - I will throw you into the water.

Dialog system! This is not quite feature-complete, but I’ll wait later for more specific use cases to add what’s missing. What I have so far:

  • Dynamic placement of the camera when entering a dialog
  • Scrolling text
  • Rich text (I know this is default in unity, but you have to tweak your scrolling text, otherwise it’ll break the markup tags)
  • Shader animations (you can put materials on the text component)
  • Static cameras
  • Contextual music trigger and sound effect trigger
  • NPC animation trigger
  • Questions with branching paths
  • Dialog progression + persistence
  • Localization

And with this, I think I’ve put off doing more character animations for long enough so I’ll need to get back into it. Next up: a combat system… hopefully.

The Sections as Quotes from my Director

Drum Major: “I bought a new baton and I feel so powerful”

Piccolo/Flute: “But there are more than 3 flats in the key, I can’t play this”

Oboe/Bassoon: “SHUT UP”

Clarinet: “Why are there so many broken reeds on my band hall floor?”

Saxophone: “Once in college I stayed up for like a week straight”

Low Reeds: “If you need to take a break from all these long tones, just drop out. No one will notice.”

Mellophones/French Horns: “I swear I’ve played more up beats than minutes you’ve been alive”

Trumpets: “This is the trio. It’s supposed to be quiet not peeling the paint off the walls! Calm down!”

Baritone: *stops conducting to answer phone* “Hello? No we don’t want any”

Trombone: “If I hear one more B flat thats not in the music the whole section is running a lap”

Sousaphone/Tuba: “There are 5 of you playing and I still can’t hear you over the bass clarinets. Man up.”

Pit/Front Ensemble: “I’m not waving my arms for nothing. Get your eyes up”

Drumline: “now if only you could play the show as well as you can play stand tunes”

Color Guard: “You’re the focal point. You’re waving around a flag for crying out loud. Do it good”
